Writtle win a superb Division two Knock Out Cup Final
The 2017/18 Chelmsford Table Tennis League Season has been concluded. The Division Two Knock-Out Cup Final between the all conquering Writtle Excalibur A (unbeaten in 18 League matches) and OCs A (who had not enjoyed the best of Seasons in the League) produced a superb encounter, arguably one of the best Finals on record. It was Writtle Excalibur A who ultimately emerged as 5-4 winners. OCs’ Kevin Worthington was on top form and he struck an early blow by beating Ryan Pitt 11-7, 11-9, 11-8. Steve Northcott added to this with an even more notable victory. He beat M&G Investments Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League Division Two Singles Champion Lee McHugh 11-9, 11-7, 11-8. Writtle Excalibur were in trouble but Richard Storey came to the rescue by defeating League Chairman David Porter narrowly 11-4, 19-17, 11-9 to level the scores at 2-2. OCs took the middle doubles courtesy of a win for the inform Worthington and Northcott combination who beat Lee McHugh and Richard Storey 11-9, 11-4, 13-11. The next two games were “massive” and Writtle showed why they are this year‘s League Champions. Ryan Pitt recovered from falling 2-0 behind to beat David Porter 10-12, 7-11, 11-9, 11-4, 11-8 and Richard Storey - the Writtle star on this occasion defeated Steve Northcott 7-11, 11-7, 11-13, 11-5, 13-11 - arguably the most crucial game of the match. OCs weren’t finished and Kevin Worthington despatched Lee McHugh over four ends 15-13, 13-11, 2-11, 11-3 to level the scores at 4-4. Everything to play for. The last game was epic and it couldn’t have been closer and it was Ryan Pitt and Richard Storey who emerged as 5-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-4, 12-10 winners against Kevin Worthington and David Porter to clinch the Cup. What a match !.
Danbury C (Allan Steel, Eamon Hall and Allan Steel) were victorious in the Division Four Cup Final defeating OCs A 5-4 but unlike the Division Two Cup Final there was little drama in the deciding doubles. Danbury called the shots here with Dave Hancox and Allan Steel beating Bob Francis and Adam Yardley decisively 11-3, 11-5, 11-6. Nat Ravlic had played his part for OCs and he beat both Eamon Hall (10-12, 11-9, 11-9, 11-7) and Dave Hancox (11-7, 3-11, 11-9, 11-4). Allan Steel’s two wins had a large say in the outcome of the match and he beat both Adam Yardley 9-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-7 and Bob Francis 11-5, 11-5, 8-11, 14-12.
The victorious Division 4 Cup Winners - Danbury C (Dave Hancox, Allan Steel, Eamonn Hall)
The League’s Annual General Meeting was held on Thursday 31 May 2018 at Old Chelmsfordians Association and it was an upbeat message that League Chairman Dave Porter was able to convey. With a large improvement in the numbers of Ladies and Juniors taking part in the League a huge vote of thanks were extended to all those people involved in Coaching in and around Chelmsford. Fittingly the League’s Award for Service to the Sport - the Rosebery / Pope & Smith Award was presented to David Gatheral - the driving force behind the Chelmsford League’s Coaching activities as well as a very busy and enthusiastic Coach himself. League President Norman Smith said how heartening it was to have witnessed “the fantastic Junior participation at the M&G Investments Chelmsford Championships - the best for many a year”. Norman Smith also thanked the meeting for the unprecedented number of nominations received for this Award this Season.
The Charlie Wheeler Memorial Award - for the Junior player who has performed best in the Chelmsford Tournament taking into account their results - as opposed to what were people’s expectations were was presented to Daniel Young (Danbury). Daniel had an exceptional weekend with a win in the under 14s Singles, as well as Runner-Up berths in the U16s Singles, Under 18 Singles, Under 21s Singles, Under 18s Doubles and Handicap Doubles. He played superbly throughout the two days.
Finally, the Hill Dowsett Junior Award for the Junior player who has scored the highest percentage of wins in League play (having taken part in 80 % of his team’s matches) was awarded to Adam Yardley (OCs E) who achieved a record of 66% in division four as he helped his team finish in second place.

Wale Bada double gives Chelmsford the edge
Chelmsford A (Wale Bada, Ryan Gooday and Eddie Ogbebor) are the 2018 winners of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League Open Knock Out Cup. They beat Danbury A 5-3 in a hard-fought Final with their top player Wale Bada clinching the victory by fighting back from 2-1 down to get the better of Gary Young 11-8, 6-11, 4-11, 11-9, 11-7. Bada had also prevailed against Eric Green in four hard fought ends 9-11, 12-10, 11-9, 11-8. Other games of significance here were a victory for the Chelmsford pairing in the opening doubles, a result that it is often a catalyst for ultimate success. Ryan Gooday and Eddie Ogbebor came up trumps against Eric Green and Steve Whiteley via a rather “wobbly” looking scoreline of 11-7, 9-11, 1-11, 11-5, 11-7 whilst Ryan Gooday played his part with a well executed 11-5, 11-9, 11-7 victory over Steve Whiteley.
The Division three Knock Out Cup Final was even closer and Maldon A clinched a League and Cup Double by beating Danbury A 5-4. Maldon A were without their top player Ciaran Whelan and Danbury took full advantage, surging into 3-1 and 4-2 1eads. Tim Pulham excelled by beating Hamish Innes 7-11, 11-9, 13-11, 7-11, 11-9 whilst Ken Sheard defeated both Steve Scholz 11-4, 11-6, 11-8 and Colin Napper 11-9, 12-10, 13-11. Hamish Innes defeated David Gatheral 11-7, 11-6, 12-10 to level the scores at 4-4 and Maldon who had won both doubles duly made it three doubles wins out of three when Colin Napper and Steve Scholz beat David Gatheral and Ken Sheard 11-8, 11-9, 11-7. So near and yet so far for a gallant Danbury A side.
Highwood A are this year’s winners of the Division Five Knock Out Cup. They beat Chelmsford B 5-3 in the Final. Their top player Melanie Bonnett won both of her singles. She beat Richard Gardiner by a last gasp 9-11, 11-3, 11-5, 6-11, 11-9 margin in the match which fittingly clinched the victory for her side and she also defeated Jamie Dowsett 11-3, 11-6, 3-11, 11-6. Keith Fitz-John made his mark with a 7-11, 11-3, 11-4, 11-5 victory over Jamie Dowsett although he missed out against Luke Richardson in five ends (8-11, 9-11, 11-7, 11-9, 8-11). Richard Gardiner had his work cut out against Nicola Pippen but he eventually edged home narrowly 4-11, 11-9, 15-13, 15-13.
Chelmsford B (Robert Shrimpton, Mark Allaway and Wiktor Delimat) are this year's Handicap Knock Out Cup winners. They beat Danbury D 5-1 in the Final. The first game had a major influence on proceedings with Wiktor Delimat beating Sam Ford after a titanic struggle (12-21, 27-25, 27-25). Danbury competed magnificently throughout but they just couldn’t “get over the finish line”. Mark Allaway beat Sam Ford 26-24, 21-19 whilst Robert Shrimpton defeated Eamon Hall 21-18, 21-18. Wiktor Delimat beat Ben Porter 21-15, 23-21. A very professional performance form the Chelmsford side on this occasion.

OCs A win Junior Knock Out Cup despite efforts of Ben Jackson
OCs A (Adam Yardley, Tanishq Kotwal and James Mitty) are the 2018 Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League Junior Knock Out Cup Champions and they won the title after a thrilling 5-4 victory in the Final against Chelmsford A (Ben Jackson, Harry Buckle and Joachin Mapes). It was a match where Ben Jackson played a major role in keeping Chelmsford A in the hunt by beating Tanishq Kotwal (10-12, 12-10, 11-8,11-9) and Adam Yardley (14-12, 11-8, 11-13, 11-7). James Mitty clinched a vital 13-11, 11-6,11-8 win over Joachin Mapes and with the scores poised at 4-4 the OCs pairing of Adam Yardley and James Mitty made no mistake against Harry Buckle and Joachin Mapes and they raced to a 11-7, 11-5, 11-6 win to clinch the victory.
