Matthew Mulley stars as the spoils are shared between the league's top two teams

Matthew Mulley took his record to 66 division one matches undefeated in the C&DTTL as league leaders Old Chelmsfordians A drew at unbeaten Chelmsford A.

Division 1

Old Chelmsfordians A end the year at the top of division 1 with a seven-point lead following a 5-5 draw at Chelmsford A.  OCA’s Mark Mulley beat the returning Saul Chivers 3-1 in the opening contest before Chelmsford’s Gary Young recovered from one game down to beat Paul Lucas by the same scoreline.  Matthew Mulley’s first appearance of the evening saw him put the disappointment of losing game three by a 14-12 scoreline behind him to win the remaining two games in a 3-2 victory over Harry Chivers while Chelmsford’s Young won his second individual match of the evening with a 3-1 success over Mark Mulley.  Matthew Mulley restored OCA’s lead with a 3-0 win over Saul Chivers before Chelmsford then got their noses in front with Harry Chivers winning 3-0 over Paul Lucas and a 3-2 doubles success.  OCA then responded when Matthew Mulley beat Gary Young 3-1 and Mark Mulley beat Harry Chivers 3-1 which set up the final match of the evening in which Saul Chivers fought back from 1-0 down against Lucas to earn Chelmsford a well deserved draw.  Danbury B moved up into fourth position with a 10-0 victory over Writtle A.  Sam Lowman, Ian Wall and Dan Anderson all secured trebles with just one game lost between them.

Standings div 1: 1: Old Chelmsfordians A 82 points (from 11 matches), 2: Chelmsford A 75 points (11 matches), 3: Danbury C 69 points (12 matches).

Division 2

Division 2 represents the closest division in the C&DTTL this season and with just fourteen points separating the top six teams - a good run of results by any of those sides in the second half of the season could see the title go their way.  Gary Ward and John Webber were both on form winning all of their individual matches and teaming together for doubles success as Writtle C took back third position from Maldon A with a 7-3 victory at home to Danbury F.  The closest match of the evening was Steve Buer’s 3-2 win over John Parodi while Chris Buer’s recent run of victories ended with a 3-0 loss against Webber and 3-1 loss against Ward.

Richard Storey continued his fine division 2 form with another treble as his Writtle B side won 8-2 over Danbury D.  Storey’s teammate Phil Smith also won three times with Trevor Carter’s hopes of joining them being dashed by an Eamonn Hall recovery from 2-1 down.  Carter had earlier seen five-game action against Dave Meah with victory secured by an 11-9 scoreline in the decider.

Standings div 2: 1: Chelmsford C 68 points (from 10 matches), 2: Hatfield Peverel A 63 points (from 10 matches), 3: Writtle C 60 points (11 matches)

Division 3

Paul Sturton and Jamie Elliot earned trebles as Buttsbury A closed the gap on division 3 league leaders Galleywood B with an 8-2 victory.  Elliot won all his matches 3-0 while Sturton dropped just one game - in his final match of the evening against Malcolm Storey.  The opening contest saw the closest scoreline as Storey got the better of Gary Carr over five games - Carr lost out to Dave Moles after beating Ian Hockley.

Standings div 3: 1: Galleywood B 72 points (from 10 matches), 2: Buttsbury A 67 points (10 matches), 3: OCA C 57 points (from 10 matches).

Open Cup

Round one:

Chelmsford C advanced to the semi finals of the Open Cup with a 5-2 victory over clubmates Chelmsford D.  The duo of Keith Martin and Omar Wasi got the D team off to a solid start in the opening contest of the night with a 3-1 win over Harrison Hill and Waseem Qureshi but Hill and Victor Chan won their individual matches against Keith Martin and Kelvin Felix to put the C team 2-1 up.  Qureshi then lost 3-1 to Wasi to level the overall match score before a doubles win for Chan/Hill followed by individual wins for Qureshi and Hill booked the C team’s place in the next round.  Danbury A set up a semi-final tie with Chelmsford C with a 5-3 home win against Chelmsford B.   The visitors took the lead with a 3-0 victory in the opening doubles contest before Danbury hit back with individual wins for Eric Green, Bruce Kettle and Dave Richardson.  Chelmsford C then reduced the match score to 3-2 with a second doubles victory of the evening and Saul Chivers then produced a fine 3-1 win over Richardson to put Chelmsford level at 3-3.  Kettle then beat Aidan Lees to restore Danbury’s lead and put them within one of winning the tie and his teammate Eric Green duly obliged with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Kim Shead.

