League Update 10th December
Northumberland County teams had mixed results in the second division of the County Championships with the first team finishing as runners up and the seconds in fifth place. The first team of Andrew Wilkinson, Dave Robson, Graeme Barella, Christine Burke and Lynsey Storey lost out to the eventual winners, Warwickshire II in their first match but then went on to have three successive victories against their second team, South Yorkshire and Derbyshire II before drawing their final match with Staffordshire. Wilkinson and Robson got eight sets each with Barella and Burke claiming seven. 

The seconds beat Derbyshire II 7 – 3 , were well beaten by South Yorks and Warwicks, and narrowly lost to Staffordshire when veteran lady Pauline Long took two sets.

The holders, YMCA North Tyneside A, went out of this season’s handicap cup in the second round when they were narrowly beaten 5 – 4 by Ouston A for whom Neil Rodgers was unbeaten as they came from 2 – 4 down to win the match. Cramlington Swifts triumphed 5 – 4 against Matfen B despite being unable to beat Richard Rayfield with six of the sets needing a deciding end. Two sets each by Rob Lawson and Jim Hunter took Newton B through at the expense of Springwell with Charlie Roberton getting one. Blair Carmichael was the star player for Cramlington Corinthians being unbeaten in a 5 – 4 success against Old England Crocks and

Cramlington Spartans were another side to record a 5 – 4 victory when they beat Mortimer with Adrian Barnes and Chris O’Connor both winning two but losing out to Dave Cutler who won all three of his singles for the losers. Other teams through to the third round are Byker A, Riding Mill, Old England FATTS, Matfen C  and Ouston B.