This year’s Handicap KO Cup Final will be between Danbury D and Chelmsford B. Danbury D (Eamon Hall (handicap of 58), Ben Porter (43) and Sam Ford (37) beat Chelmsford J - Richard Gardiner (51), Jamie Dowsett (45) and Luke Richardson (45) 5-2. Ben Porter and Sam Ford were responsible for all five Danbury wins and in the case of Sam Ford he wasn’t pushed too hard. Ford surged home 21-11, 21-11 against Luke Richardson and 21-0, 21-14 against Jamie Dowsett. Chelmsford B looked good in beating Hatfield Peverel A 5-1. All six players were operating on similar handicaps but it was the Chelmsford side of Robert Shrimpton (66), Mark Allaway (65) and Victor Chan (64) who called the shots against Gary Ward (68), John Gagg (66) and John Parodi (64). Crucial matches here were the narrow 21-18, 20-22, 21-18 victory for Mark Allaway against John Parodi and a hard-fought 21-17, 23-21 win for Robert Shrimpton against Gary Ward - which secured the Chelmsford side’s victory. On this showing the Danbury D side look as if they will be very hard to beat in the Final.
Division two Champions Writtle Excalibur A (Lee McHugh, Matthew Brown and Ryan Pitt) were on top form as they defeated Danbury A 5-0 in their division two Knock Out Cup Semi-Final. Ryan Pitt impressed as he disposed of Tony Forster 11-3, 11-6, 11-5 whilst Lee McHugh played his part by defeating Glen Laing 9-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-9. Danbury just couldn’t get a “foot-hold” in the match and sure enough Lee McHugh and Matthew Brown clinched a 5-0 victory by beating Neil Want and Glen Laing by a rather unpredictable scoreline of 10-12, 11-6, 3-11, 11-2, 11-5.
The Division three Knock Out Cup Semi Final between Danbury A and OCs A was a closer affair with Danbury A winning 5-3. It came down to the dominance of David Gatheral and Ken Sheard in their singles encounters. They both won twice. Gatheral beat David Porter 11-8, 11-8, 11-6 and Mick Richardson 11-5, 11-6, 2-11, 8-11, 11-8 whilst Ken Sheard defeated Mick Hayes 11-7, 11-4, 9-11, 11-9 and David Porter 15-13, 11-9, 11-6.
Highwood A (Melanie Bonnett, Nicola Pippen and Keith Fitz-John) are safely through to the Division five Knock Out Cup Final. They beat Chelmsford A 5-1 in what was a very good match for Keith Fitz-John. It was Keith Fitz-John whose two wins really stood out. He beat John Wickins 11-7, 11-3, 7-11, 11-9 and Ian Austin 17-15, 7-11, 11-6, 8-11, 11-6.
In division two there was a very significant result from the match between OCs C and Liberal C. The 6-4 win for OCs means that Liberal C are relegated and the other OCs side in this division - OCs B stay up despite finishing on the same number of points as Liberal C and having won the same number of games. In this case OCs B had lost a fewer number of matches, the determining factor. Fittingly it was a very hard fought match with no one player dominating proceedings. Charles Yeung made his mark for the Old Chelmsfordians C team. He beat Andrew Huckson 11-3, 12-10, 12-10 and Hannah Pitt 11-4, 11-9, 12-14, 1-11, 11-9 although he missed out to Robin Armstrong 11-13, 10-12, 11-6, 5-11.

They were on the wrong end of a 9-1 defeat against OCs B. In recent weeks OCs B have shown a marked up turn in form and they “hit the jackpot” here with a superb 9-1 win. Steve Northcott and Kevin Worthington both bagged hat-tricks and Trevor Carter won twice. The hard-hitting Steve Northcott completed his trio of wins with an emphatic 8-11, 11-8, 11-6, 11-1 success against Gary Ward. The match between Danbury C and Danbury B finished tied at 5-5. Chris Buer won his three singles for Danbury C and this included a 3-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-8 win over Glen Laing - the best of the Danbury B players. Liberal C impressed in beating Chelmsford C 8-2. Andy Huckson and Adrian Pitt both bagged hat-tricks. Huckson had to pull out all the stops to get the better of Julie Johnson 8-11, 11-7, 6-11, 11-9, 11-9. Danbury D complete what was a large set of results for this division with a 6-4 victory over Danbury C. Sam Lowman led the way with a very good hat-trick of wins which included a last gasp 11-9, 11-2, 9-11, 9-11, 12-10 victory over Chris Buer. Lowman also defeated Daniel Young 11-5, 11-9, 11-8.
Chelmsford D completed their season with a fine 6-4 win over Hatfield Peverel B in division three. Keith Martin won his three singles whilst Richard Baxter chipped in with two wins. Baxter’s two wins included a fine 11-4, 11-8, 15-13 victory over Neil Freeman. OCs D were 6-4 winners against Maldon C. No one player stayed undefeated although Mick Richardson and David Porter (OCs) and Tom Elder (Maldon) all won twice. Adam Yardley was involved in two very tight five-enders. He missed out against Brian Riedling (4-11, 11-6, 5-11, 11-9, 11-13) but he came up trumps against Tom Elder (4-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-6, 11-9).
Danbury G with an impressive 14 wins out of 17 matches are the division four Champions. Nicky Reece-Ford (82 %) held this team together and he received solid support from fellow League stalwarts - Mo Hardy (65 %), Norman Smith (55 %) and Ivan Chaplin (40 %). They beat Maldon D 6-4. Mervyn Perriman (with a record of 81 %), another player who has enjoyed a great Season won his three singles for the Maldon side. Perriman eased past Nicky Reece-Ford 11-8, 11-3, 8-11, 11-5. “Perfect records” are pretty rare in the Chelmsford League but few people will be surprised that Terry Dowsett finished the Season with a 100 % record (47 wins out of 47). His trio of wins enabled OCs F to beat OCs G 6-4. Dowsett showed some of the ability that has taken him to the Chelmsford League Mens Singles Final (as well as to six Mens Singles victories in the Braintree League) as he downed the challenges of David Bishop (11-8, 11-4, 11-7), James Mitty (11-2, 11-5, 11-5) and Tanishq Kotwal (11-6, 11-4, 11-5). Writtle Excalibur C and Danbury H fought out a well contested 5-5 draw. Danbury H will probably consider that they came out of the match with the better result as they won the three five setters. Scott Perry beat Alan Offord 2-11, 11-5, 10-12, 11-8, 11-6 whilst Perry and Dave Powell won the doubles (against Malcolm Storey and Alan Offord) 6-11, 11-6, 3-11, 11-6, 11-9 and Dave Goody beat the luckless Alan Offord 5-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-3. Nat Ravlic was undefeated as OCs E beat Writtle Excalibur D 8-2. Brian Steward won twice for the Writtle side although he missed out against Ravlic 3-11, 13-11, 1-11, 7-11.
There was a seemingly surprising defeat for second-placed Highwood B in division five and their 7-3 setback against Chelmsford H means that they might well be overhauled by Chelmsford G who only trail them by one point but have a match in hand. Dusan Doszkoty led the way with three wins for the Chelmsford side whilst Jacqui Smith and Ben Jackson both won twice. Jacqui Smith scored a fine 11-7, 9-11, 11-5, 8-11, 11-6 victory against Nicola Pippen whilst Ben Jackson also beat Nicola. His win was by a last gasp 11-4, 9-11, 9-11, 11-7, 13-11 margin. Highwood B did better against Galleywood B and won 6-4. Melanie Bonnett, Keith Fitz-John and Nicola Pippen all won twice. Perhaps the most eye-catching win here was the hard-fought 11-5, 12-10, 5-11, 9-11, 11-9 win for Keith Fitz-John against Mark Glenister. The match between OCs H and Chelmsford J finished tied at 5-5. Stuart Wintle and Harry Rogers won twice for the OCs side whilst Richard Gardiner picked up a hat-trick for Chelmsford J.
There were 3-2 wins for Buttsbury Bears and Danbury Dragons in division 2A of the CLICK League. Tom Picton and James Hughes both won once against the leaders Galleywood Eagles although neither of them were able to beat Aidan Noguchi. Ewan Hynd (Danbury Dragons) won his two singles against Galleywood Hawks and a "share" in a doubles success with Ben Porter gave them the victory. Hynd and Porter beat Charlie Craig and Vineeth Kamma by a nerve-tingling 8-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-9, 13-11 margin. Galleywood Eagles returned to winning ways against Danbury Dragons with their leading player - Aidan Noguchi (94 %) / 15 wins out of 16 winning twice to lead them to a 4-1 victory. Noguchi beat Conor Hall 11-8, 10-12, 11-6, 11-3 and Ben Porter 11-4, 13-11, 11-7.
