League update 16th March
Northumberland’s Veterans County team played the second and final round of matches at Draycott last weekend 5th/6thMarch and the team comprised Dave Robson, Jim Stamas, Paul Baines and Karen Henry. Currently playing in Division 1A and sitting mid table after the first round of matches. The best they could hope for was to maintain position as Northumberland No. 1 Veteran Eddie Smith was unavailable due to injury. The team did not disappoint as they started well by drawing with Cheshire on Saturday morning and being unlucky when leading 5-4 with only the mixed doubles to play could not clinch the win. This was followed up by a loss by 8 -2 to Warwickshire who included Ex Northumbria League player Mark Jackson in the afternoon. Sunday started well with a 6-4 victory over Staffordshire with Robson and Stamas both getting two each backed up by Baines with one and winning the men’s doubles. In the afternoon Yorkshire proved to be too strong and ran out 8-2 winners with Robson getting the 2 for Northumberland. The team finished mid table with the division being won by Warwickshire.
The Northumberland Cadets team of Adam Webster, Simon Knoff and Sreeraag Kanakala finished off their season in style by winning all 3 of their remaining matches on the 4thand final day of competition of the National Cadet League beating Ormesby II 8-1, Blitz 6-3 and finally Northfield 9-1 to finish runners up to Bishop Auckland.
In the League top team in the Premier division Cramlington Casuals were due to play Byker A who are currently 3rd, but the match was called off then conceded by Byker due to the illness in the camp. With only 3 rounds of matches left the 10 points gained by the Casuals almost certainly assures them of retaining the Premier Division crown.
