38 players, 6 events, 121 matches and 52 bacon rolls = another successful Stirlingshire Closed Championships!
Brian took the David Charleston Men’s Singles title, defeating teammate Marc 3-1 in a good quality final. Brian’s road to the title wasn't without a scare though - the unseeded Neil pulled off a few surprises throughout the day, eliminating 3rd seed Jamie in the group stages and then pushing Brian to a decider in the quarter finals. Both semi-finals saw 1st Division players in action for the first time in a few years, David S and Asa losing out 3-1 to Marc and Brian respectively.
The Open Doubles saw some interesting early matches with a large field but in the end the final came down to the top of the tops seeds. Brian and Marc seeing off Bob and Danny (yes, you read that right) 3-0 to take the title.
The younger events were also very closely contested. In the Cadet Singles top seed Blair took the title but not without a few tough battles. He was pushed to 5 sets in the semi finals by Lewis and then defeated 4th seed James (who’d had a good few wins over higher seeds throughout the day) by 3-0 in the final.
In the youngest age group James took the title without too much trouble, winning 4/4 in the round robin group. Ross took the runners up spot after a countback with Tyler.
In the Charles Gillespie Junior Singles, the final came down to the top 2 seeds with Asa upsetting the odds and defeating Jamie 3-2 to take home the title.
And last but not least, Rachel took the Ladies Singles title for the 3rd time with a 3-1 win over Claire in the final.
Big thanks to everyone who attended today and helped in any way. Massive thanks to Peter for assisting with the presentation; Cat, Morag and Fiona for the canteen and raffle (we raised a whopping £152!!) and everyone who umpired (in particular Lee – Umpire of the Day!) and helped set/clear up the hall.
Anyway, here's to the 2017/18 season. Hopefully it's a good one!