Black Notley Buccaneers (with 30 points out of 40) lead the way in division 2B of the CLICK League. They beat Buttsbury Beavers 3-2, good going as neither Jonny Evans or Elliot Game were able to beat Alex Headley. In the closest game of the night Alex Headley defeated Jonny Evans 11-6, 8-11, 11-6, 7-11, 11-8. Buccaneers also made no mistake in beating Chelmsford Leopards 5-0. Elliot Game and Jonny Evans completed the “whitewash”. There was a 4-1 win for Buttsbury Bulldogs against Buttsbury Beavers with James Green leading the way with two wins. He beat Ben Brown (8-11, 11-9, 11-13, 11-6, 11-7) and Daven Muldal (11-6, 11-5, 13-11).
Results went pretty much to form in division 2C of the CLICK League. Second placed Buttsbury Badgers beat Black Notley Barracudas 4-1. Ben Brown won twice to give Buttsbury Badgers the ascendancy. He beat Nicholas Grice 12-10, 13-11, 11-8 and Patrick Sweeney in a really hotly contested encounter 7-11, 11-6, 12-10, 9-11, 12-10. Buttsbury Beavers (Aidan Tucker and Oscar Hutt) ran out 5-0 winners against Chelmsford Wildcats and the Wildcats were also on the wrong end of a 5-0 defeat against Chelmsford Pumas (Joachin Mapes and Ned Ryder).

Second-placed Chelmsford B look like they are on their way to promotion to division one of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League - along with the division two leaders Writtle Excalibur A. Chelmsford B were without Jarvis against Danbury B and they were fortunate that Danbury were a player short otherwise the margin of defeat might have been heavier than 6-4. Glen Laing was undefeated for Danbury. Hatfield Peverel A are third and it is fair to say that if they had had the services of Peter Barrett earlier in the Season they would have been closer to second. Barrett was unbeaten in their 6-4 win over OCs C. Charles Yeung downed the challenge of John Gagg 11-7, 6-11, 7-11, 11-16, 12-10 in the closest game of the night. Expect Maldon to be challenging for honours in division two next year as well. Hatfield Peverel B are third and they were the week’s big winners. Duncan Taylor takes first M&G Investments Mens Singles title
The M&G Investments Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League Finals Night at Old Chelmsfordians Association on Monday 12 February 2018 saw Duncan Taylor crowned as Mens Singles Champion for the first time whilst 16 year old Gracie Edwards was a very worthy first time winner of the counter part Ladies Singles.
The evening began with a Mens Semi-Final victory for Duncan Taylor against Essex Junior first team star Sam Hume. The match turned on the first end. There was never much in it but when Taylor shaded it 16-14 it was the boost he needed. He won the second comfortably 11-4 and although the third and was much closer Taylor kept his nose in front to seal victory 11-7.
In the second Mens Singles Semi Final top seed Trevor Lloyd prevailed over four ends against the hard-hitting Wale Bada. Wale hit some stunning forehand winners but Lloyd refused to be phased by it. He dealt well with Wale‘s tricky serves and blocked a fair number of Wale’s savage forehand hits back for outright winners of his own. Lloyd won 11-8, 11-7, 9-11, 11-8.
Duncan Taylor and Charles Sweeny became the seventh different pairing to win the Mens Doubles in seven years. Taylor - more defensive than attacking and Sweeny - the most stylish of attackers are a well honed partnership. Taylor doesn’t venture too far from the table in doubles and Sweeny gives little away. They won the first game 11-6 against Paul Davison and Gary Young and although there was nothing in it in the second and third ends Charles and Duncan shaded both games 11-9, 11-9.
There was consolation in the Under 21 Singles Final for 17 year old Sam Hume who won the title for a third successive time. His opponent - 13 year-old Daniel Young displayed bags of promise for the future and as the game progressed he became more and more assured. However Sam remained in control to win 11-5, 11-6, 11-9.
The Veterans Singles Final paired Trevor Lloyd with Duncan Taylor - the same Final as the Mens Singles - by no means a unique occurrence but pretty rare all the same. Duncan Taylor made the early running and he won the first end comfortably 11-5. Lloyd upped the ante considerably and won the second and third ends 11-6, 12-10 only for Taylor to sneak home in the fourth 11-8. This match was now too close to call but it was Trevor Lloyd who stayed ahead in the fifth end to win. He was always just ahead and he finally clinched victory 11-9.
Julie Johnson and Ryan Gooday had impressed last year by winning the Mixed Doubles title. And they played equally well this year. It was Jan Fuller and Paul Davison who win the first end 11-7 but it was Julie and Ryan who came good in games two, three and four. With Ryan’s fierce backhand topspin enticing mistakes from his opponents Ryan and Julie won 11-4, 11-8, 11-8.
The Ladies Singles Final paired twice Champion Dawn Baldry with the hard hitting Gracie Edwards. Gracie was a revelation in the first end and hitting with enormous power on the backhand she raced home 11-1. She literally did not miss a shot. Dawn is no quitter and she fought back strongly in both the second and third ends. However, Gracie had no intention of being denied and she came through to win 11-9, 11-9. A marvellous M&G Investments Chelmsford League Finals night debut for Gracie Edwards.
The Mens Final enabled older players to ask the question who the last defensive winner of the Mens Singles was. Chelmsford legend Charlie Wheeler was certainly in that category whilst it was alleged that Tony Condon was also something of a defensive player. Duncan Taylor decided to attack more in this Final and it paid dividends. 13 times West Wiltshire Mens Singles Champion Trevor Lloyd not only had to cope with Duncan’s repeated topspin forays but Taylor also seemed to find that little bit extra in the rallies where he was well away from the table. Duncan Taylor won an excellent match 11-9, 11-5, 9-11, 11-5 - his first Chelmsford Mens Singles title to add to his wins in the Burnham League in 2014 and 2015.
The League would like to thank the Mayor and Mayoress Councillor Duncan Lumley and Mrs Edna Lumley for attending the Finals Night as well as M&G Investments for their very generous sponsorship of the event. M&G Investments were represented by Mrs Anna Emtage - Charity and Community Relations Manager and
her colleague Geoff Curd.

Leading protagonists - Trevor Lloyd, Sam Hume, Duncan Taylor, Dawn Baldry, Gracie Edwards and Daniel Young all had weekends they will remember. However, the abiding memory for many people was the marvellous entry of 48 players in the Junior events- the largest Junior entry for many years. It goes without saying that huge thanks are extended to the Coaching personnel who give of their time with such great enthusiasm and dedication.
It was a good weekend for the top four seeds in the Mens Singles. All four qualified for the Semi-Finals. The top seed - Trevor Lloyd came under the most pressure and at 8-10 in the fifth end in his last 16 match against Reece Seddon he looked to be a “goner“. With the Sports hall taking on an eery silence Lloyd somehow survived. Calling on all his experience Lloyd fought back and edged it 5-11, 11-8, 7-11, 11-8, 12-10. Lloyd made no mistake in his Quarter Final clash against Paul Davison - the player who had taken away his 100 % record in the League. Lloyd powered through 11-7, 11-8, 11-5. Trevor Lloyd will face last year’s Veterans Champion Wale Bada in the Semi-Final. The hard-hitting Bada came up against the “Young family” as he progressed to the last four. He beat Daniel Young 11-5, 11-6, 11-5 and then Dad - Gary 9-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-6. Second seed - 17 year-old Sam Hume and leading Veteran defender Duncan Taylor dominated the bottom half of the draw. Hume raced past David Gatherall 11-6, 11-4, 11-2 and Lee McHugh 11-5, 11-5, 11-3 whilst Duncan Taylor looked very much on top of his game as he disposed of Babul McLeod 11-9, 11-5, 11-2 and Ryan Gooday 11-6, 11-7, 11-5. Results that caught the eye in the Group stages included wins for Keith Martin over Daniel Berry (11-8, 8-11, 11-7, 11-8) for Ian Whiteside against Robert Shrimpton (11-8,11-9, 11-6) and for Lee McHugh (11-
9, 13-11, 10-12, 11-8) against Reece Seddon.