Round one:

Writtle D cruised through to the semi final of the division 3 cup with a 5-0 victory over Chelmsford E.  Trevor Collin, Malcolm Henstock and Peter Layzell all won their individual matches with Henstock recovering from 2-0 down against Rev Matthews.  The OCA C trio of Tom Barker, Richard Upson and Luke Richardson all had a hand in their sides 5-1 away win at Highwood A.  Roger Patient’s 3-0 win over Upson levelled the match score at 1-1 before the next four contests went in favour of the visitors.  Barker and Upson recovered from 2-0 down to win the second doubles match of the evening before Upson made amends for his loss to Patient with a 3-0 win over Keith Fitz-John to secure OCA’s victory.  A fine team effort by Peter Hance, Dave Marsh and Louis Gunn saw Danbury J sweep into the semi-finals with a 5-2 home win over Writtle E.  Two three-game doubles wins within the first five contests helped Danbury take a 4-1 lead before Neil Thompson reduced the arrears for the visitors with an epic 3-2 win over Gunn (13-11, 11-8, 10-12, 10-12, 11-9).  The visitors may have left the venue ruing their slow start to the evening as Ian Hockley went close in his contest with Marsh - the Danbury ace secured the win 14-12 in the fifth game.

Division 5 Cup

Round one:

Semi-final:

Chelmsford J won through to the final of the division 5 cup with a convincing 5-1 win over clubmates Chelmsford H.  The J team won three of the first four matches by a 3-0 scoreline - the only exception being the match between Dave Parker and Peter Davenport which saw Parker rally from 2-1 down.  The H team put themselves on the scoreboard with a five-game victory in the doubles before Elliot Hawthorn secured progress with an 11-9, 9-11, 13-11, 13-11 win over Jason Clark.

Just two teams remain undefeated as the C&DTTL reaches the halfway point

With half a season played, Chelmsford A (division 1) and Galleywood C (division 4) are the sole undefeated teams in the C&DTTL as Danbury M’s perfect start to the season finally ended (see division 5 section below).  Chelmsford A’s record of 10 matches unbeaten is under serious threat on Monday night as they host division 1 leaders Old Chelmsfordians A at Chelmsford Sports and Athletics Centre.

Handicap Cup Round 2

Highwood B booked a place in the Quarter finals of the handicap cup with a 5-3 win over Writtle D.  Writtle stormed into a 3-1 lead thanks to two wins for Matthew Brown (70) before Keith Pallett (36) kick-started the revival with a two-game win over David Carter (54).  Nicola Pippen (45) kept up the momentum for Highwood as she squeezed past Malcolm Henstock (59) 21-19 in the deciding game before David Cockrell (45) beat Carter 2-1 having trailed 1-0.  Trailing 4-3 on the night, the eighth match was a must win for Writtle but Brown was unable to put any sort of pressure on Pippen who comfortably took her team through to the next round.  Evie Knaapen (50) and Jamie Elliott (60) both won twice as Buttsbury F went through to the quarter finals with a 5-1 win over Chelmsford H.  The evening was not as straightforward for the hosts as the scoreline might suggest with four of the six matches going the three-game distance.  With Buttsbury taking an early 3-1 lead, Elliott fought back from one game down to beat Jacqui Smith (40) before Freya Hart (30) also overturned a 1-0 deficit to beat Shengbing Zhu (34).  Knaapen then wrapped up the tie with a come-from-behind win over Peter Davenport (36).  Salih Salim (45) won three as Chelmsford G became the third team of the week to progress to the quarter finals following a 5-2 victory over Writtle B.  Salim beat both Dave Moles (55) and Colin Barham (53) in two games before recovering from 1-0 down to beat Ian Hockley (55).

Division 1

Old Chelmsfordians A took back control of division 1 with a comprehensive 10-0 victory over Chelmsford B.  Paul Lucas, Mark Mulley and Keiran Lally dropped just one individual game between them - Aidan Lees had gone 1-0 up in his match against Lucas only for Lucas to take the next three games by a tight 12-10, 11-9, 11-8 scoreline.  Lees had earlier tested Mulley in a 13-11, 13-11, 11-4 loss.  Keith Adams, Ian Whiteside and James Donald all fired hat tricks as Danbury C consolidated third place with a 10-0 victory over Writtle A.   While Adams and Donald dropped just one game between them, Whiteside won from 2-0 down against Ryan Pitt and beat Richard Storey 11-9 in the fifth game decider.

