The last week of the first half of the season saw Brand Identity Btake apart the youngsters of Ashingdon. POM Barrie Delf, David Jacob and Mick Grout all recorded hat tricks in their 9 – 0 away win. You have to admire the grit and determination of these Ashingdon players. We all wish them well for the second half.
Hockley C gave visitors Hadleigh Forum B a good run for their money. The away side motored to a 4 – 1 lead, before Hockley brought it back to 4 – 4. Unfortunately, their impetus ran out in the final deciding rubber with Forum’s Tony Jacks beating Paul Henlen in three straight sets to give the visitors a 5 – 4 win. The computer chose Brian Bissenden’s two successes as worthy of the POM award. However, it could just have easily been Forum’s Dave Woolmer, or Mick Tappenden, or Hockley’s Joerg Poeschus, all of whom also recorded two wins.
Canvey A, having managed to find three players this week, also pushed their visitors Mapledene hard. However, they too just fell short, losing by a similar 5 – 4 score. Mapledene’s POM Mike Johnston was undefeated and teammate Lin Roff added two wins. Andy Murray did well for Canvey with two victories, whilst Ray Wilson and Peter Cray got one each.
Lentern B were far too strong when entertaining the youngsters from Rawreth D. They ran out 8 – 1 winners thanks to maximums from POM Sanjay Saptarshi and Ian Cranstone. Paul Sims added two more and Harrison Creek got the visitors’ consolation.
Following on from last week’s 2-win success for veteran Tony Mace playing up from Division 2 for Hadleigh Forum C against Mapledene, this week Hadleigh Forum C called upon another Division 2 player, David Thomas, for their match at home to Rawreth C. Not to be outdone by Tony, David also won two rubbers. His teammates Graham Farmer and Satwant Gill also recorded two victories in a 6 – 3 home win. This was rather hard on Rawreth’s Puygrenier (Caroline) Cole who was undefeated and took the POM award.
The match between Hockley B and Ashingdon was postponed.

The first half of the Southend Winter League drew to a close this week and, not surprisingly, it was the vastly experienced RESSCside that has finished on top. They completed the final fixture with a 9-0 whitewash of Hockley E, Ron Coutts, Mike Worship and Richard Gill taking the honours. Bob Skews and Kevin Smart made up the rest of the squad which should surely be playing at a higher level.
Runnymede sit second after a 7-2 win against Canvey C. Dmitry Kisil and Andrew Humphries both recorded hat tricks with Ann Adlington adding the extra point. Lewis Pattle and Kevin Walsingham got a point each for the Islanders.
Third and fourth placed Wakering and Canvey B fought out a tight 5-4 match Wakering just edging it on the night. Father and son Paul and Zac England both won two games each with Pete Sarfras adding the fifth. For Canvey Tony Westwell and Terry Giddens also won two games each but there was no joy for Jo Hills.
Stanford B were in fine form against a two man Invicta B side running out 8-1 winners. Saad Abdullah and Chris Crooks won both their games and with John Handscombe they led 8-0 before the final game of the evening. It gave Invicta their consolation point as Keith Baxter fought back from 2-1 down against John to clinch a five set thriller 11/7 in the final set.
It turned out to be ladies night at Invicta as their C teamovercame Stanford C 6-3. Trisha Winter took the POTM award with her hat trick and she was backed up by two wins from John Golding and one from Jonathan Gould. Steve King chalked up two good wins for Stanford and Peter Moxham added the third.
