League Update 17th December
Northumberland Veterans are top of the County Championships Veterans Division 2A after winning all four of their matches in the first half of the season. The side of Eddie Smith, Dave Robson, Geoff Salter and Karen Henry made the long journey to Harlow in Essex worthwhile by winning 8 –2 against both Norfolk and Essex seconds and running out 9 – 1 winners against Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire.
Graeme Barella and Chun Yin Yu did extremely well in the recent Nottingham Grand Prix. Yu won the band six event without losing an end in any of his matches and then the two of them reached the final of the Mens Doubles. They had an impressive victory in the semis, winning in five ends against the highly fancied Ryan Jenkins and Cherith Graham  to set up an encounter with Matt Ware and Tom Maynard who are ranked 11 and 12 in England. After losing the first end they levelled matters but the highly ranked pair took control to beat them 3 – 1.
Yu  plays for the North East Chinese Association but is playing in the division three for some reason and he had no difficulty in winning his three sets against Cramlington Corinthians to help his team to a 7 – 3 success.
Dave Robson won all of his singles for Byker in the Premier Division but his team lost for the first time this season when they visited NESLC Eagles for whom Jim Stamas, Dick Wilson and Rob Reed got two each and Stamas and Wilson also took the doubles.
Newton’s A team of Anthony Ainley, Graeme Bell and John Russell have opened up a big gap at the top of Division One and are heading for a swift return to the top flight after winning 9 – 1 against second placed North Fire B
