Always a pleasure to visit The Square and as usual the games were very competitive as was the language! Brian set off as if he had to be away early as he fairly blitzed Mark in the first two sets but the he got careless, going for drives when the shot wasn't on. Mark also came to terms with Brian's tricky serve and with some great retrieving took the next two sets. Brian calmed down and cut out the unforced errors and let Mark make the mistakes and eventually took the fifdth set and the game. I went on against Thomas and my strange season continued. Lost the first set too easily but settled down and only just lost the second but I cruised the third as everything I tried seemed to work but it all disappeared in the fourth, nuff said. Ian made short work of James as did Brian against Tom and Ian against Mark. My indifferent form continued against James, we had a decent enough game but I went down in three. Game of the night was Ian against Tom. Tom took a close first set but Ian stormed back to take the second. Back came Tom in the third as Ian completely lost his touch but he recovered to take the fourth and it was impossible to predict who would emerge as the winner. Tom defended stoutly in the fifth and landed a couple of excellent backhand smashes but Ian had worked him out and moving his opponent around the table until he was able to land some telling forehand drives that even Tom couldn't retrieve. Added to a couple of net chord points meant Ian took the fifth and the game. James had no answer to Brian, especially his serving and he went down in three which brought me to the table once more and for once I was calmness personified. Instead of being all wound up at losing my previous two games I felt no nerves at all, must have been something in that Lucozade! I just kept the ball on the table, concentrated on a couple of serves that Mark didn't seem comfortable with and let him make the mistakes. I put a few good forehand smashes away and took the game three sets to nil. Ian and I won the doubles in four which added a little spice to the night. As always with the St Sq lads they were good company and the tennis was excellent. L