The Ladies Singles Final will be between Dawn Baldry - Chelmsford Champion in 2016 and 2017 and newcomer - 16 years old Gracie Edwards - the Essex no. two Junior and England ranked no. 34 in that age category. These two players met in the Group stages and it was Gracie who came out on top in four ends (11-3, 11-7, 10-12, 11-2) but with two players to progress to the Semi-Final Dawn was still very much “in the picture”. In the other half of the draw 22 times Chelmsford Champion Julie Johnson had to use all her experience to see off Jan Fuller 11-8, 8-11, 8-11, 11-8, 12-10. Quite a battle. The Semi-Finals were compelling as well. Dawn Baldry produced a sparkling display to beat Julie 11-6, 12-10, 11-9 - which she had done at the same stage last year - whilst Gracie Edwards - kept her composure incredibly well to beat Jan Fuller 15-17, 11-7, 11-8, 9-11, 11-9. Gracie and Dawn met in last year’s Colchester League Ladies Singles Final and Dawn shaded a marvellous match 12-10 in the decider. A potentially very exciting clash awaits us on Finals Night.
The Mens Doubles is traditionally the most “open” of events. There have been six different sets of winners in the last six years. This year’s event produced a major shock. Lee McHugh / Peter Mynard ousted the holders Wale Bada / Reece Seddon 13-11, 6-11, 10-12, 11-4, 13-11 but they fell to former runners-up Charles Sweeny / Duncan Taylor 8-11, 6-11, 6-11 in the Semi-Final. In the other half of the draw scratch - pairing Trevor Lloyd / Neil Freeman came within “an inch” of making the Final. Freeman had replaced Gary Cattermole as Lloyd’s partner and could have had no inking that he would be so close to making a Finals Night appearance. They led second seeds - Paul Davison / Gary Young 9-6 in the fifth end in their Semi-Final with Freeman playing his part in keeping the Davison / Young onslaught quiet, in what was a truly spell-binding encounter. It really was the “last throw of the dice” for Davison / Young and they kept their nerve superbly in the most high pressure of situations to triumph 12-10, 7-11, 5-11, 11-4, 13-11.
Julie Johnson / Jan Fuller - successful on the National stage in the VETTS tournaments retained their Ladies Doubles title beating Dawn Baldry / Shirley Carroll 7-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-7 and Jacqui Smith / Gracie Edwards 10-12, 11-9, 11-6, 11-6. The big shock here was the superb win for scratch pairing Jacqui / Gracie who beat Dawn / Shirley 12-10, 12-10, 11-9. A marvellously well contested trio of matches and a well deserved first medal for Jacqui from these Championships.
The holders - Aunt and Nephew combination Julie Johnson and Ryan Gooday are through to the Mixed Doubles Final. They beat Robert Shrimpton / Jacqui Smith 11-4, 11-7, 11-2 in the penultimate round. The other Semi-Final was an absolute “corker”. Jan Fuller / Paul Davison who had defeated Lee McHugh / Shirley Carroll 11-2, 8-11, 11-5, 11-7 ousted second seeds Sam Hume / Gracie Edwards 6-11, 11-9, 12-10, 7-11, 11-9 after some stunning rallies.
The Under 21 Singles Final will be between Sam Hume - the winner in 2016 and 2017 and 13 year old Daniel Young. It was Young who made his mark here. He beat Peter Windley (11-6, 11-6, 11-6) and second seed Ryan Gooday (11-7,11-6, 11-6) in the Group stages to qualify as Group Winner. An even bigger shock occurred in Group no. one and the seeded Daniel Berry failed to qualify. He lost to both Toby Kelly (11-4, 11-13, 4-11, 11-7, 3-11) and to Matthew Elliott (7-11, 13-15, 7-11). Daniel Young’s hot form didn’t dessert him. He beat Connor Payne 11-8, 11-7, 8-11, 12-10 and Sam Lowman 5-11, 13-11, 11-9, 11-6 to clinch his Finals Night appearance. He will face Sam Hume who beat Ben Jackson 11-2, 11-7, 11-3 and Ryan Gooday 11-3, 11-7, 11-8. Daniel Young and father Gary have also repeated a feat which has not been achieved since the early 1970s. They have become the first father / son combination to reach Finals Night in the same year. Older players will remember - Geoff and David Newman - the last players to achieve this.
The Veterans Final will be between Duncan Taylor and Trevor Lloyd. The holder - Wale Bada fell at the Semi-Final stage in five ends to Duncan Taylor (4-11, 5-11, 11-9, 11-9, 7-11) whilst Taylor had also impressed by beating Colin Stallwood 12-10, 11-6, 11-9. In the other half of the draw Gary Young beat Paul Davison (11-5, 15-13, 11-13, 11-9) but Young met his match against an inform Trevor Lloyd. Playing with confidence and with the booming forehand at it’s very best Lloyd won 9-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-7.
There was a first Chelmsford title for Trevor Lloyd / Colin Stallwood in the Veterans Doubles. They took the title with a 11-6, 12-10, 16-14 Final win over the top seeds Paul Davison / Gary Young.
There was a fourth win for the evergreen Ian Whiteside in the Over 60s Singles. Whiteside required four ends to beat Shirley Carroll 11-5, 12-10, 10-12, 11-9 and he sneaked home 6-11, 11-4, 9-11, 11-5, 12-10 in a tense Final against Mike Johnston.
Babul McLeod is now a three time Winner of the Over 50s Singles. He retained his title after a cliff-hanger of a Final against Julie Johnson who had beaten Keith Martin 11-6, 8-11, 4-11, 11-5, 13-11 to reach that stage. Keith Martin had ousted Dawn Baldry 9-11, 8-11, 11-5, 11-6, 11-8 a round earlier. Julie Johnson looked to be heading for victory in the Final and at 8-4 in the fourth end she must have thought she had done enough. It wasn‘t to be - Babul’s super spinny forehand (sidespin and topspin combined) didn’t let him down in his moment of real crisis and he pulled through to win 4-11, 11-6, 4-11, 11-8, 11-8. A marvellous Final.
The Junior Handicap Singles Final which was held over from the previous Friday when the earlier rounds were held saw two players with huge potential contest the Final. There was only one point difference on the Handicap rating and Aidan Noguchi came through to win 11-9, 10-12, 12-10, 11-against Matthew Elliott. There is no reason why these two lads can’t be playing in the first division in three years !.
There was no surprise in the Junior Girls Singles. Gracie Edwards took the title beating Annabel Sweeney in the Final 11-7, 11-1, 11-3. Annabel had come through a close match 11-5, 11-8, 5-11, 14-12 against Melina Abraham Victor in her Semi-Final.
It would have been a major shock if Sam Hume hadn’t retained his Junior Boys Singles title. He didn’t drop an end beating Jason Yeh (11-5, 11-2, 11-7), Connor Payne (11-6, 11-4, 11-7) and Daniel Young (11-3, 12-10, 11-2) in the Final. Daniel Young - the “busiest player” of the weekend by some distance, beat Matthew Elliott 9-11, 11-5, 11-3, 11-3 in his Semi-Final.
Sam Hume / Connor Payne scored their third successive win in the Junior Doubles. They beat Gracie Edwards / Daniel Young in a well contested Final 11-2, 8-11, 11-4, 12-10. Gracie Edwards / Daniel Young had to come back after losing the first end in their Semi-Final to get the better of Toby Kelly / Jason Yeh 9-11, 11-4, 11-8, 11-5.
Daniel Young, at 13 years of age, but already one of the leading Division two players in the League was a massive favourite for the Under 14 Singles title. He didn’t disappoint. He beat Callum Caldwell (11-2, 11-2, 11-2), Ben Porter (11-5, 11-4, 11-5), Charlie Craig (11-6, 11-5, 11-1) and Harry Buckle (11-7, 15-13, 11-2) in the Final. Full commendation here to Harry Buckle for pushing such a high ranked opponent so close. With 10 groups of players the entry in this event is hugely promising for the future of the League and let’s say it again - it needs to be said - huge thanks are extended to the Coaching personnel who give of their time with such enthusiasm and dedication.
Gracie Edwards made League history by becoming the first girl to win the Under 16 Singles. The event was reformatted in 2005 following a change in the age-groups at National level and older players will remember Julie Dowsett, Joanne Cook, Kate Gower, Alison Gower and Hannah Cook who all won the Under 15 Singles. But it is Gracie who takes the honours of becoming the first girl to win the Chelmsford Under 16 title. Her Final - and you will probably guess - against Daniel Young was a “roller coaster ride” of attacking Table Tennis and Gracie fought back from 2-0 down to win 7-11, 10-12, 11-9, 11-8, 11-7. Harry Buckle and Toby Kelly - two more players to watch out for in the future lost in the Semi-Finals.
