Congratulations are extended to Gordon  Gatheral – the 2019 recipient of the Rosebery / Pope & Smith Award – the League’s Award for service to the Sport. League President Norman Smith who presented the Award at the recent Annual General Meeting thanked League members for their nominations and he  praised Gordon for his efforts and “massive impact” . After a spell as Competitions Secretary Gordon  became Divisional Secretary and he energised Division one by creating the “split division format” this Season.  He is a qualified Coach and in conjunction with Chelmsford Council he has established the thriving “Bat & Chat” scheme at Melbourne Athletics stadium which has 35 regular players and is now looking to take on a competitive function as well. He shows real enthusiasm in everything he takes on.

There was further recognition for the Gatheral family at the recent County Annual General Meeting where Gordon’s son – David was presented with the prestigious  Corti Woodcock Award – the County’s Award for service to the Sport. The 2018 recipient of the  Rosebery / Pope & Smith Award David has been responsible for getting loads of people playing the Sport with his drive, commitment and enthusiasm  in setting up  coaching opportunities  and as an enthusiastic and  Qualified Coach  as well.

The League were saddened to hear of the retirement of Brian Cook – the long standing League Treasurer and Vice Chairman of the League who  has also acted as the purchaser and co-ordinator of the League’s trophies over many years. Brian first joined the League Committee in 1974 and after a move to Muswell Hill he returned to Chelmsford in 1983 and took on the role of League Press Officer. In the days when Press coverage was strictly limited to the local newspapers he often achieved huge coverage. Brian has been the author of the League’s Finals Night programme for many years and has enjoyed taking on the microphone duties at the Closed Championships on numerous occasions. A recipient of the Rosebery / Pope & Smith award on three occasions (1987, 2006 and  2015)  he will be hugely missed. David Gatheral will replace Brian Cook as the League Vice Chairman whereas Mathew Brown will take on the role of Treasurer.

Maldon’s Thomas Page is the 2019 recipient  of the Charlie Wheeler Memorial Award – the League’s Award for the” best performance” by a Junior player  in the League’s Closed Championships. With a record of 64 % in division three  expect Thomas to be pushing for a first division berth within the next 12 months.

Galleywood’s Charlie Craig is the recipient of the  Hil Dowsett Award – the Award for the Junior who having played in 80 % of his team’s games achieved the best record in League matches. Charlie was part of the Galleywood C team who were runaway winners of division five.

Those players who follow Veterans Table Tennis at national level will have been delighted to have heard that Neil Charles (M&G Investments Chelmsford Mens Singles Champion in 2008, 2010 and 2011) was crowned National VETTS Champions two weeks ago in Wolverhampton. After beating the highly ranked Andrew Wilkinson (Northumbeland) in the Semi-Final he excelled to get the better of England no. one Veteran Lorestas Trumpauskas 3-1 in the Final. Lorestas was of course M&G Investments  Chelmsford Mens Singles Champion in 1999, 2000 and 2001.

Finally the Chelmsford League would like to extend their huge thanks to M&G Investments who sponsored the League’s Closed Championships since 1999. It has been a pleasure working with their Co-Ordinator Anna Emtage. The League Committee will now be looking for a new sponsor or for sponsor(s) who  would like to take “ownership” of individual events or competitions.

Chelmsford C stay third and they beat a two man Danbury C 9-1. Cristian Barnardo, Mike Johnston and Wiktor Delimat won all their singles. Newcomer Cristian Barnardo closed proceedings with a 16-14, 11-7, 11-2 victory over Neil Want.

Team work saw OCs F home in division three. Tanishq Kotwal, Russell Hall and Farooq Ahmed all won twice as they beat Writtle E 7-3. Farooq Ahmed had to pull out all the stops to get the better of Dave Moles 9-11, 11-5, 8-11, 11-4, 12-10.

Danbury J’s magnificent run of 15 wins out of 15 has come to an end in division four. And in perhaps the performance of the week it was brothers Vineeth and Sudheep Kamma who led the way as Chelmsford F beat the leaders 6-4. Vineeth was undefeated and Sudheep won twice. 15 year-old Vineeth excelled by beating Robert Kneale in five ends (6-11, 11-3, 7-11, 11-4, 11-4) whilst 11 year-old Sudheep showed terrific composure to defeat Richard Allen 14-16, 11-6, 5-11, 13-11, 13-11. The improvement of these two players in recent weeks has been enormous. They both receive Coaching from Lee McHugh and clearly his energy and enthusiasm  is rubbing off on his charges.  Chelmsford E ran out 8-2 winners over Highwood B. Jon Dyson and Dusan Doszkoty were both undefeated whilst another Junior player - Harry Buckle notched up fine wins over Francis Whitbread (11-6, 11-9, 11-7) and Martin Goddard (11-6, 12-10, 11-8). Writtle F ran out 8-2 winners over OCs G. David Meah and Colin Griffiths both won their three singles. However, Writtle F didn’t fare so well against Hatfield Peverel C and they lost 6-4. Nick Duce won his three singles for the Hatfield Peverel C team. Ian Hockley was the best of the Writtle players with two wins, although he struggled to beat Alastair Brown before he pulled clear in the fifth end (12-10, 9-11, 11-9, 4-11, 11-3).

Division five leaders Galleywood C scored their 13th win of the Season beating Maldon E 7-3. Mark Glenister was undefeated for Galleywood but there was a first defeat of the Season for Gary Copsey who lost to Denis Crapnell 6-11, 14-16, 11-4, 11-9, 8-11. Glenister beat Crapnell 11-13, 11-7, 11-6, 11-2. Chelmsford G (Andy Swales, Sarah Austin and Revox Matthews) won all nine singles as they  beat Hatfield Peverel D 9-1. However, Andy Swales and Sarah Austin conspired to lose a very hard fought doubles 11-8, 11-9, 10-12, 9-11, 11-13 to Andy Simmonds and Richard Drozd.  Chelmsford H were 7-3 winners against Hatfield Peverel E and there was a first “full-house” for 15 year-old Nyree Marsh - the 2019 M&G Investments Chelmsford Championships Junior Girls Singles Champion. She beat Phil West (11-5, 7-11, 11-7, 11-8), John Kuhl (11-4, 16-14, 9-11, 11-7) and Davina Brazier (8-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-8). Chelmsford J ran out 8-2 winners against OCs H. Revox Matthews and Takunda Nerutanga both won their three singles whilst Jacqui Smith won twice.

Leaders Danbury Dragons scored their fourth win out of five in division 2A of the CLICK League. Ewan Hynd and Sam Mortimer-Ford were both undefeated although Ewan Hynd was stretched to beat Cameron Waite 9-11, 4-11,  11-7, 11-4, 12-10.

West Maldon top the table in division 2B of the CLICK League. Noah Sage (two wins) and Oliver Wylie (one win) ran out 4-1 winners against Danbury Demons. Oliver Wylie battled hard to beat Elliot Gardiner 11-8, 9-11, 13-11, 12-10. Buttsbury Badgers beat Buttsbury Bulldogs 4-1. Ben Brown was unbeaten for the Badgers but his match against George Standish could have gone either way. Brown finally sealed victory 11-9, 9-11, 11-6, 9-11, 12-10. Buttsbury Bears (Oscar Hutt and Harry Hutt) defeated Chelmsford Leopards 3-2. However, Cleon Fernandes was unbeaten for  the Leopards. He beat Harry Hutt 11-2, 9-11, 11-7, 7-11, 12-10 after another pulsating five ender.

Chelmsford Panthers were 5-0 winners in CLICK division 2C. Malachi O’Leary and Theo Griffiths were both unbeaten against Chelmsford Eagles. However, it was far from plain sailing for Malachi O’Leary who required five ends to beat both Jixuan Li (9-11, 11-8, 7-11,11-9, 11-5) and Charlie Donald (7-11, 10-12, 11-5, 11-9, 11-9). Chelmsford Falcons led by an undefeated Oliver Cheung won 4-1 against Buttsbury Bats. Cheung found Leo Comer “a tough nut to crack” and he finally secured victory 11-7, 8-11, 3-11, 11-4, 11-7.

Fine showing from Casey Cross

Casey Cross has proved to be an excellent acquisition for Chelmsford Table Tennis Club in division 1A of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. He was at his best as second-placed Chelmsford A beat Danbury A 7-3. Cross took the notable scalp of Daniel Young 11-9, 3-11, 11-6, 7-11, 12-10. The 14 year-old Daniel Young has been one of the success stories of the season so far and he reached the Mens Singles Final at the recent Southend Championships by beating 2015 M&G Investments Chelmsford Mens Singles Champion Ben Warner 3-2 in the Semi-Final. A magnificent performance. Young showed his class here and he scored a fine five game win over Edward Ogbebor 14-12, 5-11, 11-8,7-11, 11-3. Steve Whiteley suffered two “narrow misses”. He lost 9-11, 11-3, 6-11, 11-7, 10-12 to Casey Cross and 9-11, 5-11, 15-13, 11-9, 12-14 to 2019 M&G Investments Chelmsford Ladies Singles Champion Tulay Dundar.  Danbury A also beat OCs A 8-2. Daniel Young impressed again downing the challenges of Paul Lucas (11-8, 11-4, 11-3) and Terry Dowsett (11-4, 11-7, 11-5). Steve Whiteley also made his mark with a fine 3-11, 8-11, 12-10, 11-8, 11-9 win over Paul Lucas. Whiteley is also enjoying a fine Season. OCs A were without Lucas against the “Champions elect” Maldon A and they were well beaten 10-0. Alex Abbott, Trevor Lloyd and John Poysden gave nothing away.  Lee McHugh - another up and coming player starred as Writtle A beat Rawreth 6-4. His trio of wins included a fine 11-7, 3-11, 1-11, 11-5, 11-5 win over Reece Seddon.

