Sdttl 2016/7 Winter Season Weekly Reports
Week 2.
Premier Division:-
John Holland was in fine form as his hat-trick helped Hullbridge B to a 5-4 away win over Castle Point A. For the home side, Barrie Delf and Chris Jacob had wins over Matt Rolfe, and Simon Jacob went one better with an excellent victory over Glen Johnson.
Paul Sayer was Man of the Match for Thorpe Bay A in their 7-2 win over Rawreth B. However, there were some very close games and Rawreth’s Babul McLeod scored two impressive wins over Paul Whatton and John Poysden. Definitely one to watch in the season ahead.
There was a welcome return to Warehouse A for James Marshall who played some great table tennis despite his ring-rust, helping his team to a 5-4 victory over Hockley A. Hockley’s Matt Stringer staged a superb comeback in the fifth from 1-8 down to pip the aforementioned Marshall.
When Adam Brewer fails to register a win it is an indication that the opposing team must be extremely strong and that indeed was the case as Brewer and his Hullbridge A teammates came up against a Rawreth A of Tony Halling, Kevin Read and Keiran Lally. Halling went unbeaten and led Rawreth to a 6-3 victory. Kevin Caldon (2) and Sam Hume (1) picked up wins for the home side.

Division 1:-
Hadleigh Forum B have kept the pace up at the top with a consecutive 8-1 win, this time over league newcomers Castle Point B. Stalwart members Tony Jacks and Mike Tappenden scored three apiece for the Forum side, despite the presence of experienced player Mike Grout who was unable to find a way through. Mike did however, pick up the consolation point against Anthon Ranjit-Singh, with Keith also able to take Anthon to 5 sets.
Warehouse B sit in second spot on 10 points despite losing 5-4 to Invicta A. Michael Piper proved to be the difference scoring a maximum for the Invicta side, with Harry Small scoring two for the warehouse team as the pick of the bunch and just losing in 5 sets to Michael. Everyone else added one point in this close match where no-one lost all three.
Lentern D then head a bunch of teams on 7 points, again losing this match 5-4 to Hullbridge C. Hullbridge captain, Andy Seaman, scored a maximum, including a close 5 setter against Peter Lucraft. Lin Roff and Peter Lucraft scored two each with newcomer Richard Gill still looking for that elusive first league point and win.
Hadleigh Forum C had to postpone their match against Rawreth C as the floor was in a dangerous state and the other results have not yet been posted.
Barrie Delf, 1st Div DRS
Division 2:-
Hullbridge E continued their good early form with a comfortable 9 – 0 home win over Castle Point D. Daniel Zeffie, Adam Jackman and James Goddard were all too strong for their visitors.
Canvey B emulated Hullbridge’s score when they entertained Rawreth E. There were maximums from Tony Westwell, Talbot Wiseman and Harry Keys.
Martin Scarfe maintained his unbeaten record with a maximum for Hockey C in their 7 – 2 home win over Canvey C. Stuart Adshead was also unbeaten, whilst Ray Baker and Harry Keys shared Canvey’s points.
Castle Point C also won 7 – 2; at home to Invicta B. Man of the match David Jacobs was unbeaten, whilst his colleagues Mark Sayce and Sean McNabb chipped in with two each. Richard Verrinder got both Invicta’s points.
Closest match of the week was the fixture between Warehouse C and RESSC. Despite RESSC’s Stan Dyson winning all his games, Warehouse edged it 5 – 4. Their success was down to two wins each for Graham Back and Andy Humphries and one from Jonathan Allen.
David Barnes, 2nd. Div DRS
Division 3:-
“Early doors” in the second week of the season but Hockley D have set a cracking pace following up last week’s 9-0 win over Rochford LTC with an 8-1 demolition of their own F team. Jim Nariel and David Cross both scored maximums and Jason Stringer won two but teenager Harry Sawford picked up the F team’s consolation point beating Jason 11-9 in a five set thriller. The F team have now lost their first two games 9-0 and 8-1.
Canvey D have moved into second place following up their 9-0 win last week with a 6-3 win against Hockley E. An exciting match which could have gone either way with four 5 setters. Junior Tom Jarvis picked up a first win on his debut for Canvey but Geoff Banthorpe was the star man for them getting his maximum, backed up by a brace for Steve Robinson. Gary Linzell with two wins and Roger Sherman with one got the points for Hockley. Ron Rogerson was unlucky not to get at least one point but twice went down in five sets having led in both.
Invicta C bounced back from their first week defeat bringing in Captain Keith Baxter who, together with John Golding and Jon Gould proved far too strong for Warehouse E winning 8-1. Maximums for Keith and John with Jon losing out to Lesley Carroll to give Warehouse a point.
There have been some big scores so far in this division but the first 5-4 result eventually cropped up in the ‘derby’ match between Hullbridge G and H. The youngsters of the H team were given a boost when the G team only fielded two players but they were unable to capitalise on this although Abiaz Afzal picked up an impressive straight set win over Bill Hoy. 10 year old Toby Zeffie picked up a set and although Bill and Tony Molisso proved too strong for the youngsters they will take a lot of heart from this performance.