Sunday’s play was dominated by the Divisional Singles. Lee McHugh, so impressive on the Saturday was the obvious favourite for the Division two Singles and he duly obliged. He beat Richard Storey (3-0), Peter Windley (3-1), Michael Johnston (3-2) and in the Final he came through in four action packed ends against Ian Whiteside (12-10, 12-14, 11-6, 11-7). Whiteside, playing as well as ever had beaten Neil Freeman (3-0), Victor Chan (3-1) and Robert Shrimpton (3-0).
The seedings went to plan in the Division three Singles. Ciaran Whelan, the favourite took the title with a four game win in the Final over David Gatheral (11-8, 11-2, 5-11, 13-11). Neil Freeman and Rod Maclennan were the losing Semi-Finalists. Maclennan made his mark by ousting Dawn Baldry 12-14, 11-7, 12-14, 13-11, 11-5.
The favourite also came out on top in the Division four Singles. Mervyn Perriman came through in five ends to capture the title against Malcolm Storey (8-11, 8-11, 11-3, 11-2, 11-8). Mark Glenister and Alan Steel both lost at the Semi-Final stage.
There is a new name on the Division five Singles trophy. Richard Gardner proved to be the man to beat with wins over Mark Glenister (3-0), Jamie Dowsett (3-0) and in the Final - Ben Jackson (9-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-5).
The Handicap Singles is still a popular event, although not quite as popular as in it’s hey day. Connor Payne (playing off a handicap of 55) came through to take the title leaving Mark Glenister, Daniel Anderson, Mervyn Perriman and Colin Barham trailing in his wake. His Final victim was Ciaran Whelan and he won decisively 21-6, 21-16. Ciaran Whelan had powered his way past Daniel Berry. Lee McHugh, Dave Carter and Gary Young to battle his way into the Final.
The weekend was concluded with the Handicap Doubles and the title went to Dawn Baldry / Dave Carter who beat Richard Gardner / Daniel Young 11-8, 14-21, 21-18 in the Final. The losing Semi-Finalists were Jamie Dowsett / Trevor Collin and Peter Windley / Daniel Berry.
The M&G Investments Chelmsford League Finals Night takes place on Monday 12 February 2018 at Old Chelmsfordians Association, Lawford Lane, Roxwell Road, Chelmsford at 19.30 hours. It should be very interesting this year with a new name certain to capture the Mens Singles crown. Admission is free.

Press Report Issued 28 January 2018New name on the Chelmsford M&G Investments Mens Singles trophy this year
It’s that time of the year again and the 2018 M&G Investments Chelmsford & District Table League Table Tennis Championships take place at Hylands School next weekend (Friday 02 / Sunday 04 February 2018). Would all players please note that on Saturday 03 February 2018 access to Hylands School will only be via the main entrance to the School - off Writtle Road / Chelmsford Road (unless you are travelling on foot). The main entrance is some 400 yards beyond the Savernake junction. Access on Friday and Sunday will be via the normal Sherwood Drive. Admission to the event is free and it is hoped that former players will pop in over the three days. Finals Night takes place on Monday 12 February 2018 at Old Chelmsfordians, Roxwell Road, Chelmsford at 19.30 hours.
Perhaps for the first time in recent memory there will be no former Champions taking part in the blue riband event - the Mens Singles. Last year’s Champion Ross Saxby has left the area and the three previous winners - Tony Halling, Ben Warner and Steve Joslin haven’t played in the League this Season. 2012 / 2013 Champion Alex Abbott hasn’t entered. Trevor Lloyd, a highly experienced Wiltshire County player - relatively new to the area and very impressive in League matches this year is the top seed and Sam Hume, the very composed and improving Essex no. one Junior is seeded second. The joint no. three seeds are top Veterans Duncan Taylor and Wale Bada whilst the four joint no. five seeds are also likely to be equally competitive in the shake-up for honours. Stand up - Paul Davison, Gary Young, Ryan Gooday and Reece Seddon. Group 10 only contains three players but it has the potential to be the most hotly contested. Reece Seddon takes on Ciaran Whelan and Lee McHugh.
The year’s Ladies Singles looks especially interesting this year. The winner for the last two years - hard-hitting Dawn Baldry will have to face Shirley Carroll and another newcomer - Essex Junior first team player - Gracie Edwards in her Group and she will know that she will have to be at her very best to come out on top. In the other group Linda Roff takes on Jan Fuller and 22 times Champion Julie Johnson. A very difficult event “to call” although Julie Johnson’s massive “level of experience” may well stand her in good stead.
The Mens Doubles is often one of the most open of events and this year this looks like it will again be the case. The holders -Wale Bada and Reece Seddon take their place at the top of the draw whilst Paul Davison and Gary Young are seeded second. The joint no. three seeds - Gary Cattermole / Trevor Lloyd and Duncan Taylor / Charles Sweeny will also have high expectations of doing well.
The counter part Ladies Doubles only features three pairs but all three are capable of making their mark. The holders Julie Johnson / Jan Fuller will take on Lin Roff / Gracie Edwards and Dawn Baldry / Shirley Carroll.
The Mixed Doubles is another event where upsets aren’t uncommon. Ryan Gooday / Julie Johnson - the winners last year are favourites with the refreshingly young pairing of Sam Hume / Gracie Edwards seeded second. Other pairings who cannot be discounted are Gary Young / Linda Roff, Paul Davison / Jan Fuller, Lee McHugh / Shirley Carroll and former runners-up Ciaran Whelan / Dawn Baldry.
The number of entrants in the Veterans Singles is well down this year. The holder - Wale Bada is the top seed in the Over 40s event - with Trevor Lloyd who looks set for a very busy weekend, seeded second. Duncan Taylor and last year’s runner-up Paul Davison are the joint no. three seeds. Two other players equally capable of winning - Gary Young and Colin Stallwood make up the seeds. Group one looks interesting here. Duncan Taylor takes on Gary Cattermole and Keith Martin.
Babul McLeod, the Over 50s Singles winner in 2014 and 2017 is the no. one seed in the Over 50s Singles but it is Trevor Lloyd who will be the player to beat. Ian Whiteside and Julie Johnson are expected to reach the Semi-Finals. Ian Whiteside, a four times Champion in the Over 60s Singles is the top seed in this event with Michael Johnston and Trevor Carter likely to offer the stiffest challenges. Gary Young will be looking for his fourth success in the Veterans Doubles. He is paired with Paul Davison this year. Their opponents in the Final are expected to be Colin Stallwood / Trevor Lloyd.
Sam Hume is a heavy favourite in the Under 21s Singles. But with players of the calibre of Ryan Gooday, Sam Lowman, Daniel Berry and Daniel Young in the draw he won’t take anything for granted. It’s the same in the Junior Boys Singles and Sam Hume should take the title. His Final opponent is expected to be Daniel Young with Connor Payne and Matthew Elliott expected to “exit” in the Semi-Finals. Gracie Edwards will be looking to become the first female winner of the Under 16s Singles. She is expected to meet Daniel Young in the Final. Toby Kelly and Harry Buckle are seeded to reach the Semi-Finals. Daniel Young is a heavy favourite in the Under 14s Singles with Harry Buckle expected to contest the Final. Connor Payne / Sam Hume will be looking for win no. three in the Junior Doubles although they won’t have it all their own way if their Final opponents turn out to be Gracie Edwards / Daniel Young.
After a gap of two years the Junior Girls Singles returns to the programme. There are no surprises here and Gracie Edwards is a very heavy favourite with Annabel Sweeny expected to challenge her in the Final.
Sunday‘s events will be dominated by the Divisional Singles. These are always difficult to “call”. Those players who are so dominant in League matches don’t always have it all their own way in tournament conditions. Lee McHugh is the top seed in the Division two Singles with Ian Whiteside expected to challenge him in the Final. However the composition of three groups gives you a taste of how competitive this event is. Group one sees Daniel Anderson take on Daniel Young and Richard Baxter whilst Group three sees Ryan Pitt come “face to face” with Charles Yeung and Mike Johnston. Group seven is also compelling - Victor Chan takes on Trevor Carter and Richard Storey. Ciaran Whelan is favourite in the Division three Singles with David Gatheral seeded to reach the Final. Group three looks especially interesting here. Wiktor Delimat faces Dawn Baldry and Malcolm Storey. Mervyn Perriman is the top seed in the Division four Singles with Steve Siggs seeded second. Expect the experienced duo - the joint no. three seeds - League Secretary Dave Moles and former League Press Officer - Mo Hardy to challenge strongly for honours here. Martin Hiskey is expected to face Mark Glenister in the Division five Singles Final with Addi Kamma and Martin Goddard seeded to bow out at the Semi-Final stage.