Liberal included Paul Davison in their side for their division 1B fixture against Writtle B. Davison is no one’s idea of a division 1B player and by staying undefeated he led Liberal  to a 8-2 win. Davison had to work hard to beat Gary Cattermole 11-9, 11-9, 13-11 whilst Cattermole hit back with a fine 11-5, 11-7, 11-8 win over Adam Buxton. In another very close encounter Buxton had to pull out all the stops to get the better of Phil Smith 11-7, 7-11, 8-11, 11-8, 12-10. Danbury B also won 8-2 and Ian Whiteside and Chris Buer both notched hat-tricks as they beat Hatfield Peverel A. Ian Whiteside had to fight hard to see off Julie Johnson 6-11, 11-2, 10-12, 11-6, 11-9 whilst Steve Buer was similarly stretched against Jan Fuller before he won 8-11, 10-12, 11-9, 11-3, 11-9. The leaders Galleywood A ran out narrow 6-4  winners against Chelmsford B. James Hicks secured their win with a tricky looking 5-11, 12-10, 12-10, 5-11,11-5 victory over Simon Jarvis. There was nothing in it in the game between Rob Shrimpton and Steve Kerns and Kerns finally edged  a “marathon encounter”  9-11, 11-9, 12-10, 10-12, 12-10.

Danbury D stay second in division two and they did well to beat fourth placed Chelmsford C 7-3. Sam Lowman and Dan Anderson both stayed undefeated. Dan Anderson impressed here. He beat Christian Barnado 11-9, 11-7, 7-11, 8-11, 11-9 and Mike Johnston 9-11, 12-10, 11-7, 13-11 and he rounded off  an excellent evening’s work by beating Wiktor Delimat 11-7, 11-9, 9-11, 10-12, 11-8. OCs B - strong favourites for the title a few weeks ago have hit a sticky patch. Kevin Worthington won his three singles against Danbury C but it wasn‘t enough and Danbury C ran out 6-4 winners. OCs reserve - Dave Porter scored an excellent 7-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-9, 11-7 win over Neil Want. OCs C did well to beat Writtle C 6-4 - good going as Gary Ward was unbeaten for the Writtle side. Charles Yeung impressed for OCs C  as he beat Dave Calleja 6-11, 15-13, 11-3, 11-9.

OCs D are undefeated in division three having notched up 12 wins and three draws to date. Mick Richardson led the way as they beat Danbury F 7-3 and he got them off to a winning start by beating Dave Marsh 7-11, 15-17, 11-7, 11-9, 11-7. Chelmsford D are second and they also won 7-3. Connor Payne was undefeated against Danbury H. He had to dig deep against Dave Hancox to preserve his unbeaten record for the evening and he finally won 6-11, 4-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-9. Third placed Writtle D beat Danbury G 8-2. Trevor Collin and Peter Layzell were both unbeaten. Dave Carter had quite a battle against Tony Forster before missing out 11-3, 21-23, 2-11, 10-12. Richard Upson won his three singles as OCs E beat Writtle E 7-3 whilst Bob Francis was undefeated as OCs F drew 5-5 with Maldon D. Francis secured the draw for OCs in the last game by beating Mervyn Perriman 7-11, 11-8, 10-12, 11-5, 11-7.

Danbury J - runaway leaders in division four made it 15 wins out of 15 bybeating Highwood A 9-1. Rob Kneale and Dave Powell were both undefeated. Powell retained his 100 % record, but by “the skin of his teeth !”. Melanie Bonnett pushed him all the way before succumbing 12-10, 4-11, 5-11, 11-6, 10-12.Melanie Bonnet also beat Dave Goody 11-6, 11-8 11-7. Six games were decided in the fifth end in the match between Hatfield Peverel C and Chelmsford F but it was Hatfield Peverel C who ran out 8-2 winners. Paul Mulley fared best. Charlie Craig missed out to Andy Swales (11-2, 5-11, 8-11, 8-11) but he scored a fine 11-13, 11-6, 11-8, 12-10 win over Sarah Austin. Knock-Out Cups Update

The Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League’s Knock-Out Cups  remain very popular and the fact that divisions two, three, four and five have their own Cup events certainly adds to that popularity. OCs C (Gareth Joice, Mick Richardson and David Porter) were shock 5-4 winners over high-flying Danbury D in the first round of the division two Knock Out Cup. This victory owed a lot to their prowess in the doubles. They won all three doubles and Mick Richardson and David Porter sealed the victory in the last game with a strangely fluctuating 11-13, 11-1, 13-11, 11-3 win over Sam Lowman and Cameron Gray. Danbury’s Sam Lowman and Dan Anderson must have been left wondering what had hit them as they won all four of their singles. OCs C followed this up with a 5-1 win over Hatfield Peverel. Mick Richardson impressed by beating Neil Freeman 11-9, 11-7, 4-11, 12-10. Writtle C (Gary Ward, Dave Calleja and John Parodi) ran out 5-0 winners against Danbury E. John Parodi defeated Gordon Gatheral 9-11, 16-14, 3-11, 11-7, 11-7.

Gareth Joice and Mick Richardson (OCs D) were in action again in the division three Knock Out Cup but this time they were on the wrong end of a 5-4 defeat to Danbury H. Allan Steel played his part with a 11-7, 12-10, 11-9 win over Mick Richardson and a 11-2, 11-8, 13-11 victory over Gareth Joice. With the scores poised at 4-4 Allan Steel and Luca Bailey came though in five ends against Mick Richardson and Mick Hayes (5-11, 11-4, 11-8, 8-11, 11-4). Three matches resulted in 5-0 results. Danbury G ran out 5-0 winners against Chelmsford D. Peter Hance, Nicky Reece Ford and Maurice Hardy carried all before them. Hance played his part with a 11-8, 8-11, 11-7, 8-11, 11-2 win over Connor Payne. Writtle D also won 5-0. Trevor Collin,  Dave Carter and Colin Barham gave nothing away against Highwood A.  OCs  B (Richard Baxter, Richard Upson and David Newman) defeated OCs C. David Newman’s win over Russell Hall (11-9, 9-11, 1-12, 11-5, 11-2) meant there was no way back for OCs C.

Chelmsford F, Writtle F and OCs A are all through to the second round of the division four Knock Out Cup. OCs A had to battle hard to beat Highwood A 5-3. They trailed 3-2 but fought back to win. David Bishop sealed the victory with a 7-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-9 win over Nicola Pippen having previously defeated Keith Fitz-John 11-2, 11-8, 11-9. Writtle F (David Meah /  Brian Steward / Colin Griffiths) beat Highwood B 5-0. Brian Steward had to dig deep to beat Frank Neill (7-11, 11-5, 11-6, 8-11, 11-8). Chelmsford E beat Chelmsford F 5-2. Jon Dyson, Dusan Doszkoty and Martin Hiskey all played their part in this success. Dusan Doszkoty won twice. He beat Vinni Kamma (11-9, 11-9, 4-11, 11-13, 11-5) and Jason Clark (11-7, 11-6, 11-7).

A strong Chelmsford A ran out 8-0 winners against Danbury Demons in the Junior Knock Out Cup. Harry Buckle, James Donald and Vineeth Kamma were all on good form. James Donald, one of the stars of the M&G Investments Chelmsford Championships looks to be one for the future and his impressive showing where he won the Under 14 Singles and reached the final of the Under 16 Singles certainly marks him out as one to watch.

The Handicap Knock Out Cup remains the best supported Cup in the League‘s programme . It is only the first division teams - often heavily committed to League matches in other Leagues who give it a wide berth. OCs B - that very “busy” side of Gareth Joice, Mick Richardson and David Porter again, ran out 5-2 winners over Chelmsford F. Mick Richardson (handicap of 61) beat Adi Kamma (handicap of 49) narrowly 23-21, 22-20 to seal the OCs victory. Chelmsford G (Ian Austin, Andy Swales and Sarah Austin) ran out 5-1 winners over OCs A. Ian Austin (handicap of 49|) beat Dan Berry (handicap of 68) 19-21, 21-13, 21-18 to ensure Chelmsford went through to the next round. Danbury H (Eamon Hall supported by up and coming Juniors - Ben Porter and Sam Mortimer-Ford) were quick-fire 6-0 winners over Highwood B. Ben Porter (handicap of 43) stormed though his two singles - (21-5, 21-9) against Martin Goddard (handicap of 52) and against Russell Downton (21-6, 21-6) (handicap of 53). He has clearly outgrown his Handicap already.

Reigning first division Champions Maldon A faced a strong Rawreth A side in division 1(A) fielding 2019 M&G Investments Chelmsford Mens Doubles Champions Liam Squirrell and Reece Seddon. Alex Abbott who missed this year’s Championships was the Maldon leading light and with 12 wins out of 12 Abbott remains undefeated in the second half of the Season. Reece Seddon scored fine wins over Paul Sayer (11-9, 11-4, 7-11, 11-3) and Trevor Lloyd (5-11, 13-11, 11-8, 11-8) and the Seddon / Liam Squirell doubles pairing - so impressive in the Closed Championships scored another fine win. This time they beat Lloyd / Abbott 6-11, 12-10, 11-5, 11-7.  7-3 to the Champions elect, another strong performance from the leading side in the League.

Danbury B turned in an excellent performance in division 1 (B).  Gus Heath andIan Whiteside starred as they beat Chelmsford B 7-3. Ace defender Ian Whitesidewas on dominant form with three convincing wins. He beat Victor Chan (11-6, 11-3, 11-4), Rob Shrimpton (11-3, 3-11, 11-3, 11-3) and Keith Martin (11-4, 11-3,13-11).

In division two OCs C impressed by beating Maldon C 7-3. Tom Barker was the difference between  the two teams. He defeated Dawn Baldry (7-11, 11-8, 11-6, 11-9), John Holland (15-13. 6-11, 11-6, 11-4) and Ev Lucas (14-12, 11-6, 11-5).

