Stratford Herald Week Beginning February 19th
The resurgent JLM Falcons maintained their late bid for league honours with a 9-1 win over last season’s joint title holders Colebridge Pasties who were represented by the ‘Three Mikes’ – Evetts, Klein and Credland. Luke Moffat and Steve Cull recorded trebles for Falcons, with Doug Payne adding a brace after being involved in both singles contests to go down to the wire. He narrowly overcame Evetts but, in the penultimate game of the evening, let slip a two set lead against Credland which provided Pasties with their only consolation. Joe Cull entered the action for the concluding doubles where he successfully partnered Falcons’ captain Moffat in the third clash to go the full distance.
If Falcons are to finish the season in style they will need to record significant victories in their forthcoming matches against the early front-runners Snitterfield and Shottery A who both boosted their own chances of honours by registering maximums.
John Price and Alan Cotton posted perfect performances for Snitterfield against Veterans, whilst the single end Don McAdam conceded to Brian Marston was all that their opponents were able to muster.
Shottery A were almost as convincing as Rob Poole and Graham Stewart earned trebles without reply at Henley A. Graham Poole was also unbeaten despite being made to work hard by Peter Quince who was unlucky to lose the fixture’s only five set encounter.
Chris Dickens and Wilf Chan were undefeated for Blazing Paddles when they entertained Ashorne. Dave Fordham added their other singles success but narrowly lost out to Jim Jack and Steve Handsley, although Fordham subsequently gained some consolation by securing the doubles with Dickens as Paddles ran out 8-2 winners.
Ben Rycroft-Stanley marked a rare appearance for Tanworth Taipans with an unbeaten display which enabled them to defeat Shottery B for the first time. Stuart Wilson overcame Tony Remes in the only contest to go to a decider with Denis Kynaston earning their crucial sixth point. Ron Shakesheff and Tim Fell notched braces for the hosts, but it wasn’t enough to prevent their team finishing on the wrong end of a 6-4 scoreline.
Taipans also enjoyed victory in the knockout cup against Ashorne. Wilson and Kynaston were joined by Mike Saunders and the trio were 27 points ahead of their opponents at the conclusion of play. The handicap adjustment was 19 points thereby ensuring a margin of victory of just eight. They will take on Colebridge Pasties to decide which team will meet JLM Falcons who have already secured their place in the final.