With a massive entry of 46 players it was necessary to play the Junior Handicap Singles from the M&G Investments Chelmsford Championships at the Melbourne Athletics Centre on Friday 26 January 2018. Chelmsford Level II Coach Keith Martin summed it up “I’ve not seen so many Juniors taking part in a Chelmsford event for many years and better still the standard of play was very encouraging”. The Final will be played at the Championships next weekend and will feature Matthew Elliott and Aidan Noguchi. Elliott had a real “hum-dinger” of a battle against Connor Payne (with just one point separating the two players). Elliott edged this one - 12-10, 12-14, 7-11, 11-4,11-9 and he beat Melinda Abraham-Victor 11-6, 11-9, 11-5 to book his Semi-Final appearance. Here Elliott came though in four ends (11-4, 8-11, 11-7, 11-7) against Ben Porter - although it is clear that his opponent has a lot of potential for the future. Aidan Noguchi came through the other half of the draw but it could have been very different. In the first round Jason Yeh led Aidan Noguchi 9-1 in the final set. It was “last throw of the dice time“ for Noguchi and by increasing his consistency levels massively he fought back and pipped his opponent 6-11, 11-3, 11-8,9-11, 12-10. Vineeth Kamma axed the very promising Harry Chivers in a tight match (11-13, 12-10, 12-10, 11-5) and then Alex Porter by a last gasp 11-7, 8-11, 5-11, 11-9 , 13-11 margin. However, in the Semi-Final it was Noguchi - who clearly had the “bit between his teeth” after that match against Jason Yeh and further wins over Joachin Mapes (12-10, 11-8, 11-7) and Sam Mortimer - Ford (11-6, 13-11, 11-4) who came through. Noguchi beat Vineeth Kamma 11-1, 9-11,11-8, 11-6 to book his Final appearance.

Press Report Issued 21 January 2018
Top class display from Colin Stallwood
Maldon A have recaptured the lead in division one of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League and they did this in style with a comprehensive 8-2 victory over second-placed Chelmsford A. Maldon now hold a four point lead over Chelmsford but more tellingly they also have a match in hand. Alex Abbott and Colin Stallwood were both undefeated whilst Trevor Lloyd won twice. Lloyd missed out against 2017 M&G Investments Chelmsford Closed Championships Veterans Champion Wal Bada in five ends (5-11, 9-11, 11-6, 11-6, 6-11). Colin Stallwood was on fine form for the Champions-elect and he beat Ryan Gooday (13-15, 11-8, 11-4, 11-5), Wal Bada (6-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-9) and Eddy Ogbebor (11-9, 11-8, 14-12) - an excellent hat-trick of successes. Danbury A are a clear third and they beat OCs A 8-2. Gary Young and Steve Whiteley were both undefeated for Danbury. Expect Gary Young to challenge strongly for the Veterans and Mens Singles titles at this year’s M&G Investments Chelmsford Closed Tournament.
Division two leaders Writtle Excalibur A produced a top notch performance against OCs C and ran out 10-0 winners. Ryan Pitt, Lee McHugh and Matthew Brown gave nothing away. Pitt won a hard-fought opening encounter with a 11-9, 10-12, 11-8, 8-11, 11-7 success against Peter Windley and that turned out to be a fair indication of the evening’s play. As hard as the OCs team tried Writtle Excalibur had all the answers. Chelmsford B stay second. Robert Shrimpton was undefeated as they beat Danbury C 7-3. Danbury’s Daniel Young had to pull out all the stops to get the better of Paul Nicol 7-11, 11-7, 11-7, 10-12, 11-9. Hatfield Peverel A are third and they produced their best performance of the Season to beat Liberal C 9-1. The “old guard” - John Gagg and Gary Ward were both undefeated. Ward was on top form. He beat Hannah Pitt (11-8, 11-9, 9-11, 11-7), Andy Huckson (11-7, 11-8,11-9) and Paul Lombardi (11-8, 11-5, 11-6). The match between Danbury B and Chelmsford C produced a closely fought encounter. No single player stayed undefeated and Danbury B shaded the match 6-4. The Danbury duo of Neil Want and Ken Sheard and Chelmsford’s Julie Johnson and Alistair Piper all won twice. Ken Sheard pipped Alistair Piper 9-11, 6-11, 11-4, 1-17, 13-11 in the closest encounter of the evening. Danbury D who are fourth beat OCs B 7-3. Sam Lowman won his three singles and with a 76 % record he is clearly enjoying a consistent Season. He showed a lot of composure to hit through the very solid defence of Robbie Burton 11-8, 11-7, 11-6.
Maldon B made it 10 wins out of 11 in division three by beating Chelmsford D 7-3. Gordon Fairchild scored an excellent victory over Ciaran Whelan (5-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-8) but he didn’t have the same impact against an unbeaten Hamish Innes (4-11, 8-11, 6-11). Jarek Pietraszuk was on target for Chelmsford and he came through a roller-coaster encounter with Colin Napper 11-2, 8-11, 11-9, 6-11, 16-14. Bottom side Hatfield Peverel C scored a welcome 6-4 win over Hatfield Peverel B. Their leading player Trevor Collin scored his second “full-house” of the Season with three good wins. He beat Gareth Davies (11-7, 17-15, 9-11, 11-5), Guy McKenzie (11-5, 14-12, 11-3) and Dave Fiddeman (11-8, 12-10, 8-11, 14-12). It was “honours shared” in the match between OCs D and Writtle Excalibur B. Louis Brown was undefeated for the Writtle Excalibur side. He beat David Porter 11-9, 7-11, 11-6, 9-11, 13-11 in his toughest examination.
Leaders OCs E were the week’s big winners in division four. Nat Ravlic and David Newman were both unbeaten in their 9-1 success against OCs G. David Newman fought back from 2-0 down to get the better of David Bishop 8-11, 7-11, 11-9, 13-11, 11-9. Second-placed Danbury G suffered their second defeat of the Season by losing 6-4 to Danbury H. Dave Goody was unbeaten for Danbury H and he completed his hat-trick with a five game win over Mo Hardy (11-4, 11-7, 8-11, 6-11, 11-4).
There was a big win for Hatfield Peverel D in division five. Alastair Brown, Peter Mortensen and Richard Drozd ran out 10-0 winners against Galleywood B. Highwood B are second - some way behind Chelmsford F and they consolidated their position with a 8-2 victory over OCs H. Nicola Pippen won her three singles and this included a fine 10-12, 11-4, 6-11, 12-10, 11-7 win over Stuart Wintle. By a quirk of the fixtures chart OCs H played Highwood B again 12 days later. This time Highwood won 7-3 and Stuart Wintle gained his revenge over Nicola Pippen (11-6, 11-8, 9-11, 13-11) but he missed out against an undefeated Melanie Bonnett rather decisively (5-11, 4-11, 5-11). Chelmsford G with Martin Hiskey on top form ran out 7-3 winners over Chelmsford J. The evergreen John Wickens came out on top 11-6, 8-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-9 after a very tricky encounter against Jamie Dowsett.
Galleywood Hawks (Vineeth Kamma and Charlie Graig) ran out 5-0 winners in division 2A of the CLICK League against West Maldon. They looked to be in trouble in the doubles when trailing 2-0 against William Moore and Blaydon Farmer but they rallied really strongly to win 6-11, 5-11, 11-4, 11-7, 11-2.
All Junior players who have entered the Junior Handicap Singles at this year‘s M&G Investments Chelmsford Closed Championships should note that this event has been moved to this coming Friday (26 January 2018) at the Melbourne Sports Centre - the Chelmsford Club’s venue. Book in at 19.00 hours for a 19.15 start. If the event hadn’t been switched from the actual Tournament weekend the massive increase in the number of Junior entries would have led to the possibility of a mid-night finish on the Saturday.