Hatfield Peverel D (Keith Flowers, Martin Archie and Nick Duce) gave nothing away against Highwood A in division four. 10-0 to Hatfield Peverel D. It looked as if Highwood were going to get off the mark in the last game when Melanie Bonnett led Keith Flowers 2-0 but Keith fought back strongly. He won 10-12, 7-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-7.

Second-placed Chelmsford G ran out 9-1 winners against OCs H in division five. Ian Austin and Andy Swales were both undefeated. Stuart Wintle was on target for the losers with a hard-fought 11-7, 11-8, 14-16, 8-11, 11-6 win over Sarah Austin. The leaders - Galleywood C won 8-2. Gary Copsey and Aidan Noguchi were both undefeated.

Chelmsford Cougars beat Chelmsford Jaguars 5-0 in division 2A of the CLICK League. James Donald and Harry Chivers were both undefeated although they both had to fight against 2019 M&G Investments Chelmsford Junior Girls Singles Champion Nyree Marsh. Chivers came through in five ends (11-8, 4-11, 13-15, 11-5, 11-8) whilst James Donald also required five ends before he pulled away to win 11-6, 12-14, 11-6, 9-11, 11-2. Chelmsford Pumas (Joachim Mapes and Saul Chivers) beat Chelmsford Tigers 3-2. Good going as Cameron Waite was unbeaten for the Tigers.

CLICK division 2 B produced two 3-2 scorelines. Buttsbury Bears led by an undefeated Harry Hutt beat Buttsbury Badgers. The match between Ben Brown and Harry Hutt was one of the closest on record with Hutt shading it 4-11,13-11, 11-17, 9-11, 20-18. Quite a battle. Chelmsford Rhinos (Ben Chivers and Dan Wise) edged it against Buttsbury Bulldogs although they both missed out against Max Samuels.

Buttsbury Beavers were 5-0 winners in CLICK division 2 C against Chelmsford Wildcats. George Hagland and Oliver Barrett were both undefeated. The match between Emilie Gilloux and Oliver Barrett was a close one with Oliver shading it 11-8, 11-9, 11-13, 12-10. The Wildcats did better against Chelmsford Eagles winning 3-2. Emilie Gilloux and Alesha Ellis-Austin both won once to counter the two wins picked up by James Killeen. Buttsbury Beavers shaded it 3-2 against Buttsbury Bats. Leo Beadon won his two singles beating Zachary Samuels 11-2, 11-4, 11-6 and Leo Comer 11-6, 11-4, 8-11, 11-4.

First M&G Investments Chelmsford Mens Singles title for Ugur Saglik

19 year old Ugur Saglik, many people’s favourite - is the 2019 M&G Investments Chelmsford Mens Singles Champion and he took the title with five game wins over David Cole in his Semi-Final and  against Wale Bada in the Final at the Old Chelmsfordians Club on Monday 11 February 2019 played in front of a sizeable crowd.

His Mens Singles Semi-Final against David Cole was one of the most dramatic on record with Cole showing that he is still a match for everyone despite playing in division two. David Cole edged a tight first end 11-9 but Ugur hit back taking the second end 11-5. Ugur was playing well and when he led 10-6 in the third end it appeared as if he was on the way to victory. David Cole had other ideas and he sneaked home 14-12. David’s “dander” was well and truly up and he proceeded to dominate the  fourth end. 8-4 ….. 9-4 … 10-4 it certainly looked as if David was on his way to victory. Amazingly it was Ugur who hit back and by going for his shots when many players would be happy just to get the ball back in play he fought back and edged the game 12-10. Two successive games won by the “wrong player” .The advantage was now surely with Ugur. But no David led 7-4 in the decider. A magnificent recovery in the circumstances. However, Ugur was far from finished and he surged back to 8-8 and he finally won a  truly marvellous match 11-8. Game to Ugur 9-11, 11-5, 12-14, 12-10, 11-8.

Wale Bada came through his Semi-Final against “surprise package” Steve Whiteley in four ends. Wale “digs” the ball hard with his backhand push and it is difficult for the opponent to open up cleanly against him. He combines that with a deadly forehand drive. Although Steve dominated the third end with some controlled hitting it was Wale who pulled away in the fourth end for a 11-9, 11-6, 6-11, 11-3 victory.

Lin Roff / Gary Young are the 2019 Mixed Doubles Champions. They won the first end 11-6 against Jan Fuller / Wale Bada but after that there was never anything in it at all. Both the second and third ends could have gone either way but it was Lin / Gary who shaded them 11-9, 13-11.

Ugur Saglik won the Under 21 Singles title as expected but although he raced away with the first end against Daniel Young 11-3 it was Daniel who started the faster in games two and three. There was never a lot in it the second and third ends before Ugur secured his 11-3, 11-8, 12-10 victory. A fine showing from the Underdog - one of the most improved players in the County.

The Veterans Singles Final also went to five ends. And there was never a lot to choose between Wale Bada and Trevor Lloyd. Trevor Lloyd creates very acute angles with his clever placement whilst Wale Bada is a combination of heavy pushed returns, punishing forehands and when he gets driven away from the Table he favours a chopped ball. Wale raced into a 2-0 lead but Trevor hit back and it was anyone’s game in the decider. Wale eventually won  a fascinating contest 11-8, 11-8, 9-11, 9-11, 13-11.

There is a new set of names on the Mens Doubles trophy - the young pretenders - Liam Squirrell and Reece Seddon. They looked well drilled and “tidy” throughout and when their opponents David Cole and Gary Cattermole hit top form in the third end they responded with some ferocious hits of their own. The third end was a terrific encounter. Liam and Reece edged an explosive match 11-8, 11-7, 12-10.

So to the Mens Singles Final. Ugur raced into a 8-2 lead in the first end but he lost his way and Wale shaded it 11-9. Worse was to come for Ugur as he fell away in the second end as well as Wale won 11-7. Ugur was in big trouble but he showed very good composure, plenty of confidence to continue to go for his shots as well as no shortage of match winning shots as he fought back over the next three ends. Ugur eventually won 9-11, 7-11, 11-6, 11-7, 11-4 to be crowned the 2019 M&G Investments Chelmsford Mens Singles Champion.

Special guests included the Mayor of Chelmsford, Councillor Yvonne Spence, The Mayor's Consort, Mr John Spence, Geoff Curd - Marketing Manager of M&G Direct Marketing, Ken Field (Essex County Table Tennis Chairman) and Jayne Johnson (Essex County Table Tennis Association General Secretary).

Steve Whiteley produces the shock of the weekend

The preliminary weekend of the M&G Investments Chelmsford & District Table Tennis Championships played at Hylands School produced no shortage of shocks as well as some superb play.

With top seed Duncan Taylor having to withdraw from the Mens Singles through injury the top quarter took on a very open look and it was 67 years old Steve Whiteley who took full advantage. Mens Singles Champion in 1974 and 1975 and absent from the Sport for 31 years Whiteley has been playing again for five years. He produced the finest moment of his comeback. Steve Whiteley impressed by beating Peter Barrett 11-3, 14-12, 11-8 and then in what was a real shock the seeded Paul Davison 2-11, 11-9, 17-15, 5-11, 11-8. Davison had also impressed by defeating Scott Dowsett 11-8, 11-9, 11-8. In his Quarter Final Whiteley faced Robert Shrimpton who had ousted Ciaran Whelan 11-9, 8-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-5. A thrilling match went “to the wire” and it was Whiteley who emerged victorious 5-11, 6-11, 12-10, 11-3, 14-12. Whiteley will meet Wale Bada in his Semi-Final on Finals Night an amazing 44 years after he last won the title.

Lee McHugh, a shock winner over Paul Lucas in his group, ousted Daniel Young 7-11, 11-8, 11-4, 10-12, 11-6 after Daniel Young had beaten Gary Cattermole 11-8, 12-10,11-8.  McHugh pushed Bada to the brink in his Quarter-Final before Bada came through a nail biting fourth end and a tense decider. Bada won 11-6, 8-11, 8-11, 15-13, 11-7. In the third quarter it was David Cole who prevailed. Eyebrows were raised that the four times Champion wasn‘t seeded in the top eight and he seemingly had a point to prove. Cole beat David Gatheral 11-6, 11-7, 11-6 and then with a superb display he defeated last year‘s runner-up Trevor Lloyd 11-3, 11-6, 11-7 - the most powerful showing of the weekend. Cole had to battle hard to defeat top notch newcomer 19 year-old Liam Squirrell 11-7, 10-12, 11-8, 14-12 in the Quarter Final. Squirrell had made his mark by beating Charles Sweeny 11-7, 12-14, 11-5, 11-2 and Reece Seddon 11-8, 11-7, 7-11, 11-7. Cole will face Ugur Saglik - many people’s favourite to win the title. Saglik had a tough examination in the second round. Paul Lucas - a victim of not winning his group had to face a  top seed much earlier than expected. Saglik was pushed hard - very hard before he won 13-11, 13-11, 15-13 and in his Quarter-Final Saglik turned on the style by beating Gary Young 11-6, 11-6, 11-8. Young had also impressed by defeating Casey Cross 5-11, 11-8, 11-8, 9-11, 11-9 and Wudong Liu 11-8, 11-8, 11-7. Other results of interest had included a fine Group win for Daniel Young who beat Casey Cross (3-1), Simon Jarvis (3-1) and Daniel Anderson (3-0). Victor Chan scored  a superb 11-9, 11-5, 10-12, 13-11 victory over Paul Davison but it was Paul who went through as Group winner as Victor lost 8-11, 9-11, 11-6, 8-11 to Gareth Joice. Wudong Liu also excelled and he defeated Scott Dowsett 11-6, 14-12, 6-11, 11-8. No shortage of upsets in this event !.

