Match Report

John Clark reports - Gannet got off to a flier against their club mates Hector, winning the first three games; Tan Zhong Jiao did especially well to overcome the always-difficult Chris Morford in four sets, followed up by wins (also in four) for Liu Yun Guo against Ian Kelly, and Rob Hudd versus Sean Durkin. If Gannet thought that would be the start of a comfortable evening, this was miss-guided as Chris beat Liu and Ian Kelly played superbly to defeat Rob Hudd. Ian also played very well against Tan before finally succumbing in four sets in the match of the night, Ian nullifying Tan’s difficult long-to-the-backhand serves with some superb returning and attacking - great entertainment for everyone watching. The longest game of the night by some distance was the tie between Rob Hudd and Chris Morford, two players who often chop opponents into submission; they attempted to do this to each other for five gruelling sets, Chris finally coming out on top 11 - 6 in the decider. The Gannet pair of Tan and Liu almost threw away the doubles, letting an 8 - 2 lead slip in the fifth before staggering across the line to complete a 7 - 3 that sees Gannet extend their unbeaten run to six matches
