Henley B inflicted a shock 9-1 victory upon their own A team. Rob McCluskey and Stuart Latham-Marr notched trebles, although the latter was involved in both sets to go the distance. However he finally emerged triumphant against Don McAdam and Geoff Shephard, but Shephard subsequently attained some reward by overcoming Dave Milton to ensure the whitewash was avoided.
Shottery A cemented their position at the top of the league with a 10-0 win over West Warwicks. Alison Stewart came the nearest to gaining some consolation but eventually lost out to Stephen Foster in the only clash to go to the wire. Otherwise it was relatively plain sailing as Gary Stewart and Graham Poole were untroubled.
FISSC were unlucky to go out of the cup competition on the ‘away goals’ rule. After openplay the Farmers’ team of Malcolm Smith, Mark Jones and Peter Florence were 42 points ahead of the Ashorne trio of Steve Bolton, Roger Pye and Chris Bowles. However the handicap adjustment meant the final scores were level and so the visiting team went through.
Henley Pasties made a successful cup debut by defeating fellow newcomers Tanworth Taipans. The Pasties, represented by Georgina Credland, Jason Rainey and Mike Evetts, amassed 101 points more than their opponents which was reduced to a winning margin of just ten.
Blazing Paddles lost only a single game in accumulating a convincing lead of 146 over Veterans, despite the best efforts of their opponents’ captain Brian Marston. After application of the handicaps this was still a healthy difference of 67, and so more than enough to ensure Nello Mauri, Wilf Chan and Dave Fordham are just two matches away from retaining the trophy.
The three successful teams will be joined in the semi-final draw by the winners of the outstanding tie between Henley B and Shottery B.