Standings div 1: 1: OCA A 77 points (from 10 matches), 2: Chelmsford A 70 points (10 matches), 3: Danbury C 69 points (12 matches).

Division 4

Maldon B went level on points with unbeaten division four leaders Galleywood C following a 9-1 home win over Hatfield Peverel E.  Chris Ravenhill and Ella Sach scored trebles while Andrea Alleyne was denied one of her own when Kath Little won the deciding game in their contest.  Ravenhill earned his second successive treble with four game wins over Little and Philip West while his victory over Davina Brazier was won in the fifth game by an 18-16 scoreline.  Sach continued her upturn in form - just one loss in her last nine matches - defeating all three Hatfield Peverel players in four games.

Standings div 4: 1: Galleywood C 61 points (from 8 matches), 2: Maldon B 61 points (from 9 matches), 3: Chelmsford G 60 points (9 matches),

Division 5

Tenth placed Buttsbury C inflicted a first league defeat of the season for division five leaders Danbury M with a comprehensive 8-2 home win on Friday night.  Bolstered by Oscar Hutt and Lucy Elliott who have played some of the season to date in division four, Buttsbury raced into a 4-1 lead at the halfway stage.  When David Smith’s victory reduced the arrears to 4-2 there may still have been hope for the table-toppers but Hart and Hutt fought back from 2-1 down in the doubles to win the last two games 16-14, 14-12, and Hutt and Elliott completed their hat-trick of victories to dash the visitors hopes of a tenth straight victory.

Standings div 5: 1: Danbury M 70 points (from 10 matches), 2: Chelmsford J 59 points (10 matches), 3: Chelmsford H 55 points (from 9 matches).

Old Chelmsfordians A close gap on division 1 leaders Chelmsford A

Matthew Mulley and Harry Chivers fired hat-tricks for their respective teams as the division 1 heavyweights continue to trade blows during this 2023/2024 CDTTL season.  Old Chelmsfordians could go top on Tuesday when they play their match in hand against Chelmsford B.

Division 1

Matthew Mulley remains unbeaten this season as he hit another hat-trick in OCA A’s 8-2 victory over Danbury A.   Mulley beat both Chris Penrose and Babul McLeod in three games before edging Dave Richardson 3-2 having been 2-1 down.  Mulleys teammates Adam Buxton and Paul Lucas both won two games apiece with Buxton’s opening victory over Dave Richardson after being 2-1 down.  Both Buxton and Lucas were bested by Danbury’s Chris Penrose who after his three-game defeat at the hands of Mulley recovered to beat Buxton in five games and Lucas in three.  A Harry Chivers treble helped Chelmsford A to a 6-4 victory over third placed Danbury C - a result which maintains Chelmsford A’s unbeaten record this season.  Chivers won in four games against each of Trevor Lloyd, Keith Adams and David Gatheral while teammate Gary Young’s only loss of the evening was at the hands of Adams who himself won twice.  Adams and Lloyd overturned a 2-0 deficit against Chivers and Young in the doubles contest to win in five.  Three wins by Sam Lowman was not enough to earn his Danbury B side a fifth win of the season as they drew 5-5 with Chelmsford B.  Lowman beat Simon Jarvis in three, Andrew Dosher in four and Aidan Lees in five - the victory over Lees being decided by a 13-11 scoreline in the fifth game.  Jarvis and Dosher both won two matches for Chelmsford with the former involved in a tight 3-0 victory over Dan Anderson in the opening contest (13-11. 12-10. 12-10).

Standings div 1: 1: Chelmsford A 70 points (10 matches), 2 . OCA A 67 points (from 9 matches), 3: Danbury C 59  points (11 matches).

Leading averages div 1 (played 16+ matches):  1: Harry Chivers (Chelmsford A, 15/16 wins, 94%), 2: Gary Young (Chelmsford A, 23/27 wins, 85%), 3: Mark Mulley (OCA A, 16/20 wins, 80%).

