Match Report

What a heck of a match. injured or ill players all over the place for Castaways and only two players available for Comets, but probably their (new) best two, so Greg ended up playing in two matches on the same night.

Terry first up against Kevin and despite sneaking the first leg he had no answer to Kevin in the next three, first blood to Comets.

Greg was busy on the other table Neil stepped up against Comets new boy, Zac. TBH not too much of a contest and Zac ran away with it, 2-0 Comets.

Greg then joined the match to play Johnny and Johnny made quite short work of him three straight, Castaways on the Board.

Johnny then played Kevin and unfortunately his missing disc left him not to move as well as he would normally resulting in an unusual three straight loss lose quite close.

Terry then played Zack and looked good taking the first two legs but then a simple change of service by Zack changed the game entirely and he ran away with it without much trouble to win in five. Castaways no0w 4-1 down and difficult to see where any wins are going to come from unless they can all beat Greg, win the doubles, and sneak one elsewhere, a big ask.

We then get a bit confused about the order, but the games were intense, Johnny went down three straight to Zack giving Zack a maximum on his first outing in the league.

Neil had an epic game with Kevin, losing the first, winning the second on deuce and the third to nine before Kevin came back to win the fourth on deuce and getting his nose in front to take the fifth to seven, close but no cigar.

Terry played Greg and despite and Greg put up a good fight, only losing the first on deuce and then winning the third on deuce Terry came back strong in the fourth to take it to three.

We then played the doubles out of order with the pairing on the injured Johnny and the ill Neil taking on Kevin (I’m not a good doubles player and a terrible scorer!) and Zack. This really could have gone either way and the Castaway’s unbeaten record was definitely in danger, especially after they lost the first leg. They came back in the second to win on deuce then lost the third to stare the loss in the face. Having fallen behind they fought back to win the fourth on deuce having saved two or three match points. This seemed to take the fight out of the two Comets players and Castaways ran out winners to two in the fifth.

Comets then offered to concede the final singles, but Neil insisted it didn’t feel right to take it (also he wanted to try to get a win – slight error of judgement there!). Greg has always been a bit of bogey player for Neil and so it turned out as even though Neil took the first, he was never comfortable and then lost the second to nine and then the third to deuce. A temporary respite then followed when Neil won the fourth to five but then it fell apart again with Greg hitting winners all over the place to win to five.

So, Castaways suffer their first loss of the season and to their potential rivals for runners up, it could be a massive result come the end of the season and losing three five leggers, only winning one, was probably the deciding factor.