The new M&G Investments Chelmsford Ladies Singles Champion is Tulay Dundar. Tulay fought her way through to the Final with wins over Nyree Marsh (11-2, 11-7, 11-5) and Lin Roff (11-6, 11-7, 14-12). In the top half of the draw top seed Julie Johnson defeated the improving Sarah Austin 12-10, 10-12, 11-9, 11-7 but she met her match in the Semi-Final against old rival Jan Fuller who prevailed in five hard fought ends (11-8, 7-11, 8-11,  11-7, 11-7). Tulay - a newcomer to the League had not been aware that the League hold a separate Finals Night. Jan therefore had every right to claim the title by default but with great magnamity she agreed to play the Final. However it was Tulay who dominated and she ran out a comfortable 11-6, 11-0, 11-6 winner.

The Mens Doubles Final will be between David Cole / Gary Cattermole and Liam Squirrell / Reece Seddon. Cole / Cattermole dominated the top half of the draw with wins over Simon Jarvis / Robert Shrimpton 11-6, 11-9, 11-3 and then the seeded Trevor Lloyd / Casey Cross 11-6, 11-3, 5-11, 11-9 and they beat Paul Davison / Steve Kerns 11-7,11-8, 11-8 in the Semi-Final.  In the bottom half Liam Squirrell / Reece Seddon impressed by beating the third seeded Paul Lucas / Scott Dowsett 7-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-8 and they beat the second seeds Ugur Saglik / Wale Bada 11-8, 11-8, 11-7 with a top class display in the Semi-Final. Both pairs look well drilled and David Cole will be bidding to win the title with a fifth different  partner having previously been successful with Rik James (seven times), brother Martin, Mathew Staines and John Holland.

Jan Fuller / Julie Johnson won the Ladies Double title for the third year in a row but they were pushed to the brink. The Press Officer had suggested that they were in a class of their own. Clearly Lin Roff / Sarah Austin hadn’t read the script. With the scores poised at 2-2 Lin / Sarah surged ahead to 8-1 in the fifth end. Surely there was going to be a new pairing on the trophy ? The answer was “no” and it was Julie / Jan who levelled at 9-9 and they finally won a fantastic match 3-11, 11-5, 7-11, 11-6, 13-11.

The Mixed Doubles saw a lot of reshuffling of partners and the Final will be between Gary Young / Lin Roff and Wal Bada and Jan Fuller. Jan / Wal beat Scott Dowsett / Julie Johnson 11-9, 11-6, 11-9 in their Semi-Final although they had been pushed to the brink a round earlier. Wudong Liu and Nyree Marsh held a match point in the fourth end before they finally succumbed 11-9, 1-11, 11-9, 10-12, 5-11. A fantastic effort from the under-dogs. Gary Young / Lin Roff booked their Finals Night appearance by beating Steve Whiteley / Dawn Baldry 11-8, 8-11, 11-9, 11-6.

The Under 21 Singles Final will be between the favourite Ugur Saglik and Daniel Young. Considering how well Liam Squirrel played in the Mens events you have got to credit Daniel Young for beating him here and Daniel came through in four ends 11-7, 6-11, 11-8, 11-9 - a superb performance. This event was marred by walk-overs and for many players it proved to be one event too many.

The Veterans events were dominated by Trevor Lloyd. His real test came in the Over 40s Singles where he battled his way to the Final with wins over Robin Armstrong (9-11, 11-4,11-5, 11-8) , Eric Green (11-5, 13-11, 11-9) and in a furious and tense Semi-Final - Gary Young 12-10, 9-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-7. Young had beaten David Cole 11-8, 11-5, 5-11, 5-11, 11-5 after trailing 5-2 in the fifth end at the change of ends. Lloyd will face Wal Bada in the Final. The hard hitting Bada had beaten Peter Barrett 3-11, 11-5, 11-9, 11-9 and then Paul Davison 5-11, 12-10, 11-7, 10-12, 11-7 and he saw off Tulay Dundar 11-5, 11-5, 11-7 in his Semi-Final. Tulay beat Victor Chan 11-5, 11-6, 11-6 and Wudong Liu 2-11, 12-10, 11-5, 11-4 to fight her way through to the last four.

The 2019 Veterans Doubles winners are Wal Bada / Trevor Lloyd. They had to pull out all the stops to beat David Cole / Gary Cattermole 11-3, 8-11, 11-5, 11-13, 12-10 in a thrilling Semi-Final and they defeated Gary Young / Paul Davison 11-6, 9-11, 11-8, 11-17 in the Final.

Trevor Lloyd annexed the Over 50s Singles without dropping an end. He raced to wins over David Parker (11-6, 11-3,11-4), Gareth Joice (11-2, 11-8, 11-9), Julie Johnson (11-5, 11-3, 11-2) and in the Final - yes you’ve guessed - Steve Whiteley 11-5, 11-5, 11-6. Whiteley had to battle hard to see of Colin Napper (12-10, 11-4, 10-12, 12-10), Steve Kerns (6-11, 10-12, 11-6, 11-8, 11-7) and Eric Green (9-11, 11-3, 11-5, 13-11).

There was another Trevor Lloyd “master-class” in the Over 60s Singles and Lloyd again won the event with a series of straight set wins. He beat Lin Roff (11-5, 11-1, 11-5), Steve Whiteley (11-9, 11-6, 11-8) and in the Final - Eric Green (11-2, 11-6, 11-9).

Daniel Young dominated the Junior events as expected. In the Junior Boys he fought his way to the Final without dropping an end with 3-0 wins over Joachin Mapes, Ben Porter and Sam Mortimer-Ford and he beat Thomas Page 11-6, 11-8, 12-10 in the Final. Thomas Page saw off the challenges of Jensen Davis (11-7, 11-4, 11-7), Luca Bailey (11-6, 11-9, 11-8) and Harry Buckle 11-7, 11-7, 10-12, 11-5 to battle his way to the Final.

It was Daniel Young who emerged victorious in the Under 16 Singles as well. He beat Saul Chivers (11-3, 11-2, 11-4) and then Ben Porter after a real struggle 11-4, 7-11, 11-5, 15-13 and Thomas Page 11-5, 11-9, 11-4. He beat James Donald 11-8, 11-6, 11-6 in the Final. James Donald booked his Final appearance only after a last gasp win over Luca Bailey 10-12, 11-8, 14-12, 4-11, 11-9 in a really hard fought Semi-Final.  Donald had battled his way past Harry Buckle 13-15, 11-4, 11-6, 3-11, 11-5 a round earlier.

James Donald impressed again in the Under 14 Singles. From the no. three seeded spot he beat Aidan Turner (3-0), Cleon Fernandez (3-0) and second seed Ben Porter |(11-7, 6-11, 11-5, 14-12) and in the Final he secured victory with a widely fluctuating 8-11, 11-3, 11-6, 6-11, 11-1 win over Ewan Hynd. In his Semi-Final Ewan Hynd beat Sudheep Kamma 11-3, 1-13, 11-6 having previously enjoyed 3-0 wins over Ben Chivers and Joshua Bickles.

Nyree Marsh - so close to causing a sensation in the Mixed Doubles is the 2019 Junior Girls Singles Champion.  She beat Annabel Sweeney 11-7, 11-9, 3-11, 6-11, 11-8 in the Final having beaten Melinda Abraham Victor 11-4, 11-3, 11-9 a round earlier. Annabel defeated Aleshia Ellis-Austin 11-7, 11-6, 12-10 at the same stage.

The Daniel Young / Aidan Noguchi pairing “walked tall” in the Junior Doubles and they powered their way to the title with wins over Nyree Marsh / James Donald 11-8, 11-8, 11-7, Luca Bailey / Vineeth Kamma 11-4, 11-7, 11-6 and in the Final Ben Porter / Sam  Mortimer-Ford  11-2, 11-3,11-7. Ben Porter / Sam Mortimer-Ford came through their semi-Final 11-8, 11-8, 11-4 against Joachin Mapes / Saul Chivers.  In the closest match of the event Mapes / Chivers had seen off Noah Sage / Oliver Wylie 8-11, 11-6, 11-3, 6-11, 11-9.

The Junior Handicap Singles Final was played at the weekend although the earlier rounds had been played at Melbourne Stadium a week earlier. It was James Donald who emerged victorious 11-8, 7-11, 12-10, 9-11, 11-8 against  Noah Sage in a Final which was played off scratch. Noah Sage battled his way through to the Final with wins over Isabella Borgia, Harry Buckle, Annabel Sweeney, and Alan Jiang whilst James Donald left Dion Fernandes, Melinda Abraham-Victor, Sam Mortimer-Ford and Cleon Fernandes trailing in his march to the Final.

Sunday’s play was dominated by the Divisional Singles and it was top seed Ciaran Whelan who won the Division two title. He was tested by Dan Anderson where he won 11-5, 5-11, 11-4, 12-10 and the much improved Charles Yeung where he prevailed 7-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-9, 11-8. He shut down Trevor Collin 11-8, 11-8, 11-5 in the Final. The hard hitting Trevor Collin had excelled to win three tough five enders beating Steve Scholz (7-11, 11-6, 11-7, 8-11, 11-4) and Wiktor Delimat (2-11, 11-7, 11-5, 9-11, 11-9) and finally Neil Freeman (8-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-6, 11-6). A superb run.

Trevor Collin was favourite for the Division three singles and he reached the Semi-Final stage where he met his match in Nick Duce who beat him 11-4, 4-11, 11-7, 11-8. It was Thomas Page, the runner-up in the Junior Boys Singles on the Saturday who prevailed in the Final. Page ran out a 11-9, 11-5, 8-11, 11-7 winner over Duce having defeated Mervyn Perriman 11-8, 5-11, 12-10, 11-7 in the penultimate round.

