Stratford and District Table Tennis Association
Henley A 7 – 3 Shottery B
West Warwicks 7 – 3 Royal Mail
Shottery C 7 – 3 Veterans
Shottery A 10 – 0 FISSC
When Henley A went 3-0 up against Shottery B they refrained from being too optimistic as, in the corresponding fixture last season, they enjoyed a similar lead before eventually losing 3 – 7. This time, however, they built upon their early advantage to reverse the previous scoreline. Mike Evetts notched a treble, with Geoff Shephard earning a brace despite being taken to the wire by Dave Milton. In the only other set to go to a decider the two Henley players combined to achieve success in the doubles, while Peter Quince added the team’s seventh victory. Tim Fell gained two wins for Shottery with Milton also getting on the card.
West Warwicks’ captain Alison Stewart led by example as her team defeated Royal Mail by recording a treble without the loss of a game. Robert McCluskey was prevented from attaining a similar result by Malcolm Heritage who returned to form in some style. With Dave Fordham and Wilf Chan both overcoming Peter Rodwell all three Postmen ended with one win.
It also finished 7-3 when Shottery C entertained Veterans. Rob Poole and Ken Southwell both went home unbeaten, although Southwell had to contest a fifth game against Brian Marston. David Lincoln-Lewis also went the distance with George Mudie before finally losing out 10-12.
Meanwhile, on the adjacent table, it was a more one-sided affair when Shottery A took on FISSC. The fixture began with the doubles where the Farmers started brightly by winning the opening game, after which their evening went downhill as they lost not only that set but also the remaining nine! Despite Graham Poole having to borrow a bat, after misplacing his own, this proved to be no handicap as he, Gary Stewart and Stephen Foster were all untroubled.
