Northumbria Winter League - weekly league report 14 November 2021

In the Premier Division there was a straightforward 9-1 win for NECA over Old England Jacks which saw NECA move to the top of the table. Andrew Wilkinson and Lee Tinkler both won three games for NECA with Jamie Collins winning two games including a good win in 5 ends over Jake Helm. The Mount A team of Dan Dodds, Jamie Dent and Jimmy Scope proved too strong for Tyneside A with a 10-0 win. The match between Newcastle University and Prudhoe United Services A was a much closer contest than the 8-2 to Newcastle University suggests with many of the games going to five ends. In the end Newcastle University came out on top with Ho Hei Lam and Dari Dubenko both winning three games and Charlotte Weatherby two games; Prudhoe’s Mark O’Connor beat Charlotte Weatherby in a five end game and paired up with Andrew Firth to win the doubles. In the all Cramlington match the Casuals came out on top against the Stingers with a 6-4 win. James Bradbury was player of the match winning three games with Duncan Wraight winning two games and the pair combined to win the doubles. The Stingers points came from wins by Steve Pearce, Nigel Rodgers and Gareth Pearson over Lynsey Storey who was playing up for the Casuals, and a notable win for Nigel Rodgers over Duncan Wraight which was secured 14-12 in the fifth end.

Division 1 is shaping up to be a tightly contested division this year. Mount B consolidated top place in the league with a 7-3 win over NECA B. Lee Eadington was player of the match winning three games for Mount. NECA’s Kit Robinson had good wins over Dave Cutler and Dean Eadington both games went to five ends. The match between Stocksfield A and Ouston A was 5-4 to Stocksfield going into the final game. Stocksfield had taken the lead with Alex Holliday and Neil Forsyth winning two games each and wining the doubles; Ouston were still in the game with two wins for Bernie Morris and one win apiece for Jon Mawson and Tom Fowle. In the final game to decide the match Alex Holliday played Bernie Morris, Alex Holliday went into a 2-1 lead but was pegged back in the fourth end but then won the fifth end 13-11 to secure the win for his team. With Ouston suffering a defeat Cramlington Falcons took the opportunity to move into second place in the league with a 7-3 win over Prudhoe United Services B. Oliver Ho was player of the match with three wins supported by Anth Doyle with two and Alan Roskilly with one. Prudhoe’s Ryan Campbell won two games against Anth Doyle and Alan Roskilly in which he came from behind in both to won in the fifth end.

In Division 2 Brandon Bravehearts moved back to second place in the league with an 8-2 win over Stocksfield B. Both Jamie Westwater and Steve Pattinson won three games with David Brown winning one game. Nigel Tree and Stefan Sobell won the two games for Stocksfield. Cramlington Reivers had a comfortable 8-2 win over Ouston C with Bernie McArdle maintaining his unbeaten start to the season winning three games; Mike Dunn and Joe Swinburne both won two games each. Ouston’s Shirley Robson and Ian Cumpson both won one game each.

In Division 3 there was a straightforward 10-0 win for Stocksfield C over Cramlington Dragons which saw Stocksfield go the top of the table. The Stocksfield team of Richard Rayfield, David Crompton and Mark Perrin proved too strong for their opponents. Tyneside C had a comfortable 8-2 win over Cramlington Lions with Don Catley and Daniel Foster both winning three games. The Lions’ points came from wins by Patrick Easton and Freddie McKenna over Ian Armstrong. The all Cramlingtom match between Cramlington Dynamos and Cramlington Cobras ended in a 5-5 draw. The Dyanmos had gone into a 5-2 lead with two wins apiece for Daniel Gazerani-Lopez and Jonathan Javita-Calle as well as the doubles, but the Cobras came back strongly to win the next two games. In the final game Cobras Joe Hastings took a two end lead over Daniel Gazerani-Lopez but was then pegged back by the young player to take it to a fifth end which Joe Hastings won 11-8 to secure the draw for his team.