Division 2

Chelmsford C went top of division 2 for the first time since week four with a 10-0 victory over Danbury G.  Waseem Qureshi hit his second hat-trick in as many weeks and he was joined by Mark Allaway and Harrison Hill who also won all their matches.  Qureshi and Denis Crapnell were involved in an entertaining contest which saw Crapnell take a 2-1 lead before the Chelmsford skipper was able to take the next two games.  The match between Allaway and Denis Balic was unarguably the contest of the evening with Balic leveling the contest in the fourth game before Allaway took the decider 11-8.  Maldon A’s 5-5 home draw with Danbury E was enough to move them up to third place for now with just three points separating seventh and third positions.  Danbury E had raced to a 3-0 start with Dick Wyman winning the opening contest of the evening in five games against Lloyd Bennett-Smith before Tony Forster beat Dawn Baldry 3-0.  At the start of the week, Tim Cramphorn (#58) and Hamish Innes (#59) were separated by just one place in the rankings list and a tight contest transpired, Cramphorn looked to be in control at 2-0 but Innes was able to up his game and level the contest with a 12-10 win in the fourth before Craphorn went on to win the contest 11-8 in the fifth.  Maldon won the next four matches which included Bennett-Smith recovering from 2-0 down against Cramphorn, with Cramphorn seeing five game action in his last match of the night - a win against Dawn Baldry.  Having missed his side's last two fixtures Chris Buer was back in action for Danbury F in their 7-3 home victory over OCA B.  Buer hit another treble - his fifth of the season as he extended his individual record to just one loss in his last 20 matches.  It wasn’t a straightforward evening for Buer by any means, his wins over Tom Barker and Mick Richardson were both over five games and he recovered from 1-0 down to beat Michael Hayes 3-1.  The 7-3 scoreline could perhaps have been very different, all of Richardson’s three individual matches went the five-game distance and his teammate Michael Hayes also competed in two and Tom Barker one - OCA won just one of those six matches.  John Tendler and Steve Buer earned two wins apiece with Tendler beaten 12-10 in the fifth by Richardson and Steve Buer seeing a 1-0 lead against Barker turn into a 3-1 loss.  Robin Armstrong and David Gatheral hit trebles as Danbury D won 7-3 at Chelmsford D.   Gatheral’s record moved to 10 successive division 2 victories though he had to dig deep against Dusan Doszkoty who had taken a 2-1 lead in their encounter, Doskoty had earlier won against Eamonn Hall in identical circumstances - yet another 5-game marathon this season for Doskoty (13/27).  In the opening contest of the evening, Alex Tkachuk fought back from 2-0 down to beat Hall 3-2 while Kelvin Felix put two 3-0 losses behind him to get the better of Hall in straight games.

Standings div 2: 1: Chelmsford C 68 points (10 matches), 2: Hatfield Peverel A 63 points (from 10 matches), 3: Maldon A 55 points (10 matches).

Leading averages div 2 (played 19+ matches):  1: Harrison Hill (Chelmsford C, 22/24 wins, 92%), 2: Martin Archie (Hatfield Peverel A, 23/27 wins, 85%), 3: Chris Buer (Danbury F, 20/24 wins, 83%).

Division 3

Having not seen a win in their last two fixtures, division 3 leaders Galleywood B were back to winning ways with a 7-3 victory at Danbury J.  John Holland and Mark Glenister were both undefeated during the evening with the closest contest being Holland’s 3-2 win over Peter Hance.  Buttsbury A beat the two person team of Danbury K 10-0 and moved into second position with a game in hand.  Jamie Elliott, Paul Sturton and Evie Knaapen were all undefeated with Sturton’s match with Alan Dadswell being the only match which went the distance.  OCA C slipped to third position with a 6-4 loss at the hands of Hatfield Peverel B.  Neil Freeman beat both Richard Baxter and Luke Richardson in four games and Tom Barker in three when earning his fifth hat-trick of the season for the hosts. Freeman was supported by a double from Gareth Davies who beat both Barker and Luke Richardson in three games but was denied a treble by Baxter over four.  Baxter won twice for the visitors - one of this wins being a five-gamer with Bob Hillis which he clinched 12-10 in the decider.  Peter Layzell fired a hat-trick as his Writtle D finished the week in fourth position following a 7-3 victory against clubmates Writtle E.  Malcolm Storey held a 2-1 lead in the opening contest of the evening until the Layzell response - the Writtle man going on to beat Neil Thompson 3-1 and Colin Barham 3-0.   Bob Garson won two of his three singles matches  for the eventual victors - beating Barham 3-1 and Thompson 3-2, and teamed with Malcolm Henstock to win the doubles match against Storey and Thompson over five games.  Tim Pulham, Ian Whiteside and Ken Sheard were in fine form as Danbury H beat Chelmsford F 10-0 to move above clubmates Danbury K and into sixth position.  Pulham - making only his third appearance of the season - won all of his matches 3-0 as did teammate Sheard.