Nick Duce was the strong favourite for the Division four singles title and he didn’t disappoint. He cruised to the title with wins over Adi Kamma (11-5, 11-17, 11-2), Andy Swales (11-5, 11-7, 11-6) and Mark Glenister (11-4, 11-6, 11-4). He looked in control throughout. Glenister booked his Final appearance by beating Denis Crapnell 11-7, 13-11, 11-7.

Mark Glenister also made it through to the Final of the Division five singles but this time he met his match in Denis Crapnell. It was Crapnell who dominated and he won 11-9, 11-8, 6-11, 11-6. Crapnell beat Jamie Dowsett 11-5, 11-5, 11-5 in Semi Final whilst Mark Glenister ousted Andy Swales 11-5, 8-11, 11-6, 11-9.

The Handicap Singles was last won by a first Division player in 1997 - one Steve Kerns - forgive me for mentioning that !. Liam Squirrell set about putting that record right with relish and he powered his past Simon Jarvis (21-13,  21-16), Steve Whiteley (21-13, 21-9),Vineeth Kamma (22-20, 21-17) and Ciaran Whelan (21-15, 18-21, 21-15). He met Luca Bailey in the Final after Bailey had battled his way past Charles Yeung (21-14, 22-20), Thomas Page (15-21, 28-26, 21-18) Mark Glenister (21-8, 21-18), Gareth Joice (21-14, 16-2, 21-10) and Neil Freeman (21-13, 21-12). The Final was a thriller with Squirrel easing through the first end 21-12. He looked in control and at 20-16 in the second end everyone assumed that it was his title for the taking. Luca Bailey had other ideas and playing superbly he matched Squirrell’s power and guile with his own class. He amazingly edged the game 23-21 and he matched his opponent all the way in a brilliant deciding leg before succumbing 26-24. The best Handicap Singles Final for many a year. And a first Chelmsford title for Liam Squirell.

Luca Bailey didn’t leave empty handed and paired with Vineeth Kamma they turned in a sparkling display to win the Handicap Doubles. Their Final opponents - Wiktor Delimat / Dan Anderson put up a fine showing but despite taking the match to a third end their younger opponents showed no sign of being denied. Luc and Vineeth powered to a 11-7, 18-21, 21-8 victory.

Press Report Issued 27 January 2019

Fantastic hat-trick from John Poysden

The match was a personal triumph for 2012 and 2013 M&G Investments Chelmsford Mens Singles Champion Alex Abbott who was on sparkling form and he won his three singles. This included inflicting a first defeat on Ugur Saglik (the League’s highest ranked player) who Abbott beat 10-12, 11-5, 7-11, 11-7, 11-6 in the opening encounter. Abbott went on to beat Wal Bada 11-2, 11-6, 11-4 and Casey Cross 11-7, 11-9, 11-1. Casey Cross made his mark with a fine 11-7, 12-10, 11-8 victory over Trevor Lloyd whilst Colin Stallwood impressed with a 12-10, 6-11, 11-9, 11-7 success against Casey Cross. At one stage it looked as if Maldon were going to run away with the match as they surged into a 4-0 lead. However, Chelmsford had other ideas and they pulled back to 4-4 and a draw seems like a fair result. Writtle A drew 5-5 with Writtle B - a reasonable effort considering they were a player short. Lee McHugh led the way with a hat-trick which included a hard-fought 11-9, 12-14, 12-14, 11-7, 11-7 win over Peter Barrett. Danbury A ran out 7-3 winners over OCs A. Paul Lucas was undefeated for the Old Chelmsfordians whilst Eric Green, Steve Whitely and Dave Richardson all bagged two wins for Danbury A. Lucas had to dig deep to defeat Eric Green and he pulled through to win 5-11, 3-11, 12-10, 11-6, 11-6.

There was a third defeat for Maldon C in division two and they drop back to third. They lost 6-4 to Danbury D for whom Simon Lowman scored a fine hat-trick. This included an excellent 11-7, 10-12, 8-11, 12-10, 11-9 win over Ciaran Whelan. This was Lowman’s fourth successive “full-house“. Lowman  looks well worth a first division place next year. Writtle C ran out 7-3 winners against Maldon C. Gary Ward led the way with three wins. Team-work was the order of the day for Danbury C who overcame OCs C 7-3. Tim Cramphorn, Neil Wantand Allan Steel all won twice although none of them could overcome Frank Hodge. Tim Cramphorn beat Tom Barker 11-9, 11-1, 9-11, 9-11, 12-10 in the closest game of the night.

Chelmsford D lead the division three table by one point after 10 matches. Keith Martin and Jarek Pietraszuk were both undefeated as they beat OCs F 7-3. John Watts beat Dave Parker 11-5, 7-11, 3-11, 12-10, 11-9 in the closest game of the night. OCs D are only one point adrift in second place but they were held to a draw by Danbury H. Mick Richardson was unbeaten for OCs whilst Allan Steel picked up  two wins for the Danbury side. Danbury F did well to beat OCs E 8-2. Dave Marsh and Richard Gardiner both won their three singles. Marsh hit top form as he disposed of Richard Baxter 11-6,11-7, 11-4. League stalwart Tom Elder was on top form for Maldon D who drew 5-5 with Danbury G. Elder completed his hat-trick of wins by defeating Richard Allen 11-5, 7-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-9. Elder also came through in three close ends against Mo Hardy (11-9, 11-9, 12-10).  Writtle D with Trevor Collin firing on all cylinders beat Writtle E 7-3. Another League stalwart Malcolm Storey fared best of the Writtle E players.

All players will be deeply saddened by the death last week in a Brentwood League match of popular and well respected Writtle E player Steve Siggs. An obituary will follow.

Runaway leaders Danbury J made it 10 wins out of 10 in division four. All four of their regular players have fared well and this is supported by the Individual averages. Dave Oxley-Goody (74 %), Richard Allen (55 %), Dave Powell (100 %) and Robert Kneale (76 %) have all impressed.  With Richard Allen and Dave Powell winning their six singles Danbury J beat OCs G 8-2. Sue Hickman impressed for the losers with a fine 11-7, 11-8, 10-12, 6-11, 11-7 victory over Dave Oxley-Goody.  Danbury K were involved in two matches. With Denis Balic and Roger Tiffin staying undefeated they beat Highwood A 7-3. Roger Tiffin came through in five ends against Melanie Bonnett 11-8, 14-16, 11-4, 7-11, 11-7. Danbury K also lost 6-4 to Chelmsford F. Adi Kamma won his three singles for the Chelmsford side and he had to pull out all the stops to get the better of Denis Balic 8-11, 6-11, 16-14, 11-4, 11-8. That third game was crucial !.

Galleywood C moved back into pole position in division five. Gary Copsey, Charlie Craig and Aidan Noguchi ran put 10-0 winners against Hatfield Peverel D. OCs H were also comfortable winners and they beat Chelmsford J 8-2. Suzanne Shaw and Michael Lucey were both undefeated. Suzanne Shaw completed an excellent evening‘s work by beating Jacqui Smith 4-11, 11-6, 11-13, 11-8, 11-9. Second-placed Chelmsford G led by a hat-trick by Ian Austin defeated Chelmsford J 6-4. Paul Bullock and Rev Matthews both won twice for Chelmsford J. Rev Matthews beat Andy Swales 3-11, 8-11, 11-3, 13-11, 11-9 in the closest game of the night.

And a final reminder - all players are again requested to note that the closing date for entry to the M&G Investments Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League Closed Tournament (which will be held over the weekend of 1, 2 & 3 February 2019), is this coming Friday (14 December 2018). Danbury B off the mark with impressive 7-3 victory

Danbury B scored their first win of the Season in the first division of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League and their 7-3 victory over Hatfield Peverel A takes them out of the bottom two. With Gus Heath, Steve Buer and Chris Buer all winning twice they raced in to a 7-0 lead as nothing went Hatfield Peverel’s way-literally nothing at all !. In game number eight Alastair Piper finally secured  a win for Hatfield Peverel with a decisive 11-4, 11-8, 11-8 victory over Steve Buer and Julie Johnson and Scott Dowsett also picked up wins to give the score a degree of respectability. Liberal ran out 8-2 winners over Writtle B after a Paul Davison hat-trick fashioned their triumph. Phil Smith impressed for the losers by beating Steve Pennell (11-7, 11-8, 7-11, 15-13) and Andrew Huckson (11-7, 9-11,12-10, 7-11, 11-7). Two excellent victories !. Writtle A with Duncan Taylor and Lee McHugh firing on all cylinders ran out 9-1 winners against Chelmsford B. 2018 M&G Investments Chelmsford Mens Singles Champion Duncan Taylor was several classes apart. He beat Victor Chan (11-6, 11-5, 11-8), Simon Jarvis (11-2, 11-3, 11-4) and Rob Shrimpton (11-4, 11-6, 11-6),

Chelmsford C were impressive 7-3 winners over Maldon C in division two. They are now tied with Maldon B on 57 points in second place. Waseem Qureshi has hit  a rich vein of form and he led the way with a hat-trick of wins. This included a last gasp 7-11, 12-10, 11-7, 8-11, 11-9 win over John Holland. OCs B stay top but they could only muster two players against Danbury E and had to settle for a 6-4 win. Kevin Worthington won his three singles whilst David Gatheral was on target for the losers with a 11-3, 11-8, 9-11, 4-11, 11-9 victory over Trevor Carter. Danbury D ran out 6-4 winners against Danbury C after Sam Lowman had remained undefeated. Lowman was successful against Neil Want - the best of the Danbury C players - 11-8, 11-5, 9-11, 11-6. The match between Maldon B and Writtle C finished tied at 5-5. No one player dominated and Maldon’s Hamish Innes and Colin Napper and Writtle’s Gary Ward all won twice. Writtle’s John Gagg secured a fine 11-9, 11-2, 10-12, 11-6 win over Ciaran Whelan. It was honours even between OCs C and Hatfield Peverel B as well. Neil Freeman was undefeated for Hatfield Peverel and he completed his trio of wins with a 12-10, 11-7, 11-8 success against Frank Hodge. There was little to separate Charles Yeung and Guy McKenzie with Yeung eventually nicking it 3-11, 12-10, 10-12, 11-8, 12-10.