Outstanding display from Hatfield Peverel’s Dave Calleja
Division two is in the spotlight this week in the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. The 5-5 draw between Chelmsford C and Hatfield Peverel saw Peverel’s Dave Calleja hit top form. Calleja opened with a fine 3-0 win over Waseem Qureshi (11-7, 15-13, 11-5) and he then scored an equally impressive five game win over Mike Johnston. This one could have gone either way and Calleja finally nicked it 7-11, 11-9, 12-14, 15-13, 11-9. In his last singles Calleja faced Chelmsford reserve Keith Martin (who had scored two excellent wins over Gary Ward and John Parodi) and Martin struck early forging a 2-0 lead. However, it wasn‘t enough as Calleja stormed back as if his life depended on it to win 7-11, 8-11, 11-5, 11-4, 11-4. Liberal C did well to beat Chelmsford C 6-4. Paul Lombardi and Hannah Pitt both won twice for the Liberal side with Hannah’s 12-10, 11-13, 12-14, 11-2, 11-9 success against Waseem Qureshi perhaps being the pick of the action. Danbury B ran out 6-4 winners over a two-man OCs B. However, OCs B who are last placed may well consider this to be a “moral” victory and they certainly fought very hard for their four points. In the games that went to five ends Steve Northcott beat Neil Want (11-8, 11-6 , 6-11, 7-11, 11-6) whilst Trevor Carter defeated Graham Briggs (11-9, 11-8, 10-12, 13-15, 11-5) and Carter also beat Neil Want (14-16, 11-9, 5-11, 11-9, 12-10).
Maldon B are taking a “Manchester City” like grip on division three. They made it 75 points out of 100 with a commanding 9-1 win over OCs D with Colin Napper and Ciaran Whelan both winning their three singles. Perhaps the big shock here was the game that Maldon lost. Mick Richardson certainly made his mark with a fine four game win over Hamish Innes (15-13, 7-11, 11-8, 11-7). Whilst Maldon are setting a scorching pace second placed Hatfield Peverel B have slipped back and they lost 6-4 to Danbury F. Peter Hance and Dave Marsh both picked up two wins for the Danbury side. Dave Marsh excelled to beat Neil Freeman 11-8, 13-11, 14-12. Third placed Writtle Excalibur B moved into contention with a superb 9-1 win over Danbury E. All three Writtle players (Paul Sturton, Phil Smith and Louis Brown) hit top form and Danbury missed out in all nine singles. David Gatheral - so impressive in his opening five matches lost all three singles for the first time this Season. Paul Sturton kicked off the proceedings with a fine 11-8, 11-6, 6-11, 11-5 win over Gatheral and Louis Brown prevailed over five ends (11-9, 8-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-3). Despite no shortage of effort Gatheral also came up short against Phil Smith and he succumbed 11-8, 9-11, 8-11, 8-11. A very strong team performance from the Writtle Excalibur side.
Danbury H jumped into third place in division four by beating Maldon D 7-3. Richard Allen, Robert Kneale and Dave Powell all won twice. The ever-green Shirley Carroll was the best of the Maldon players and she beat both Dave Powell (4-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-8) and Robert Kneale (9-11, 11-5, 5-11, 11-9, 11-4). He beat Aswin Siam (11-9, 11-4, 8-11, 11-9) and Tanishq Kotwal (12-10, 9-11, 11-3, 11-9) and he completed his hat-trick by defeating James Mitty (9-11, 12-10, 11-9,
11-7).
Division five produced two 7-3 results. Chelmsford G jumped into third place by beating OCs H. Martin Hiskey led the way with a hat-trick which he completed with a very hard-fought 11-9, 7-11, 18-16, 11-8 victory over Stuart Wintle - the best of the OCs players. Chelmsford J’s Jamie Dowsett and Richard Gardiner were both undefeated against Hatfield Peverel D. Jamie Dowsett had to pull out all the stops to get the better of Alistair Brown 11-3, 15-17, 8-11, 12-10, 11-8. Quite a battle !.

They lead second-placed Hatfield Peverel B by a massive 10 points. Hatfield Peverel B won this week but their 6-4 success against seventh placed Chelmsford E wasn’t particularly convincing. Press Report Issued 19 November 2017
Big win for Maldon A
Last year’s Champions Maldon A are in third place in the first division of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. They ran out convincing 9-1 winners against OCs A after Trevor Lloyd and John Poysden had both won their three singles encounters. However as is often the case in these instances it was the game they lost which made the most interesting reading. Chris Jacob excelled here by defeating Alex Abbott 14-12, 9-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-7 in the last game of the evening. Chelmsford A stay top and they showed their class by beating a strong Liberal B side 8-2. Wale Bade and Eddie Ogbebor both won their three singles. Wale defeated Paul Davison 12-10, 7-11, 10-12. 12-10, 13-11 after a real hum-dinger of a game. Steve Pennell impressed for the losers. He defeated Ryan Gooday 13-11, 5-11, 11-13, 11-5, 11-9.
The leaders Writtle Excalibur A (Matthew Brown, Lee McHugh and Ryan Pitt) didn’t put a foot wrong against Danbury D in division two and ran out hugely impressive 10-0 winners over Danbury D. That result certainly wasn’t one you would predict !. Lee McHugh had to pull out all the stops to get the better of Cameron Gray after a marathon encounter. McHugh finally triumphed 11-7, 13-11, 21-23, 8-11, 13-11. Matthew Brown won his three singles with an economy of effort beating Dan Anderson (11-2, 11-7, 11-6), Cameron Gray (11-8, 11-7, 11-8) and George Ashley (11-9, 11-4, 11-8). Without McHugh in their line-up Writtle also beat Danbry B 6-4. Neil Want stole the show here with three good wins - his third “full-house of the Season“. Want fought back from 2-0 down to get the better of Mathew Brown 5-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-4, 11-6 in his opening encounter and he never looked back after that. Brown (78 %), Pitt (78 %) and McHugh (92%) have all made good starts to the Season and Writtle Excalibur A look to be a very good side “with depth“. My favourites for the title !. Chelmsford B are second and they impressed by beating Danbury B 9-1. Newcomer Liam Squirrel and
Rob Shrimpton both bagged hat-tricks. Shrimpton required all five ends to get the better of Tony Forster 11-9, 5-11, 11-2, 9-11, 11-9. Chelmsford C led by a hat-trick from Waseem Qureshi, (his first of the Season) beat OCs C 7-3. Qureshi fought back from 2-1 down to get the better of Tom Barker 8-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-5, 11-9.
Third-placed Danbury E impressed in division three by beating Chelmsford D 8-2. Six games were decided in the fifth end and Danbury won five of them. David Gatherall won his three singles again whilst Ken Sheard scored the slightly dubious distinction of being involved in three five-enders on the same night. Sheard beat Jarek Pietraszuk 11-7, 9-11, 3-11, 15-13, 11-6 and Wiktor Delimat 7-11, 9-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-7 but he wasn‘t able to complete his hat-trick, missing out 11-3, 8-11, 9-11, 14-12, 5-11 to Mohammed Mohseni. A special mention here for David Gatherall who has a 100 % record - 15/ 15 wins to date. Further down the table Hatfield Peverel C defeated Danbury F 7-3. Trevor Collin, Colin Barham and Dave Carter all won twice but they all missed out against the redoubtable Dave Marsh who scored his first hat-trick of the Season. Hatfield Peverel B stay second with 47 points. They survived a real scare to beat Writtle Excalibur 6-4 - good going as they trailed 4-1 at one stage. Things just wouldn’t go for them and they lost three successive five-enders. Rod Maclennan beat Dave Fiddeman 11-9, 13-11, 5-11, 8-11, 11-9 and Lin Roff excelled to get the better of Neil Freeman 16-18, 5-11,11-9, 11-7, 11-9. With Maclennan then getting the better of Gareth Davies 6-11, 11-5, 11-6, 7-11, 14-12 you can forgive the Hatfield Peverel side for thinking it wasn‘t going to be their night. To their credit they recovered and Gareth Davies eventually sealed their win by defeating Neil Thompson 11-7, 8-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-7 in the last game of the evening. The match between Chelmsford D and OCs D finished tied at 5-5. It will be the OCs side who will be the more satisfied with the result. They came out on top in all four games that went to a fifth end which enabled them to counter Wiktor Delimat’s hat-trick of wins. David Porter did well to recover from 2-0 down to get the better of Mohammed Mohseni 10-12, 8-11, 11-4, 11-5, 11-9.
