New Table Tennis Club at Kendal Leisure Centre
A new table tennis club, the Kendal Table Tennis Club, will open at the Kendal Leisure Centre on Tuesday, May 2nd 2017. Kendal Table Tennis Club will be run by the Kendal & District Table Tennis League, in partnership with Kendal Leisure Centre. The club will run from 7-9 each Tuesday evening in Studio 1 and it is hoped that there will be sufficient demand to run this all year round. Membership will, at least initially, be for a 3 month period and seniors only. Once the club is established, the possibility of involving juniors and introducing coaching will be considered. The idea is to get a club running for people in Kendal who want to play table tennis, either socially or competitively.
The initial quarterly membership fee will be £26. The first quarter will be May to July 2017. Membership will be limited to make sure that everyone gets sensible access to the tables on club night. It will be first come first served and the initial membership limit will be 8 players. A waiting list will then operate. 2 more tables will shortly be moving to the Leisure Centre, after which the limit will increase to 16. If demand rises above this, space options within the Leisure Centre will be considered. Meanwhile, the winter season in the Kendal League reached its climax with the final of the Knock Out Cup and the end of season trophy presentations taking place in Burton Memorial Hall on Wednesday, April 19th. The KO Cup final was an excellent and highly entertaining contest between Natland D and Burton C. Natland finally ran out 5-4 winners but only after staving off a last ditch comeback from the Burton team, who recovered from 4-1 down to 4-4 before falling at the final hurdle. Burton trailed by 4 matches to 2, when Jack Wheelhouse came back from 2 games down to beat Rin Colombi 6-11, 5-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-10 and the unfortunate Simon Gregory completed a hat-trick of wins only to end up on the losing side when James Burton was defeated 11-7, 9-11, 5-11, 7-11 by the improving Peter Leahy to hand the trophy to Natland.
The champions of each division were then presented with the winners trophies – Dalton Cricket Club A (Division 1), Dallam A (Division 2) and Dent (Division 3). The SLDC trophy for Volunteer of the Year went to Mick Taylor of Natland Table Tennis Club for his sterling efforts as General Secretary of the League.