Division three leaders OCs D scored their seventh win of the Season with a 8-2 victory over Danbury G. Gareth Joice led the way with three wins and Mick Richardson and David Porter provided excellent support with two victories apiece. Peter Hance dented Mick Richardson’s record with a 11-2, 12-10, 4-11, 9-11, 11-9 win. Solid team-work in the shape of two wins for Luca Bailey, Eamon Hall and Allan Steel meant Danbury H beat OCs E 7-3. Richard Baxter was undefeated for OCs E but he had to fight back from 9-5 down in the decider to get the better of Allan Steel. He took the last six points to triumph 12-10, 9-11, 3-11, 11-6, 11-9. Nat Ravlic looked to be on his way to a 3-0 win over Eamon Hall and he led by two games to nil and by 10-5. How often is that last point the trickiest one to annexe ?. Sure enough Hall found his groove and he came through to win 7-11, 14-16, 12-10, 11-9, 11-5. Maldon D did well to draw 5-5 with Writtle D. Good going as Peter Layzell was undefeated for Writtle. Ashton Parker was unbeaten for the Old Chelmsfordians side. He pulled clear in the fifth end to defeat Dave Marsh 11-9, 10-12, 12-10, 4-11, 11-3.

Danbury J are looking good in division four and they made it nine straight wins by beating Hatfield Peverel C 7-3. Colin Blore led the way with a hat-trick and Will Goodchild won twice to support him. Amanda Hogger was the best of the Chelmsford players with two wins.

There was a set-back for second placed Galleywood C in division five. They were beaten 7-3 by Maldon E. Garry Eames and Denis Crapnell were both undefeated. Garry Eames had to work hard for his three wins. He beat Aidan Noguchi (11-9, 6-11, 7-11, 11-8, 11-4), Charlie Craig (12-10, 8-11, 11-7, 11-4) and he defeated Mark Glenister in a real thriller (8-11, 9-11, 11-7, 11-9, 12-10).  Chelmsford G (Ian Austin, Sarah Austin and Andy Swales) ran out 10-0 winners against Hatfield Peverel D. Press Report Issued 25 November 2018

Another excellent performance from Daniel Young

Danbury B - without a win in division one of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League turned in an excellent performance against third placed Rawreth and only missed out 6-4. This was largely down to their leading player - Daniel Young who won his three singles. Young scored three good wins beating Kim Shead (11-2, 13-11, 11-4), Reece Seddon (10-12, 11-4, 11-9, 11-8) and Charles Sweeney (4-11, 11-5, 11-8, 8-11, 11-8).  Maldon A continue to set the pace and they ran out 8-2 winners against Galleywood A. Maldon retain a six point lead. Maldon‘s Alex Abbott and Trevor Lloyd were both undefeated although the stand-out win here was Gary Brignall‘s superb 13-15, 11-9, 8-11, 11-3, 11-5 victory over John Poysden. Chelmsford A remain the only realistic challengers to Maldon A and they also won 8-2. Wal Bada was undefeated and his trio of wins included a fine 11-4, 11-9, 11-4 win over Gary Young. However, Gary Young showed up well in his other two singles and he beat Casey Cross (11-4, 12-10, 11-6) and another newcomer Tulay Dundar (11-6, 11-9, 2-11, 11-7). Writtle A excelled by beating Hatfield Peverel A 10-0. With 2018 M&G Investments Chelmsford Mens Singles Champion Duncan Taylor in their line-up you would have expected Writtle to have the edge but the 10-0 scoreline was certainly unexpected. Matthew Brown opened proceedings with a fine 11-5, 9-11, 10-12, 11-8, 11-9 win over Julie Johnson and Writtle never looked back. Ryan Pitt was on inspired form racing to three 3-0 wins. He beat Alastair Piper 11-9, 11-7, 11-7 and then Julie Johnson 11-4, 11-5, 11-8. Pitt completed an outstanding evening‘s work by defeating Jan Fuller 11-7, 11-2, 11-8. Chelmsford B scored their third win of the season by getting the better of Writtle B 6-4 - good going as Gary Cattermole won his three singles for the Writtle side. Cattermole beat Simon Jarvis 11-4, 11-6, 9-11, 9-11, 11-9 after Jarvis had levelled at 2-2.

Chelmsford Pumas also lost 3-2 to Chelmsford Jaguars. Annabel Sweeney beat both Saul Chivers (11-7, 11-7, 11-7) and Joachim Mapes (11-7, 11-6, 11-7).West Maldon recorded their third win of the Season. Noah Sage was pushed to four ends to beat Cleon Fernandez (8-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-3).

The match in CLICK division 1B between Chelmsford Panthers and Buttsbury Badgers was a good one. Badgers won 3-2 but Chelmsford Panthers displayed excellent fighting spirit. Theo Griffiths beat Oscar Hutt 11-9, 11-9, 7-11, 6-11, 14-12 and Griffiths and George Spicer defeated Oscar Hutt and Harry Hutt in the doubles (4-11,13-11, 6-11, 11-9, 13-11). The entry form is in the middle of your handbook. Please note that it was agreed at the AGM that entries will only be accepted if payment is made by the closing date. Late entries or entries without payment will not be accepted. So far very few entries have been received and it would be appreciated if players do not leave it until the eleventh hour to enter.

Press Report Issued 18 November 2018

Maldon A hit top form and Danbury A pay the price

Maldon A are setting a very hot pace in division one of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League and 69 points out of 80- eight wins out of eight is a fair indication of their level of dominance so far. You wouldn’t normally expect a Danbury A side containing Gary Young and Dave Richardson to lose 10-0 but that was their fate against Maldon A this week. Trevor Lloyd, Alex Abott and John Poysden were all on top form. Alex Abbott set the ball rolling with a 11-7, 11-6, 11-9 win over Dave Richardson in the first game and Maldon never let up. Chelmsford A (63 points) are Maldon’s only realistic challengers and they ran out 9-1 winners against Liberal A - their seventh win of the Season. Wal Bada and Ugur Saglik were both undefeated whilst Adam Buxton impressed for the losers. He scored a convincing 3-0 win over Casey Cross. The third and fourth placed teams both won. Terry Dowsett led OCs A to a 6-4 win over Danbury B. The big shock here was that Daniel Berry scored a superb 3-1 victory over Daniel Young. Chris Buer impressed for Danbury B beating both Daniel Berry (3-2) and Peter Windley (again 3-2). Rawreth A are fourth and they beat Galleywood A 7-3. Liam Squirrell and Bruce Kettle were both undefeated. Rawreth A also lost 4-6 to Danbury A after being a player short. Liam Squirrel was again unbeaten and with 12 wins out of 12 it is clear that he is a player to look out for. On the flip side this team have used 11 players in seven matches - and it is clear that they are unable to field a settled team even at this early stage of the Season.

OCs B top the division two table with 57 points out of 80. However they didn’t have it all their own way in beating Maldon C 6-4. The hugely experienced John Holland - just one defeat in 21 games beat all three OCs players  - David Porter (3-0), Stephen Northcott (3-0) and Trevor Carter (3-1). Carter was involved in the best match of the night and he saw off Dawn Baldry - just - 11-5, 8-11,11-3, 6-11, 12-10. Chelmsford C suffered their first defeat of the Season. They lost 7-3 to second placed Maldon B. Waseem Quereshi hit top form for the Chelmsford side with three wins but Colin Napper, Hamish Innes and Ciaran Whelan all won twice to give Maldon the ascendancy. Maldon helped their cause considerably by winning all four five setters with Hamish Innes setting them on their way with a 11-5, 9-11, 11-5, 10-12, 12-10 victory over Wiktor Delimat.  Sam Lowman is another player who continues to impress and he was unbeaten as Danbury D beat OCs C 7-3. Dan Anderson was involved in three close games. He beat Tom Barker (11-9, 11-8, 6-11, 9-11, 11-9) and Charles Yeung (8-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-9) but he missed out against Frank Hodge (11-8, 9-11, 12-10, 9-11, 10-12). The big-hitting Gary Ward is another very experienced performer at this level and he was undefeated for Writtle C against Danbury C. Unfortunately that was all Writtle were able to win as Danbury won the other seven games. Glen Laing prevailed in five ends against John Parodi (9-11, 5-11, 11-7, 11-8, 12-10). Hatfield Peverel B were indebted to Neil Freeman as they beat Danbury E 6-4. Freeman completed his hat-trick with a 8-11, 11-7, 10-12, 11-7, 11-9 win over Ken Sheard.

Division three is very evenly matched and after eight rounds of matches OCs D and Chelmsford D are tied on 51 points.  OCs D fared better this week. Gareth Joice was unbeaten in their 7-3 win over Writtle D. David Porter completed proceedings with a 8-11, 11-7, 11-13, 13-11, 14-12 victory over Bob Garson. Chelmsford D were held to a 5-5 draw by third placed Maldon D. Chelmsford D‘s Dave Parker was involved in two gruelling five enders. His match against Thomas Page looked very evenly poised after they had shared games (10-12, 10-12, 12-10, 14-12) but the fifth end was one-sided and Page raced away to win 11-2. Parker came back well to beat Mervyn Perriman (9-11, 11-4, 6-11, 16-14, 12-10) in his last game.   Nicky Reece-Ford impressed for Danbury G who drew 5-5 with Danbury H. He completed his hat-trick with a hard-fought five-end win over Eamon Hall (9-11, 11-9, 11-4, 9-11, 12-10). The “bubble burst” for  Mo Hardy - just one defeat up to this match - and he lost all three singles this time. Mo - always one to lighten the mood with a joke quipped that “the Away venue had led to his change in fortunes”.  Danbury F scored their second win of the Season by beating Writtle E 8-2. Richard Gardiner and Dave Marsh were both undefeated.  The comment on the scorecard is well worth repeating - Dave Marsh has high-lighted the fact that his 11-7, 12-10, 2-11, 11-7 win over Malcolm Storey was “revenge” for his loss in the Chelmsford Under 17 Boys Singles Championships Semi-Final ..… in 1969 !. A long time to wait !. Writtle E in turn did better against OCs F and Neil Thompson led them to a 7-3 success. Bob Francis won twice for the losers which included a narrow 6-11, 12-10, 11-6, 9-11, 11-9 win over Alan Offord. OCs F also tasted success. They beat OCs E 7-3. Ashton Parker led the way with three wins and Tanishq Kotwal won twice.

