League report 13th June
Now in its 4th week Division 1 of the Northumbria summer league is looking as if it may be a 2 horse race for the title. St Chads and Mount A are already drawing away from the chasing pack. Chads having played one more than the mount having won 3 comfortably and lost one to the other possible threat Brandon 6-4 in their last match. Mount A have played 3 and won all 3 although didn’t have things all their own way when entertaining Brandon at home only just winning 6-4. They’ve just strengthened their team with the registration of Northumbria County Champion Graeme Barella and if they he plays each week they will take some stopping. Brandon could be in the hunt but only if they can field their best team each week. However as usual the summer league is unpredictable with teams fielding weakened teams some weeks due to holidays etc. At the other end of the table NECA and Old England are finding it tough and neither have recorded a win in the 4 matches they have played.
Division 2 is being led by Matfen Senators who have won all 4 of their opening matches with evergreen stalwarts Alex Holiday and Dave Swan in the team supported by Robert Neil Forsyth . Holiday only having lost one set out of 12 played to Mark O’Connor so far this season. Of other teams in this Division Backspin Legend A having recently secured a new sponsorship deal along with Prudhoe A could cause upset or two along the way. Tyneside A and Mitford are currently in the bottom two slots.
Last week saw a Ladies Northumbria representative team of Christine Burke and Shirley Gelder travel to Wellingborough to play in the Rose Bowl against other teams from around the Country. They finished a very creditable 5th.
