An unbeaten display from Mike Evetts provided the backbone to Henley Pasties 8-2 win over Shottery C. However he had to pull out all the stops against Kevin Taylor and Rob Poole before overcoming them in the only two sets to be settled in the fifth game. Jason Rainey and Mike Credland each added two successes, but neither was able to get the better of Poole who thereby acquired both the visitors’ points.
In the clash of the Knights Lane tenants Veterans made the early running against FISSC. George Mudie put aside an initial deficit to defeat Malcolm Smith over the distance, before Brian Marston beat Peter Florence in a similar manner after claiming the decider 12-10. With John Hunt also getting on the card their team took a 3-1 lead and looked odds-on to triumph over their old rivals. However the farmers won five of the last six sets to grab an unlikely 6-4 victory. In keenly contested encounters Florence and Mark Jones recorded braces by overcoming Mudie and Hunt, while Malcolm Smith took the honours in his contest with the in-form Marston as well successfully partnering Jones in the crucial doubles which also went to the wire.
Roger Pye notched a treble for Ashorne, although it wasn’t enough to prevent his team going down 6-4 to Tanworth Taipans. Pye was made to work hard for his wins before finally defeating both Mick Welsh and Denis Kynaston over five games. Chris Bowles provided Ashorne’s fourth win, but narrowly lost out to Mike Saunders in another contest to go the full distance. Welsh and Saunders both claimed braces for the visitors with Kynaston adding their other singles together with the doubles with Welsh.
Ashorne were on the receiving end of a 10-0 defeat by Henley B. Stuart Latham-Marr, Dave Milton and Robert McCluskey all emerged with their records intact with each just dropping a single game during the match.

The Stratford Table Tennis League continues to swell, with 15 registered teams competing in the Winter 19/20 season. Sadly, Covid19 has forced the cancellation of the 3 a side league competition this year. On a positive note , Stratford upon Avon Tennis Club has created a socially distanced 2 a side league , which begins this week ( October 19th 2020 ). Hopefully , this encouraging development will be the foreshadow of a return to a full league programme, once it becomes safe to do so.
Stratford upon Avon Table Tennis Club open sessions at the towns centrally located leisure centre are proving to be enormously popular , there is every reason to believe that there is huge potential for further growth of this most accessible of sports.
