This week it was the first round proper of the annual Handicap Cup competition, being played to a reduced forty points per game for the first time. The game of week witnessed Rhyl B beating Amlwch C 592-591. In these circumstances it is difficult to highlight the key moment in the match, but in the final match Amlwch C were leading by one point. In what must have been a tense doubles encounter Dave Foster and John Hughes beat Matthew Winnett and Mark Hadcock 40-38 to book Rhyl B a semi-final place. Another fantastic match involved second division Craig-y-don B having a twenty-six point start against first division Conwy A. Craig-y-don B looked clear favourites when Bob Hughes beat Conwy captain and number one ranked player Steve Nicholls 40-24. However, his team mates rallied, Graham Heath beat Keith Potter to 31 and Conwy’s “number three” Rob Walker beat Ady Waugh to 16 points to spare Steve’s blushes and win the match by 12 points. Other individual match winning highlights from this round of sixteen included Mark Pugh and Tony Wan who represent Police A winning the doubles 40-12 against Andy Horton and Rob Stanway. Also, Chris Phillips(Trinity B) restricted Rhyl C’s Gill Godfrey to a mere two points. Further, Matthew Fox (Trinity A) beat Roy Williams (Trinity C) 40-10. Finally, two fine wins by Denbigh B’s Don Grigg at the expense of Rhyl A’s Ged Haresnape and Alan Simkiss did not win the match, because sadly Denbigh B could only field two players.