Standings div 3: 1: Galleywood B 72 points (from 10 matches), 2: Buttsbury A 59 points (9 matches), 3: OCA C 57 points (from 10 matches).

Leading averages div 3 (played 19+ matches):  1: Jamie Elliot (Buttsbury A, 20/20 wins, 100%), 2: John Holland (Galleywood B, 22/24 wins, 92%), 3: Richard Baxter (OCA C, 16/21 wins, 76%).

Division 4

Galleywood C remain top of division four with eight wins out of eight thanks to two wins apiece for Colin Blore, Will Goodchild and Nathan Blore.  While Goodchild’s two wins were both by 3-0 scorelines, Nathan Blore’s victories were not settled until the deciding game - his encounter with Melanie Bonnett saw him recover from 2-0 down to win the last three games 14-12, 11-8, 11-9.  Highwood’s Roger Patient performed admirably in winning two of his matches against the league leaders - despite an opening 3-1 loss to Colin Blore he beat Goodchild 3-1 and Nathan Blore 3-0.  Bonnett took the last match of the evening in straight games over Colin Blore by a close 12-10, 11-9, 11-9 scoreline. Chelmsford C moved up to second place following a 10-0 victory at Hatfield Peverel D.  Cleon Fernandes dropped just one game as he extended his excellent current form to 20 wins from 21 matches while Vishnu Surendran chipped in with his maiden CDTTL hat-trick and Dion Fernandes scored his second consecutive treble.  The closest match of the evening was the encounter between Surendran and Jackie Treacy with the former recovering from 2-1 down to take the win.  Bob Hillis took the first game in each of his three encounters but was unable to continue those good starts as he fell to 3-1 losses against all opponents.   Alex Wilson’s first treble of the season wasn’t quite enough to prevent his Danbury L side losing 6-4 at home to third placed Maldon B.  Wilson got the better of Marty Englander in four games and won fifth game deciders against both Andrea Alleyne and Ella Sach - the victory over Sach was from a position of 2-0 down, Sach had earlier beaten Ken Wilding 3-2 after being 2-1 behind.  Danbury would have got a draw out of the fixture had Wilson and John Manning been able to convert a 2-0 lead in the doubles against Alleyne and Sach - the decider going to the Maldon duo by a 12-10 scoreline.  OCA D sit in fourth position following an 8-2 triumph at home to Buttsbury B.  Farooq Ahmed beat Frances Hutt in three games, Richard Pond in four and Phil Shippen in five while teammates David Newman and David Bishop both won twice - Hutt getting the better of both.  Ahmed and Bishop saw a 2-0 lead disappear in the doubles contest against Pond and Shippen though they recovered to take the decider 11-7.  In an encounter between two winless teams, Peter Mortensen hit a hat-trick as Hatfield Peverel C beat Hatfield Peverel E 6-4.  Mortensen was finally able to see off Davina Brazier by a 3-1 scoreline after three very closely contested games (19-17, 9-11, 12-10) before he beat James Brooks in four games and Phillip West in three.  Brazier let slip a 2-1 lead over Richard Drozd in her second contest of the evening but recovered to beat Andy Simmonds 3-1 having trailed 1-0.  Brooks’ loss to Mortensen was sandwiched between his victories over Simmonds and Drozd - dropping just one game in the process.

Standings div 4: 1: Galleywood C 61 points (from 8 matches), 2: Chelmsford G 60 points (9 matches), 3: Maldon B 52 points (from 8 matches).

Leading averages div 4 (played 19+ matches):  1: Cleon Fernandes (Chelmsford G, 21/24 wins, 88%), 2: Roger Patient (Highwood A, 22/27 wins, 82%), 3: Farooq Ahmed (OCA D, 19/24 wins, 79%).

