North Confined 2018-19 Full Results

The North Confined Championships took place on Sunday 27 January, and it was an excellent event with a very large entry, showcasing all the Table Tennis talent currently in Aberdeen and surrounding areas.

This year's North Confined Championships comprised of three separate events: Rubber Shop Singles, Aberdeen University Open and Watt Cup. From all entries received, players were split up between tournaments based on their performance to date. All indicates that this format worked very well, boosting entry level and giving players more fulfilling table tennis experience. Time-wise North Confined was also spot on and we'd like to thank Alison Woods, Charlie Flint and all involved for running the event smoothly from early morning till the very end.

Ross Martin confidently won Rubber Shop Singles. He dropped only one game at the group stage and on the way to the victory dispatched Elias Bokedal and Rafal Wilowski. Rafal, a runner-up of the event, went through an unbelievably close match in semis, beating Andrew McRae 10, -9, -9, 9, 5.

Tessa Yau entered the tournament in a very last moment and now she can celebrate her AU Open 2018-19 title. She won her group although in a match against Neil Paterson she found herself 2 games down. Years of training finally kicked in and she comfortably won the next three games. Troubles came back again in semi-final where Derek Reid was not willing to give up easily. Tessa only managed to stop Derek in the 5th by a narrow 12:10 win. In the final Tessa defeated our guest player from Dundee David Hay in three straight games.

2018-19 Watt Cup winner title went to AU Ospreys' player Mark Mitra. Mark won his group comfortably, dropping only one game in the process. On the way to the trophy he defeated Juris Zarins (QF, 6, -7, 8, 4), Jacob Munro (SF, 8, -6, 11, -9, 10) and Table Tennis Academy young talent Harry Blackhall (Final, 7, 9, 5).

In the junior events ASV Academy players dominated, with Nathan Pan taking the Primary school competition, but was pushed all the way in the final by Stonehaven player (and Academy prospect) Allan He. Nathan taking the match 11-9 in the 5th and deciding end. The U13 final saw Harry Blackhall take on Daniel Tibbetts. Both know each other well and competitive matches between them are usual epic affairs. This was no different with Harry racing into a 2-0 lead, only to be pegged back by Daniel to 2-2. The deciding end didn't disappoint and it was Daniel taking the spoils on this occasion with an 11-8 final end win.

The U15 event saw TT Academy players Louis Loi & Jacob Munro face off. Jacob found himself 2-0 up after 2 very close ends. Then Louis rallied, taking the next end in another tight affair, before an 11-7 & 11-8 winning display saw Louis take the title.

Academy players and Grammar team-mates Rafal Wilowski & Josef Bokedal were the clear top players in the U18 event. Rafal made up for his earlier Rubber Shop Trophy loss taking the U18 title, but not before Josef pushed him hard, with Rafal taking the match 3-1 and a fourth end win at only 14-12.

In the veterans Over 40 event, it was Triangle stalwart Mitch Reid making it through to face Gregor Ksiazek of CTM. After a comfortable first end and a deuce second end it was Gregor 2-0 up. Mitch then rallied taking the next 11-9, before Gregor stepped up again and took the title in the fourth end.

The Over 60 event saw former 2-time winner Brian Robertson (Triangle) take on old nemesis Dick Ferro (Grammar) in the final. A shock looked on the cards early on when Dick took the first end. However some clever play and excellent cross table topspins saw Brian take the next three games in a row and take the Over 60 title for the third year in a row.

Finally the Open Doubles event saw Kevin Anderson & Dennis Oon (CTM) take on Mitch Reid & Uwe Petermann (Triangle), both pairs had dispatched the ASV 'young guns' in the semi-finals, and were both up for the final match. A resurgent Kevin and the combination play of Dennis proved decisive in the final, running out 3-1 winners and taking the final title of the day.