Leaders Danbury G beat second-placed OCs E 6-4 in division four to retain their 100 % record. They lead by five points. Nicky Ford (89 %) shaped the victory with a hat-trick of wins although it was the second win of the evening for Adam Yardley which really stood out. Yardley defeated League President Norman Smith 11-6, 10-12, 11-5, 7-11, 21-19. Quite a battle !. OCs F were clear-cut 8-2 winners over the higher placed Danbury J. Terry Dowsett and Farooq Ahmed were both undefeated. Farooq Ahmed completed an excellent hat-trick of wins by getting the better of Allan Steel 8-11, 3-11,11-2, 11-8, 11-7. Writtle Excalibur C ran out 7-3 winners over bottom side Maldon D. Neil Thompson, Dave Moles and Steve Siggs all won twice although they all lost to Bryan Speller. Maldon D have utilised the services of no less than nine players in seven games and they may need a more settled side if they aren’t going to be relegated. OCs G scored their second win of the Season by beating Writtle Excalibur D 6-4. David Bishop led the way with three victories. Danbury H (Dave Goody, Richard Allen and Dave Powell) were 9-1 winners over Danbury K. Dave Goody completed his hat-trick of wins by beating Mick Robinson 15-13, 9-11, 7-11, 13-11, 11-6 in a well contested last game of the evening.
Chelmsford F (50 points) lead the way in division five although they have played two more games than second-placed Highwood A. They produced a very strong performance to beat fourth-placed Highwood B 9-1. Ian Austin (three wins), Jon Dyson (three wins) and Jason Clark (two wins) all played their part. Melanie Bonnett replied for the losers by beating Jason Clark 9-11, 11-3, 11-3, 11-5. Hatfield Peverel D scored their first win of the Season by beating Anglia Ruskin University 7-3. Paul Mulley bolstered the Peverel line up and his unbeaten return gave them an advantage. With eight players utilised so far this is another side who have called on a lot of personnel. Chelmsford G were excellent 8-2 winners over Galleywood B. Martin Hiskey and Steven Chambers both won their three singles. Chambers fought back from 2-0 down to defeat Nathan Blore 9-11, 9-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-8. Chelmsford J led by a Matthew Elliott clean-sheet beat Chelmsford H 8-2. James Hughes won twice and he had to pull out all the stops to get the better of Ben Jackson over five widely fluctuating ends 11-6, 3-11, 11-7, 4-11, 11-9.

Fraser Heard scored a very hard-fought 11-9, 11-9, 10-12, 13-11 victory over Noah Sage for the losers. Danbury Dragons stay second and they beat Black Notley 5-0. Dan Atkinson and Ben Porter were both undefeated although Porter had to pull out all the stops to get the better of Elliot Game 11-3, 8-11, 11-6, 10-12, 11-6.

Close victory for Tom Barker inspires OCs C to clear-cut victory
The Handicap Knock Out Cup should theoretically give all sides an equal chance of winning and not surprisingly it remains the best supported of the Cup Competitions run by the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. Games are still played up to the traditional 21 points as it is easier to calculate the Individual Handicaps using a “wider range” of points.
OCs C are through to the second round. Tom Barker (playing off a handicap of 61) clearly gave his team a big lift in their match against Chelmsford D by beating Connor Payne (58) 17-21, 21-18, 23-21 in the opening encounter and Chelmsford never really recovered. Peter Windley (66) and Chris Jacob (70) were also on target as OCs C ran out 5-0 winners. The division five line-up of Chelmsford - Steven Chambers (49), Michael Whelpdale (47) and Martin Hiskey (47) did well to beat Danbury A 5-3. Whelpdale played his part with a hard-fought 21-10, 20-22, 21-19 victory over Cameron Gray (63). Martin Hiskey sealed the Chelmsford victory by beating Dan Anderson (64) 21-18, 21-18. Chelmsford H are also safely through to the next round. Ian Austin (48), Jacqui Smith (46) and Harry Buckle (43) defeated Danbury C 5-3. Ian Austin played his part with a last gasp 18-21, 22-20, 22-20 success against Nicky Ford (55). Ford had earlier fought back to beat Harry Buckle after suffering a heavy first game set-back. Ford eventually pulled through 11-21, 22-10, 21-18. Division two stalwarts Hatfield Peverel - represented by John Parodi - 64, Gary Ward - 68 and John Gagg - 66 usually do well in this Competition. They showed their usual “savvy” by beating Danbury B 5-2. John Parodi had to pull out all the stops to get the better of Herbie Smith (61) 21-15, 15-21, 22-20 whilst Gary Ward secured the Peverel victory by defeating Herbie Smith 22-20, 21-17. Chelmsford J from division five are also through to the next round. Jamie Dowsett (45), Peter Davenport (45) and Ray Booty (42) defeated OCs A 5-3. Jamie Dowsett scored the all-important fifth win, beating Mick Hayes (61) 21-17, 17-21, 21-18.
There was success for Chelmsford players - Jan Fuller and Julie Johnson at the recent VETTS Midlands Masters Tournament at Tipton. Jan and Julie won the Over 50s Ladies Doubles. They captured the title by beating Christine Burke (Northumberland) and Christina Wright (Notts) 8-11, 12-10, 11-4, 11-9 in the Final. Peter Radford, an integral part of the Galleywood first team squad a couple of years ago continued his good form at National level in the Over 70s age category and he annexed the Over 70s Singles title with a 11-2, 13-11, 11-9 Final win over Nat Richardson (Oxfordshire).
The division three match between Writtle Excalibur B and Danbury F resulted in a hard-fought 5-5 draw. Danbury F will probably be the more satisfied with the result as they won all three five enders. Writtle’s Lin Roff was on the losing side all three times although she battled back well to beat Herbie Smith 11-3, 11-8, 11-6. Tony Forster beat Lin Roff 3-11, 11-5, 7-11, 11-6, 11-8 and Dave Marsh defeated Lin 11-6, 11-6, 11-13, 3-11, 12-10. The Danbury pairing of Forster and Marsh also prevailed in the Doubles beating Lin and Louis Brown after a hugely fluctuating encounter 11-6, 9-11, 11-8, 4-11, 11-1.
Chelmsford Leopards made it four wins out of four in Division 1B of the CLICK League. Harry Buckle and James Donald were 4-1 winners over Butsbury Beavers. Buckle and Donald won all four singles but missed out 10-12, 11-9, 9-11, 11-8, 8-11 to Aidan Tucker and Alexei Antoniou in a well contested doubles encounter. Chelmsford Tigers scored their first win of the Season. Louis Burnett and Ryan Armstrong defeated Buttsbury Badgers 4-1. Ryan Armstong was undefeated. Hume’s hat-trick gives Liberal A the edge
Three players notched up hat-tricks in the first division of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League this week. However, only one of those players - Sam Hume was on the winning side. Hume won his three singles as Liberal A beat Galleywood A 7-3. Gary Brignall showed up well for the Galleywood side. He not only beat Gracie Edwards 11-7, 11-8, 11-8 but he excelled to get the better of Gary Cattermole 11-9, 11-9, 3-11, 4-11, 11-8. Brignall also gave a hugely creditable showing against Essex no. one Junior Sam Hume before succumbing 11-6, 4-11, 11-5, 6-11, 8-11. Ace defender Duncan Taylor was on top form for Rawreth A against Liberal B although it was Liberal who won 6-4. Obituary - Linda Hales (was Barrow)
The Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League Committee are deeply saddened to inform you of the death of Linda Hales - who as Linda Barrow was the Chelmsford & District League Ladies Singles Champion in 1974, 1975 and 1976. In the mid 1970s Linda was definitely the Lady to beat in the Chelmsford League and she also won the Ladies Doubles with Clare Hamilton in 1975, 1976, and 1977 and the Mixed Doubles five times. In1976, 1977, 1979 and 1980 she paired up with Dave Newman and she was also successful in 1987 with Dave Bowles. Linda was a formidable player throughout her life reaching the dizzy heights of England no. two Junior and also playing for Essex Senior first team. In more recent years she moved to Dorset with her late husband Tom (best known as Chairman of the Burnham League) and she represented Dorset first team at Veterans level. She excelled in 2014 and with Welsh starlet Chloe Thomas she won the JM Rose Bowl (the National Ladies Town Knock Out Cup) for the third time representing Bournemouth. In 2016 she moved back to Essex and was still playing regularly at a high standard. She was on holiday in Australia when she was taken ill and sadly she never recovered. Popular, friendly and well known on the Veterans National circuit she valued her Table Tennis friends dearly and will be greatly missed.
