Stratford Herald Week Beginning January 15th
Alan Cotton produced an unbeaten match winning performance as Snitterfield defeated Colebridge Pasties 8-2. He was well supported by Clive Irwin and John Price despite both being denied perfect evenings by Tom Shortley. However Shortley's successes were all the Pasties were able to muster, although he and Mike Evetts looked likely to secure a third victory after taking a two set lead in the doubles, only for Cotton and Irwin to turn the contest around and clinch it in the decider. The outcome of the match may well have determined the eventual destination of the title, and witnessed the end of Pasties’ tenure as joint champions.
Perfect displays from Tim Fell and Gareth Hepworth provided the backbone to Shottery B’s 7-3 win over Henley A. Tony Remes was unlucky not to add to their tally after losing out in the fifth set to both Tony Seymour and Geoff Shephard, although he did have the consolation of sharing doubles success with Hepworth.
Steve Cull recorded a treble and Stef Mytton a brace for JLM Falcons when they entertained Tanworth Taipans. Darius Mrowninski marked his debut for the visitors with two wins, while Tim Lawrence and Denis Kynaston also got on the card. The match result was determined by the closing doubles where Mrowinski and Lawrence took a two set lead, only for their opponents to force a decider where the Taipans pair fought back to ensure honours were even.
In contrast it was a much more one-sided affair between Henley B and Veterans. Stuart Latham-Marr, Andy Rowland and Dave Milton were all untroubled for the villagers but, in the only contest to go the full distance, George Mudie was unfortunate to lose out to Milton after earning two more points than his opponent over the course of their encounter.
Veterans demonstrated the depth of their squad by playing a second fixture in the week with a completely different line-up. They entertained Blazing Paddles for whom, after a previous appearance in the doubles, Nello Mauri made a welcome full return. The Paddles' captain was back to his best with a treble, while Chris Dickens was also unbeaten and Wilf Chan added a brace. However Chan was unable to overcome Pete Rodwell who thereby ensured the hosts avoided the whitewash.
