Northumbria Table Tennis League Weekly Report – 10 October 2021
This week saw the return of the Northumbria table tennis winter league with fifteen fixtures across the four divisions.
In the Premier Division there was a close match between Cramlington Casuals and Mount A. Mount went into the final game with a 5-4 lead thanks to two wins each from Dan Dodds and Jamie Dent who also combined to win the doubles, but in the final game Gareth Pearson beat Dan Dodds to secure the 5-5 draw for the Casuals and a second win for him on the night; Iain Wood won two games and Duncan Wraight one game. The match between Old England Jacks and Cramlington Stingers ended in a 9-1 win for the Old England team who proved too strong for their opponents with three wins each for Steve Penman and Neil Herrington. The Cramlington Stingers win came from Nigel Rodgers who beat Jake Helm. St Chads proved too strong for Premier league newcomers Tyneside A with an 8-2 win. Keith Weatherby and Barry Cuthbertson both won their three games for St Chads with the Tyneside points coming from wins by Mark Kimberley and Steve Robinson over Tom Bainbridge. NECA A overcame Prudhoe United Service A by the same 8-2 score with Lee Tinkler and Adam Webster both too strong for the Prudhoe players. The Prudhoe points came from wins by Mark O’Connor and Andrew Firth over Ken Lee.
In Division 1 Ouston A beat Mount C 7-3, the Mount team had taken an early 3-1 lead but then Ouston won the next 6 games to take the match. The final score wasn’t reflective of the close nature of the game where most of the games went to 4 0r 5 ends. Bernie Morris was player of the match winning three games for Ouston. The match between Stocksfield A and Mount B was a close affair which ended in a 5-5 draw. Mount B had taken a 5-4 lead thanks to two wins each from Dean Eadington and Dave Cutler but then Alex Holliday beat Shirley Gelder in the final game to level the score and take the player of the match win three wins. The match between Prudhoe United Services B and NECA B also ended in a 5-5 draw. Terry Kwong was player of the match winning three games for NECA and was supported with wins from Ken Lee and Jamie Collins. Old England Nomads beat Cramlington Tigers 8-2 with both Joe Perrin and Alan Atkinson winning their three games for Old England; Cramlington’s wins came from Lynsey Storey and Ron Scott who both beat Colin Robson.
In Division 2 there was a forward 7-3 win for Cramlington Swifts over Ouston C; this result was adjusted after the game as Sam Nair who playing up for the Swifts and won his three games was ineligible to play up and the results of his games were awarded to Outson. There was a closer game between Mount D and Ouston B which ended in a 5-5 draw. The lead constantly changed between the two teams throughout the match before Michael Lyons won the final game for Ouston to secure the draw for his team and player of the match with three wins. The game between Cramlington Reivers and Brandon Bravehearts ended in a 7-3 win for the Brandon team but player of the match went to Reivers’ Bernie McArdle who won his three games. The Brandon players Ian Richardson, Jamie Westwater and Steve Pattinson all won two games each.
In Division 3 an experienced Saints team proved too strong for Cramlington Lions with a 9-1 win. Steve Dawson and John Cook both won three games, and the only win for the Lions came from a John McKenna win over Ken Greatbatch who won in 5 ends after being 2 nil down. Tyneside C beat Cramlington Dynamos by the same 9-1 score, Dan Foster and Don Catley both winning three games and the Dynamos win came when Daniel Gazerani-Lopez beat Ian Armstrong. There was an all Cramlington affair between the Magpies and the Cobras which the Cobras came out on top with a 7-3 win. Joe Hastings was player of the match for the Cobras with three wins and was backed up with two wins from Alan Hedley and one win for new player Dorian Cheung; the Magpies points came from Joel Dyer and Sara Haddi.
