WL 14-15 WEEK 12 REPORT

Week 12 REPORT

Week Commencing 8th December 2014

Premier Division - DRS Duncan Taylor        duncan.taylor@essexcc.gov.uk

First up a late result from last week which saw table topping Rawreth A beat Thorpe Bay B 7-2. Richard Stubbington was the player of the match winning two and just missing out on a hat trick against Kevin Read losing out in that one in 5 sets. There were a couple of really close games, both going to 5 sets, in what looks at face value like a very comfortable 9-0 victory for Thorpe Bay A v Warehouse A with Kim Shead and Berti Makoli pushing John Monk and Paul Whatton all the way respectively. It was a good week all round for Thorpe Bay as their B side also won 9-0 this time against Hullbridge C.  Another Premier division win for young Sam Hume this time over Dave Calleja along with 5 wins from the very reliable and vastly more experience duo of Gibbs and Caldon saw Hullbridge-Runnymede beat Rawreth B 6-3. Two wins for Keith Adams for the away side.  There was a close battle when Hullbridge B with their returning captain Nigel Lamb edged out Castle Point 5-4. No player won all three but there were two wins each for Richard Jackman, Ian Rattray and Fred Dove.  In the final match of the week, George Reeves rolled back the years to win his Rawreth A’s side only maximum against a very strong Lentern A team who were without their captain Paul ‘Risky’ Brown. Beating Lewis Ewers, Wale Bada and Basildon Men’s singles Champion Terry Guymer in the process a team mate described it as a ‘table tennis master class’ from the Ace. Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year     Duncan

Division 1 - DRS - Barrie Delf                        bdelf@castlepoint.gov.uk

Moving into the Xmas break, Hadleigh Forum B have regained top spot thanks to a 7-2 win over Invicta A. Tony Jacks was unplayable on the night and secured 3 wins for Hadleigh on the night with ample back up from Anthon and Dave Woolmer, although Dave Barnes did push Dave all the way surrendering a 2-0 lead. A match played in the right spirit with refreshments including mince pies, supplied by Anthon.  Lentern B kept up the pressure with a 6-3 win over Rawreth E in a match where everyone contributed at least a point. The main difference was that Gus Heath managed 3 wins all in straight sets, Rawreth unable to contend with his pimpled rubbers. Paul Churn added two with his quick-fire play to help the victory for Lentern.  With two games in hand on the leaders and only seven points the difference , you get the feeling that Lentern are favourites at this point in the season, and deservedly so, having lost only one all year.  Canvey A are always a difficult team to play and this week scored a 6-3 win over Hadleigh Forum C. Ray Wilson again doing the damage with 3 on the night, backed up by 2 from Terry Giddens.  Again another match where everyone contributed to the score.  The youngsters from Hullbridge D pulled off their second win of the season with a convincing 7-2 win over Canvey B. Both Daniel Payne and Zoe were unbeaten against the more experienced players from Canvey, with Sam Fullick contributing another good point against Geoff Banthorpe.  The final result of the week was a close 5-4 win for Warehouse B over Lentern E. Phil Puckey and Tarun Goel contributed two for the home side, but despite Mike Worship scoring 3 for the visitors he ended up on the losing side, Tony Wright adding the final point for Warehouse to seal their victory.  Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year     Barrie

Division 2 - DRS - David Barnes                    dbarnes89@btinternet.com

Clearly the festive season has kicked in with only one Division 2 result being reported this week!  Castle Point B were in a generous mood giving eight points to visiting Hockley B and only collecting one. Matthew Stringer and Paul Strutt got maximum Christmas presents whilst Martin Roberts ensured there was something in the home team’s larder for the big day. Let’s hope all those teams busy with their Yuletide shopping soon find the perfect gifts and can update the week’s remaining scores! Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year     David

DIVISION 3 - DRS Paul Strutt                        paulstrut@tiscali.co.uk

The top two teams in Division 3 were both in action this week and whilst Hockley C retained their position at the top of the table Invicta B have closed to within 2 points albeit Hockley have a game in hand.  Hockley overcame Rawreth H 6-3 with a good all round team performance Jon Knight, Laurie Witte and Stuart Adshead all winning two but all succumbing to Mike Nunn who picked up the man of the match award with his hat-trick. Hockley’s D team failed to do their C team counterparts any favours by crashing 9-0 to Invicta, John Golding Mike Keeble and Keith Baxter the successful team.  As we approach the end of the first half of the season the title appears to be a straight fight between these two teams as there is now a 20 point gap between Hockley and third placed Rawreth H. Lack of continuity appears to be affecting them and fourth placed Customs who were one of the pre-season favourites. Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year     Paul