Division 5

Another week, another Mark Nolan hat-trick for second placed Chelmsford J as they consolidated second place in the division 5 table with a 7-3 victory over winless Hatfield Peverel F.  Nolan won all three matches by a 3-0 scoreline and his season record now stands at 16 wins from 17 matches having dropped just eight games to date.  Shweta and Richard Lees supported Nolan with two victories apiece with Richard’s maiden wins the joint (!) story of the evening - having lost his first contest for his 16th successive defeat of his debut season he went on to beat Doug Marsh 3-1 and Alastair Brown 3-0.  The most entertaining match of the night was the five game encounter between Shweta Lees and Alastair Brown - the latter recovering from 2-1 down to take the contest in the decider.  The second part of the joint story of the contest was the victory for Martin Kilbey over Richard Lees - having gone 0-48 last season, Kilbey tasted success for the first time this season having seen 25 consecutive defeats.  Very well done to both Martin and Richard!  In a fixture which saw seven five-gamers, a Jacqui Smith treble helped Chelmsford H move into third position with a hard-fought 7-3 win at OCA E.  Smith won her opening contest of the evening against Stuart Wintle in five games before achieving the same 3-2 scorelines against both Mike Morecroft and Suzanne Shaw.  Shaw also saw five-game action in both of her other two matches - 3-2 wins against both Jason Clark and Peter Davenport.  Davenport’s 12-10 loss in the fifth game to Shaw prevented him from a treble of his own - he beat both Morecroft and Wintle 3-0.  Gary Eames marked his first CDTTL appearance of the season with an undefeated evening as hosts Maldon C beat Highwood B 7-3.  Eames found himself 2-1 down to Nicola Pippen in his opening contest but won the final two games by a tight 13-11, 11-9 scoreline.  Eames and Shirley Carroll beat Pippen and Keith Pallet 3-2 in the doubles contest with Highwood’s Pippen getting the better of both Carroll and Ross Wheeler by a 3-1 scoreline.

Standings div 5: 1: Danbury M 68 points (from 9 matches), 2: Chelmsford J 59 points (10 matches), 3: Chelmsford H 55 points (from 9 matches).

Leading averages div 5 (played 16+ matches):  1: Mark Nolan (Chelmsford J, 16/17 wins, 94%), 2: Douglas Bawuah (ARU, 19/24 wins, 79%), 3: David Smith (Danbury M, 16/21 wins, 76%).

Chelmsford Junior League division 1A

CJL division 1A runners up the Buttsbury Bears handed champions the Chelmsford Cougars their only loss of the season with a 4-1 scoreline.  Jayden Bandari got the Cougars off to a fine start with a 3-2 win over Callum Walker having found himself 2-0 down before Walker saw five-game action in his second contest - beating Ryan Peiris from 2-1 down.  Ben Robinson earned two 3-0 wins as the Chelmsford Tigers beat the Chelmsford Eagles 4-1.  Robinson dropped just 14 points in his match with Zane Kwantreng but had a closer contest with Grace Liu (11-9, 11-9, 11-8).  William Guilloux beat Kwantreng in three games and then joined forces with Robinson in the doubles to win by the same 3-0 scoreline.  The Danbury Dragons beat the Chelmsford Tigers 5-0 to end the season in third position with Peter Harverson and Oliver Martin dropping just one game between them.

Vivaan Babbar won twice as the Buttsbury Bulldogs beat the Chelmsford Leopards 3-2. Babbar won both of his matches by a 3-0 scoreline while Chelmsford’s George Matthews produced a fine comeback from 2-0 down to beat Shay Coughlan.  Sean Kwan and George Gregory both won twice as the Chelmsford Jaguars beat the Chelmsford Panthers 5-0.  Theo Peiris put up the most resistance for the Panthers as he took a game off both Jaguars.

Chelmsford Junior League division 1C

Zac Berry's first two wins of the season weren't quite enough to prevent his Buttsbury Bats team falling to a 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Chelmsford Lions. Berry beat Georgiana Major 3-2 in the opening contest of the afternoon having trailed 2-1, and later won by the same scoreline against Bernard Chow.  Chow and Major recovered from 1-0 down for a 3-1 victory over Berry and Ethan Bird in the doubles.  Two wins for Thomas Hall helped his Hutton Harriers to a 4-1 win over the Chelmsford Pumas. Hall withstood a Ben Robinson revival from 2-0 down to take the deciding game, and then went on to beat Taylor Cumber in three games. Anglia Ruskin University continue to march up the division 5 table

Douglas Bawuah and Kelvin Edeh both hit trebles for the second successive week as ARU moved up to fifth position in division five having sat bottom in week three after three losses to start the season.  Please see the division five section for more details.