With eight wins out of eight Danbury J (Rob Kneale / Dave Goody / Richard Allen) are comfortable leaders in division four. They beat Writtle F this week 6-4 although they all lost to David Meah who now has a record of 11 wins out of 12. Meah beat Richard Allen 12-10, 7-11, 11-9, 12-10 in a well contested opening game and Rob Kneale 5-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-6 in his second singles. Undoubtedly seeing the ball “like a football” in his third singles he powered to a 11-8, 11-6, 11-9 win over Dave Goody.   Chelmsford E are second and they surged to a 8-2 win over Highwood A. Dusan Doszkoty and Martin Hiskey were both undefeated as they beat Highwood A 8-2. Hiskey prevailed against Melanie Bonnett by the unusual scoreline of 11-1, 10-12, 4-11, 11-2, 11-8. Chelmsford E relied on team-work to beat Chelmsford F 7-3.  Jon Dyson, James Donald and Dusan Doszkoty all won twice. James Donald fought back from 2-0 down to get the better of Vineeth Kamma 6-11, 6-11, 11-5, 13-11, 12-10. It was a similar story for Highwood B who beat Galleywood B 6-4. Frank Neill, Francis Whitbread and Martin Goddard all won twice to repel Colin Blore’s three wins for Galleywood B.

Galleywood C lead the way in division five and second-placed Chelmsford G were not able to close on them this week. Their match finished as a 5-5 draw. Mark Glenister and Aidan Noguchi won twice for Galleywood whilst Andy Swales and Sarah Austin picked up two wins for Chelmsford G. Sarah Austin excelled by beating Mark Glenister 11-8, 7-11, 11-2, 11-9 whilst Glenister looked sharp as he disposed of Andy Swales 11-8, 11-4, 11-8. OCs H were 6-4 winners over Hatfield Peverel D - courtesy of a Stuart Wintle hat-trick whilst Hatfield Peverel E ran out 7-3 winners against Chelmsford J. John Kuhl, Kath Little and Phil West all won twice to counter Jacqui Smith’s trio of wins for the Chelmsford side.

All four results in CLICK division 1A produced clear-cut winners this week. The leaders - Danbury Dragons made it 26 points out of 30 by beating second-placed Chelmsford Cougars 4-1. Sam Mortimer-Ford was undefeated whilst Ben Porter came within “inches” of staying unbeaten as well. He only missed out to Sudheep Kamma 10-12, 11-8, 11-5, 6-11, 10-12. The other three matches produced 5-0 scorelines. Danbury Demons (Elliot Gardiner and Ewan Hynd) dominated against Buttsbury Bears whereas Chelmsford Cougars (Sudheep Kamma and Harry Chivers) impressed against Chelmsford Leopards. Danbury Dragons (Sam Mortimer-Ford and Connor Hall - on this occasion) didn’t drop a game in beating Chelmsford Jaguars.

The leaders OCs Lions were a player short in CLICK division 1B. However, Josh Peasgood retained his 100 % record (12 wins out of 12) so they only lost to Chelmsford Wildcats 3-2. With Peasgood again “firing on all cylinders” they beat second-placed Chelmsford Rhinos 4-1. Dan Wise was on target for the losers with a 11-6, 11-6, 11-5 win over Tom Bird but he lost his 100 % record to Josh Peasgood who stormed home 11-2, 11-3, 11-8. Buttsbury Bulldogs ran out 4-1 winners against Danbury Griffins after Max Samuels had beaten both William Ratcliffe (11-6, 11-7, 11-8) and Finley Bailey (11-5, 11-9, 12-10). With Theo Griffiths winning his two singles Chelmsford Panthers were 4-1 winners against Chelmsford Wildcats. Georgina Riches beat Prayrak Gupta 11-7, 12-10, 11-8 for the losers.

Local players excelled at the VETTS Eastern Masters Tournament at Norwich over the weekend of 10/11 November 2018. Maldon A’s John Poysden had a fantastic weekend winning the Mens Over 60s Doubles with Scottish partner Peter Aird and he also pushed hard-hitting left-hander and top seed Phil Cawser (Yorkshire) all the way to 12-10 in the fifth end in the Mens Over 60s Singles. Lucy Wang (Galleywood) scored one of the biggest upsets of the Season. She won the Ladies Over 50s Singles beating top seed and England no. one Sue Collier (Berkshire) in the Final. Wow !.

And yet another reminder - all players are reminded that the Closing Date for entry to the M&G Investments Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League Closed Tournament (which will be held over the weekend of 1, 2 & 3 February 2019), is 14 December 2018. Six wins out of six for Chelmsford C

Chelmsford C might just be the surprise act in division two of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. They made it six wins out of six by beating Danbury D 6-4. They displayed a “united front”  to beat Danbury D 6-4. Waseem Qureshi, Mike Johnston and Wictor Delimat all won twice. Delimat displayed top form as he beat Sam Lowman decisively 11-7, 11-4, 11-7. Ward found himself pegged back by Tom Barker before he triumphed 11-9, 11-9, 10-12, 9-11, 11-6.

There was only one scorecard from division one this week and it was Julie Johnson who dominated matters as Hatfield Peverel A lost 3-7 to Chelmsford B. She “opened her innings” with a hard-fought 6-11, 11-9, 11-4, 3-11, 11-8 win over Rob Shrimpton and she also beat Mark Allaway 6-11, 9-11, 11-5, 11-6, 11-4 and Victor Chan 7-11, 11-3, 11-3, 11-9. An excellent evening’s work.

The evenly matched nature of division three was illustrated in the match between OCs D and Danbury F. Second placed OCs D raced into a 5-0 lead but Danbury F hit back well to win four of the second half games. League Chairman David Porter won his three singles to give OCs the ascendancy. There was also a first defeat for the leaders - Chelmsford D. Danbury H (Dave Hancox / Eamonn Hall / Allan Steel) all won twice as they won 6-4. Eamonn Hall‘s victory against Dave Parker can only be described as a “marathon”. It lasted 50 minutes and the fifth game took an incredible 25 minutes. Press Report Issued 28 October 2018

Mixed evening for Scott Dowsett

Scott Dowsett is one of the most stylish and enigmatic players in division one of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League and there can be little doubt what a good player he is when he hits top form. He was involved in three close games as his side - Hatfield Peverel A lost 3-7 to OCs A. He missed out to an improving Dan Berry in four ends (4-11, 11-5, 10-12, 8-11) and then upped the ante considerably to beat Dad - Terry (9-11, 11-8, 11-6, 7-11, 11-7) and in his third singles he played a “blinder” before missing out to Paul Lucas (11-8, 5-11, 3-11, 12-10, 10-12). Lucas with 16 wins out of 18 continues to impress greatly on his return to the game. Gary Young is playing as well as ever with 11 wins out of 12 and he was undefeated as Danbury A shared the points with Galleywood A. However it was a close shave against Gary Brignall who pushed him all the way before succumbing 4-11, 14-12, 5-11, 11-9, 10-12. Brignall also did well to beat Eric Green decisively (11-7, 11-3, 11-9). Gary Young was also undefeated against Liberal and this included a five set win over old rival Paul Davison (9-11, 11-7, 16-18, 11-8, 11-6). James Mullane made his mark here with a fine win over Steve Whiteley (11-3, 9-11, 11-6, 11-8). Danbury ran out 7-3 winners. Rawreth leap-frogged over Writtle A into fourth place courtesy of a Reece Seddon hat-trick as Rawreth won 6-4. Richard Storey won twice for Writtle which included an excellent 11-9, 12-10, 7-11, 11-9 victory over Kim Shead. Maldon A top the table with six wins out of six (50 points out of 60) but they could only field two players against Writtle A and had to settle for a 7-3 win.

Alex Abbott and Trevor Lloyd were both undefeated. Lee McHugh pushed Trevor Lloyd hard before missing out in five ends (8-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-8, 6-11).  Galleywood A secured their second win of the Season - an 8-2 victory over Danbury B. Ian Whiteside impressed for the losers with victories over both Gary Brignall and James Hicks.

The big news in division two is that five times M&G Investments Chelmsford Veterans Champion John Holland suffered his first defeat of the Season as fourth-placed Maldon C lost 6-4 to Hatfield Peverel B. In what has to be considered an up set of considerable proportions  Holland lost out 11-8, 9-11,8-11, 9-11 to an inspired Neil Freeman who scored his first “full-house of the Season”. Freeman completed an excellent night’s work by beating Dawn Baldry 11-9, 11-8, 17-15.

With divisions three, four and five all involved with Cup matches the spot-light now moves on to the CLICK League. Danbury Dragons moved into top place in division 1A by beating Buttsbury Bears 5-0. Sam Mortimer-Ford and Ben Porter were both undefeated and Porter remains unbeaten with four wins out of four. Chelmsford Leopards scored their second win of the Season - 3-2 against Danbury Demons - good going  as Jenson Davis won both of his singles for the Danbury side. Davis beat Cameron Waite 5-11, 11-9, 12-10, 7-11, 11-9 after a rare old struggle. Chelmsford Cougars are second and they beat Chelmsford Pumas 5-0. Al Lane and Sudheep Kamma carried all before them. Al Lane defeated Saul Chivers 11-6, 10-12, 11-7, 3-11, 11-9 in the closest game of the evening.

