Match Report
What a cracking match played in great spirit. Nip and tuck all the way.
Simon set the scene with his first game winning against Mike in four despite Mike managing to take the third leg.
Old foes Neil and Duncan came to the table, and, in truth, Duncan deserved more than he got losing all three legs from wining positions.
Pete then played the third game and showed he still has it beating Lens in four though the last two were both on deuce.
Neil and Simon came to the table and having won the first leg Neil was well ahead in the second when Simon suddenly found the form, he’d been searching four. Having won the second there was no stopping him and he ran out a comfortable winner in the third and fourth.
Mike then completely befuddled Lens to put Castaways 3-2 up.
Pete then had the best of an epic match against Duncan, winning in five, 4-2.
Neil and Lens then fought out a leftie battle with Lens taking the first two legs fairly comfortably before Neil found the answer and took the third. The fourth should have gone to Lens but somehow Neil got back to deuce and stole the leg. The fifth went the same way though Lens made it tough at the end, only losing to a net point. 5-2 to Castaways.
Pete and Simon then came to the table with both unbeaten. Simon was full of confidence whereas Pete was perhaps still searching for his best form having been out for so long. Simon took the first in a close battle but then romped through the second. Pete responded with a comfortable third, but Simon then took back control to win in four.
Last up were Mike and Duncan, with Mike never having lost to Duncan so surely this was the game to take Castaways on to the win. Unfortunately for them it was not to be and although he won the second leg on deuce, he succumbed to a determined Duncan to bring the match score back to 5-4.
In an ironic twist the match had taken so long that Castaways had to concede the doubles meaning the match was a draw – ironic as in the reverse fixture Morpeth had to concede the doubles to Castaways.