Division 1

Gary Young scored his third hat-trick of the season as Chelmsford A returned to the top of the table with a 6-4 victory at home to Danbury B.  Young beat both Daniel Piggott and Dan Anderson but had earlier managed to resist a Sam Lowman comeback in the fourth game of their encounter to win the decider 13-11.  Josh Bickles won 3-0 against Piggott and Anderson but saw Lowman recover from 1-0 down to win their encounter in four games. Young and Bickles saw a 2-0 lead disappear in the doubles encounter with Anderson and Lowman but were able to win game five 11-7.  James Donald won three matches as Danbury C drew 5-5 on the road against Galleywood A.  Donald beat Gary Brignall 3-1 in his opening match of the evening and went on to beat both James Hicks and Peter Barnett in three.  Despite losing his opener against Hicks. Daniel Patynski went on to beat Brignall and Barrett by the same 3-1 scoreline.  Hicks recovered from 2-1 down to beat David Gatheral in the final contest of the evening.

Standings div 1: 1: Chelmsford A 64 points (9 matches)), 2 . OCA A 59 points (from 8 matches), 3: Danbury C 55  points (10 matches).

Division 2

Hatfield Peverel A sit top of division 2 by five points having played a game more than their closest contenders Chelmsford C, Alastair Piper hit his third treble of the season as the leaders beat Maldon A by a 6-4 scoreline on Tuesday night.   After beating Hamish Innes 3-0, Piper was made to work hard for his treble by Colin Napper and Chris Hancox who both took the Hatfield ace to five games.  Innes earned two wins on the night for Maldon and ended Martin Archie’s run of 10 successive victories with a 3-0 win.  Team captain Waseem Qureshi led the way with his first hat-trick of the season as Chelmsford C closed the gap on the leaders with an 8-2 victory over Danbury F.  Qureshi beat Gus Heath and Steve Buer 3-0 before edging past John Tendler 13-11 in the deciding game of their contest.  Teammate Harrison Hill also scored a treble which included 3-2 wins over both Tendler and Heath.

OCA B earned a fine 7-3 home victory over third placed Writtle C with Mick Richardson winning three matches and Rob Burton two. Richardson came from a game down to beat John Parodi 3-1 but was then well tested by John Webber who he edged 11-9 in the fifth.  Webber handed Burton his only loss of the evening with a 3-1 victory and went on to beat Michael Hayes 3-0.  Danbury E moved into fifth place with an 8-2 win over bottom of the table Chelmsford D.  Tim Cramphorn secured his second treble of the season but teammates Dick Wyman and Tony Forster were both prevented from joining him in the ‘hat-trick club’ by two 3-2 losses to Chelmsford’s Dusan Doszkoty.  If you are scheduled to play in a match against Doskoty you way want to put your late night plans on hold - eleven of his 24 individual matches (46%) have gone to five games so far this season which is a high for division 2 players (but not the league - see division 3!).  Doszkoty came from 2-0 down to beat Forster and 2-1 down to get the better of Wyman, while player of the match Cramphorn also had to overturn a 2-1 deficit in his match with Mike Johnston.

David Gatheral scored three wins as Danbury D beat clubmates Danbury G 7-3 in a fixture which appeared to start fast and end slow.  Four of the first five games were settled by a 3-0 scoreline as the D-team took a 3-2 lead at the halfway stage before all five of the remaining matches went the five-game distance.  Eamonn Hall started the string of five-game matches by fighting back from 2-0 down to beat Merv Perriman, with Hall and Gatheral then bouncing back from a 2-1 deficit to take the doubles encounter against Denis Crapnell and Robin Armstrong.  Gatheral and Armstrong then continued to dance into the night with yet another five game match, before Crapnell did unto Hall what Hall had done unto Perriman.  To cap a fiercely competitive second half of the evening, Dave Meah decided he wanted some of the five-game action and turned a 1-2 scoreline against Perriman into a 3-2 victory.

