September 17 2018:
Portishead Sharks won the Bristol and District Table Tennis Summer League Trophy, beating two tough St George’s sides in the finals day showdown at Almondsbury on Saturday.
A total of 48 adult teams from all over Bristol entered the handicap competition at the start of the summer.
The Sharks, led by Derek Connop and featuring Tony Carnevale, Ronan Elder, Jake Tucker and David Boozari, won all nine of their games, clinching the final match with a thumping 11-0 victory.
The win was all the more remarkable as it was the three youngest Sharks – Ronan, Jake and David – who stormed to victory. With skipper Derek Connop away, they were mentored on finals day by Joe Ratajczak, the reigning Bristol and District League individual champion.
Connop said: “What can I say about David, Ronan and Jake. Tony and I did our bit to get the Sharks to the quarterr finals but these three guys have just been awesome since then. I am disappointed I wasn’t there to see them finish the job off but they were in the best hands possible with Joe guiding them.
“They have done themselves and the club proud. It’s a great day for the Sharks and a great day for Portishead Table Tennis Club.”
