Henley Pasties accrued seven priceless points when they entertained Henley B. The Pasties phenomenal debut season continued with another convincing win , albeit not perfect as Mike Evetts was beaten by Robert McCluskey over four games, while Jason Rainey was unable to build upon victory in the opener against Stuart Latham-Marr. The two successful visiting players combined to clinch the doubles, while McCluskey was on course to add to his tally after taking a two game lead over Mike Credland only to lose out in the only contest to go to a decider. Credland went home with a treble for Pasties, with Evetts and Rainey earning braces.
With Pasties unable to field an unwell Mike Credland in their rearranged game with Tanworth Taipans on March 20th , super substitute Tom Shortley was called into the fray, and responded with a typically formidable Player Of The Match performance , which contributed significantly to Pasties flawless 10-0 win. It was not without its white knucklemoments ; Mike Evetts narrowly beat Worcestershire cadet Ben Rycroft Stanley , and Jason Rainey was taken to three deuce games before crossing the winning line 11-4 in the fourth against the same player.
Meanwhile their championship rivals Shottery A delivered a perfect performance against FISSC. Stephen Foster, Graham Poole and Gary Stewart were all untroubled despite the latter twice being taken to deuce by the farmers’ in-form player Mark Jones.
Evetts also featured in West Warwicks’ visit to Veterans, and fully justified his selection with three wins without reply. He also successfully partnered Peter Rodwell in the crucial doubles which they completed with a marathon 22-20 fourth game victory. Rodwell and Alison Stewart each added a win which was just enough to see West Warwicks gain the narrowest of victories. George Mudie was the hosts’ top performer after coming through the only two contests to go the full distance. He put aside a two game deficit to defeat Stewart before taking the honours 12-10 in the fifth against Rodwell. Brian Marston and John Hunt both got on the card for Veterans but it wasn’t enough to prevent their team losing 6-4.
Henley A won the first seven singles contests to gain an unassailable lead when they travelled to Tanworth Taipans. However their opponents fought back to take the remaining two to give themselves some credibility but, with the concluding doubles also going the way of the visitors, they finished on the receiving end of an 8-2 scoreline. Don McAdam led the way for Henley A with a perfect performance, while Peter Quince and Geoff Shephard each notched two sets. Shephard overcame early deficits against Tim Lawrence and Mike Saunders to earn wins over five games but, despite taking an initial lead, he lost out to Denis Kynaston. Lawrence added Taipans other score by getting the better of Quince in the only other contest to go to the wire.

The Stratford Table Tennis League continues to swell, with 15 registered teams competing in the Winter 19/20 season. Sadly, Covid19 has forced the cancellation of the 3 a side league competition this year. On a positive note , Stratford upon Avon Tennis Club has created a socially distanced 2 a side league , which begins this week ( October 19th 2020 ). Hopefully , this encouraging development will be the foreshadow of a return to a full league programme, once it becomes safe to do so.
Stratford upon Avon Table Tennis Club open sessions at the towns centrally located leisure centre are proving to be enormously popular , there is every reason to believe that there is huge potential for further growth of this most accessible of sports.