Chelmsford Rhinos lead the way in CLICK division 1B and Dan Wise and Malachi O’Leary gave nothing away as they beat Buttsbury Badgers 5-0. The opening clash between George Standish and Malachi O’Leary could hardly have been closer with O’Leary prevailing 11-9, 11-9, 21-19. Danbury Griffins scored their first win of the Season, a 4-1 success against Chelmsford Panthers. Adam Thirkettle was undefeated beating both George Spicer and Prayrak Gupta. OCs Lions are second and they made it three wins out of three by beating Buttsbury Bulldogs 3-2. Josh Peasgood won his two singles to retain his 100 % record (six wins out of six).

The Handicap Cup has produced some close matches. Games are played up to 21 points - a reminder of days long gone !. Danbury H -Gordon Gatheral (playing off a handicap of 59) , Sam Mortimer-Ford (42) and Ben Porter (43) raced into a 3-0 lead against OCs C (Nat Ravlic (60), Tanishq Kotwal (56) and David Newman (52) only to be pegged back to 3-3. This was clearly anyone’s match. Sam Mortimer-Ford showed real composure to beat Tanishq Kotwal 21-19, 21-6 to give Danbury H the edge. Could they close the match out ?. The answer was “no” as David Newman beat Gordon Gatheral 20-22, 21-8, 21-19. All to play for !. And it was Ben Porter who came through to beat Nat Ravlic quite convincingly 21-17, 21-8 to clinch an excellent win for his Danbury side. OCs C - Gareth Joice (63), David Porter (60) and Mick Hayes (57) impressed in beating Chelmsford J 5-1. Joice and Hayes were both undefeated. Writtle C have a record of doing well in this event and Dave Calleja (63), John Parodi (60) and Gary Ward (69) ran out 6-3 winners over Chelmsford H. Gary Ward won his three singles beating James Donald (35) 21-19, 24-22, Jamie Dowsett (47) 22-20, 21-15 and Michael Whelpdale (49) 21-16, 21-16. Hatfield Peverel A are through to the second round. Paul Mulley (56) led the way as they beat Chelmsford B 5-3. Three contrasting wins as well. Mulley beat Keith Martin (62) easily 21-6, 21-9 and Connor Payne (56) off scratch 21-13, 15-21, 21-17 and he sealed the  Hatfield Peverel victory by getting the better of Jarek Pietraszuk (58) 21-6, 24-22.  Danbury F took advantage of the free week to play Chelmsford D in their second round clash. But it was Chelmsford D who prevailed 5-3. Robert Shrimpton (64), Victor Chan (64) and Mark Allaway (61) all played their part. Dave Marsh (62) won twice for the losers beating Chan (21-18, 21-13) and Shrimpton (15-21, 22-20, 21-16).

Three excellent wins for Daniel Young

The first division is firmly back in the spotlight this week in the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. There were a number of strong performances and 14 year old Daniel Young led the way. He won all three singles as Danbury B lost 3-7 to Danbury A. Three good wins by any standards. He was clearly on good form as he beat Steve Whiteley 11-4, 11-4, 11-7 and he fought back from 2-0 down to get the better of Dave Richardson 13-15, 8-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-7. A good performance was about to become a great one. In his third singles he beat his Dad - Gary 11-8, 2-11,11-9, 13-11. Champions Maldon A have set such a high standard that when they lose games it makes interesting reading. Chelmsford B’s Simon Jarvis beat both Trevor Lloyd (12-10, 11-7, 11-8) and Colin Stallwood (10-12, 11-13, 11-8, 11-9, 11-6) in his side’s 2-8 defeat. Chelmsford A beat Writtle A 8-2. Wal Bada and newcomer Ugur Saglik both won their three singles. Ugur Saglik - the highest nationally ranked player in the League did not drop a game and there is no doubt that a Chelmsford side featuring Bada, Saglik and Eddie Ogbebor will give Maldon a real run for their money.  Rawreth also won 8-2. Kim Shead and Liam Squirrel were both undefeated against Chelmsford B.

OCs B lead the way in division two. It will be a big surprise if they don’t stay in pole position. With four times Chelmsford Mens Singles Champion David Cole in their line up they ran out 8-2 winners against Writtle C. Kevin Worthington joined Cole in staying undefeated and he beat Gary Ward 10-12, 11-8, 11-6, 11-8. He beat Eddie Ogbebor 5-11, 9-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-9. Danbury A with a line-up of Gary Young, Peter Mynard and Dave Richardson should do well and Gary Young was undefeated as they beat Writtle B 8-2. Paul Sturton scored two fine wins for the losers and he battled hard to get the better of Pete Mynard 6-11, 12-10, 2-11, 11-6, 11-8. Galleywood A have also made a winning start. James Hick scored a fine hat-trick as they beat Chelmsford B 7-3. Hicks beat Simon Jarvis 11-9, 11-9, 7-11 6-11, 11-5 in a well contested opening encounter.

OCs B are the week’s big winners in division two. Trevor Carter and Steve Nothcott were unbeaten as they overcame Hatfield Peverel B 9-1. Northcott battled through against Dave Fiddeman after a “hum-dinger” of a game 11-9, 11-2, 10-12 10-12, 15-13. Last year‘s division three Champions - Maldon B should definitely be in with a “shout for honours“. Ciaran Whelan led them to a 6-4 win over Danbury D. Whelan beat Sam Lowman - the best of the Danbury players - 7-11, 13-11, 11-8, 11-5. Maldon C also made an impressive start by beating Writtle C 8-2. John Holland and Merv Perriman won their three singles and Dawn Baldry won twice. It was the performance of Perriman which caught the eye here. He beat John Gagg 9-11, 6-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-7 and Dave Calleja 11-6, 11-8, 3-11, 8-11, 11-9 - two excellent wins. Chelmsford C ran out 6-4 winners against Danbury E after Mike Johnston and Waseem Qureshi had both won their three singles whilst the match between Danbury C and OCs C finished as a 5-5 draw. Neil Want was unbeaten for the Danbury team and he completed his hat-trick by getting the better of Charles Yeung 11-6, 11-18, 7-11, 12-14, 11-9 in the last game of the night.

Chelmsford D impressed in division three. Keith Martin won his three singles and he was supported by Connor Payne and Dave Parker (who both won twice) as they beat OCs F 8-2. Martin fought back very strongly to beat Ashton Parker 2-11, 6-11, 11-7, 12-10, 11-8. Writtle D also won 8-2. Trevor Collin led the way with a hat-trick against Writtle E. Peter Layzell overcame Steve Siggs 8-11, 11-7, 4-11, 11-7, 11-9 in the closest game of the night. In a hard-fought match in which no one player stayed undefeated Danbury F beat OCs E 6-4. Dave Marsh and Richard Gardner (Danbury) and Nat Ravlic and Richard Baxter (OCs) all stayed undefeated. Maldon D did well to beat Danbury G 7-3. Shirley Carroll in particular excelled. She beat both Nicky Ford (6-11,12-10, 3-11, 13-11, 12-10) and Norman Smith (11-6, 11-13, 13-11, 11-7) in her impressive hat-trick. Team work saw OCs D sneak through 6-4 against Danbury H. Mike Hayes, Gareth Joice and Dave Porter all won twice in another match (fairly unique in the middle division) where no one player stayed unbeaten. Newcomer Luca Bailey made his mark by beating Gareth Joice 11-7, 8-11, 8-11, 11-5, 11-8.

Writtle F are the early leaders in division four. Malcolm Storey and Brian Steward led the way as they beat Galleywood B 9-1. Brian Steward’s hat-trick included a 11-9, 11-5, 9-11, 9-11,11-4 win over Ron Salton - the best of the Galleywood players. Danbury J are also off to a convincing start. They beat OCs G 8-2. Rob Kneale and Dave Powell both won their three singles. It was “touch and go” though for Rob Kneale who just beat James Mitty 11-6, 8-11, 5-11, 11-9, 13-11. The match between Chelmsford E and Danbury K ended as a 5-5 draw. Chelmsford’s Amanda Hogger “stole” the show with her excellent 6-11,11-7, 11-7, 5-11, 11-7 victory over Mick Robinson. Hatfield Peverel C beat Chelmsford E 6-4 and it was the performance of newcomer Martin Archie that stood out. He won his three singles in convincing style.

Division five can be difficult to call as teams often improve dramatically over the Season. Maldon E led by Garry Eames and Denis Crapnell beat Chelmsford H 7-3 and they should be “in the mix“. Galleywood C led by Gary Copsey beat Chelmsford G 6-4 and you wouldn’t expect Copsey to lose many at this level. Fast improving Aidan Noguchi won twice. Chelmsford J (Jacqueline Smith, Paul Bullock and Peter Davenport) ran out 8-2 winners against Hatfield Peverel E and on that showing you would expect them to do well. Philip West won the week’s tightest game beating Jacqueline Smith 12-14, 19-17, 10-12, 11-4, 13-11. Paul Bullock’s success is an interesting one as he has entered the League after taking up the Sport at the “Bat n’Chat” Sessions at Riverside Leisure Centre which take place on Tuesday mornings from 10.00 to 12.00 hours and are staffed by Qualified Coaches. The emphasis is on having fun and sociability and it is hoped that other players will follow Paul’s example and join the League. OCs H complete this week’s action with their 7-3 win over Hatfield Peverel D. Michael Lucy led the way with three wins and this included a five set success against Philip West who he beat 10-12, 11-6, 5-11, 11-8, 11-6.
