The latest round of fixtures was decimated by the bad weather with the clash between title contenders Shottery A and JLM Falcons being among those postponed.
Despite resting regulars John Price and Alan Cotton, Snitterfield were able to capitalise upon their closest rivals’ enforced break by boosting their own chances of title honours with a 10-0 victory over Henley A. Clive Irwin, Alison Stewart and Don McAdam all recorded unbeaten performances, with the latter’s victory over Peter Quince the only game to go beyond three sets. After winning the opener McAdam lost the next two, before turning the tide and narrowly taking the honours 12-10 in the decider.
Shottery B also inflicted the whitewash when they travelled to Ashorne. Tim Fell, Tony Remes and Gareth Hepworth were untroubled, with the single end won by the hosts’ captain Steve Bolton providing their only consolation.
FISSC raced to a 5-1 lead in the battle of the tenants of Knights Lane, but it was their opponents Veterans who gained greater strength from the half-time refreshments as they won three of the final four games, although it wasn’t quite enough to gain a share of the spoils. Mark Jones led the way for the farmers with a treble, while Malcolm Smith added a brace and Richard Bennett their crucial sixth point. However the team’s margin of victory could have been greater had they been able to press home their advantage in the two contests to go right down to the wire. Bennett took an early lead against Peter Rodwell before eventually being defeated 12-10 in a keenly contested decider. In the doubles, alas, Smith and Jones lost out to David Wye and David Higgins despite earning four points more than the victors over the course of their five set encounter.

The Stratford Table Tennis League continues to swell, with 15 registered teams competing in the Winter 19/20 season. Sadly, Covid19 has forced the cancellation of the 3 a side league competition this year. On a positive note , Stratford upon Avon Tennis Club has created a socially distanced 2 a side league , which begins this week ( October 19th 2020 ). Hopefully , this encouraging development will be the foreshadow of a return to a full league programme, once it becomes safe to do so.
Stratford upon Avon Table Tennis Club open sessions at the towns centrally located leisure centre are proving to be enormously popular , there is every reason to believe that there is huge potential for further growth of this most accessible of sports.