Standings div 2: 1: Hatfield Peverel A 63 points (from 10 matches), 2: Chelmsford C 58 points (9 matches). 3: Writtle C 53 points (10 matches),

Division 3

After tasting defeat for the first time last week, league leaders Galleywood B were held to a 5-5 draw by Buttsbury A who moved into third position.  Buttsbury’s Jamie Elliott extended his season record to 18 wins with victories over Gary Brignall, John Holland and Mark Glenister - however Elliott was taken to multiple five-game matches for the first time this season.  Elliot beat Brignall 3-1 in his opening contest before squeezing past Holland 11-9 in the decider of his second.  Glenister went toe-to-toe with Elliott in their contest with Elliot putting a 14-12 fourth game loss behind him to win the decider by a comfortable 11-5 scoreline.  Evie Knaapen earned two 3-0 wins for Buttsbury after she had dropped her first match of the night to Holland who rallied from 2-1 down to win 11-9 in the fifth.  OCA C remain second in the table despite a 5-5 home draw against Writtle D in a match which saw Richard Baxter earn his second successive hat-trick and fourth of the season.  Baxter’s three wins look like a tough evening’s work - he beat each of Bob Garson, Malcolm Henstock and Trevor Collin 3-2.  Collin secured a 3-2 victory of his own during the evening having found himself 2-0 down to Richard Upson.  Upson has a remarkable record of 13 five-game matches out of his 21 matches played this season accounting for an eye watering 62% of his matches!

Danbury K leapfrogged opponents Chelmsford E with a 7-3 home victory which saw Dave Hancox’s first treble of the season. Hancox beat each of Andy Swales, Alesha Ellis-Austin and James Grimston over four games while teammate Dave Oxley-Goody earned a brace.  Both of Chelmsford’s Ellis-Austin’s wins were over five games which extends her record to winning each of her last five matches which have gone to a decider.  Three wins for Ian Whiteside and a double for Alan Scammell weren’t quite enough to earn Danbury H the honours as they were held to a 5-5 draw by Danbury J.  Whiteside’s opening contest of the night with Peter Hance looked to be his most taxing of the fixture as Hance fought back from 2-0 down before Whiteside was able to secure the decider.  Scammell’s two wins were both over five-games - despite a 2-0 lead against Terry Hyand the victory was only secured by a 12-10 scoreline in the fifth, and John Robinson had held a 2-1 lead until Scammell turned on the afterburner.  Scammell’s afterburner may have malfunctioned in his final match of the night against Hance as he saw a 2-1 lead disappear into the smoke.

Standings div 3: 1: Galleywood B 65 points (from 9 matches), 2: OCA C 53 points (9 matches), 3: Buttsbury A 49 points (8 matches).

Division 4

With the top two teams in division 4 not in action this week, Maldon B moved into third place with a fine 8-2 victory at home to Buttsbury B.  Brian Riedling and Chris Ravenhill scored three wins apiece for the hosts though the result could have been very different had the two Maldon players not have won the deciding game in the three matches which went the distance during the evening.  With the fixture finely poised at a scoreline of 2-2, Riedling and Ravenhill may have knocked the stuffing out of the visitors with back-to-back 3-2 wins as the home team went on to take the remaining six matches.  Highwood A also made their move and now sit in fourth position following an 8-2 win over Hatfield Peverel D.  Melanie Bonnett and Roger Patient both scored trebles while Keith Fitz-John would have joined them had it not been for a Bob Hillis comeback from 2-1 down.  Bonnet was well tested by David Benstead in a match which went to five games while Hillis teamed with Samuel White in the doubles to take Peverel’s only other point during the evening.

James Brooks secured his first treble of the season but saw his Hatfield Peverel E team fall to a 6-4 loss on the road to OCA D.  Brooks won in four games against each of David Newman, David Bishop and Farooq Ahmed and teamed with Philip West to win the doubles encounter - also in four.

Standings div 4: 1: Galleywood C 54 points (from 7 matches), 2: Chelmsford G 50 points (8 matches), 3: Maldon B 46 points (from 7 matches).

Division 5

Division 5 leaders Danbury M extended their record to nine wins from nine fixtures this season with an 8-2 home win over Maldon C.  Graham Naggs was the sole treble scorer with victories over Shirley Carroll in three games, Ross Wheeler in four and James Raymond in five (having trailed 2-1).  Steve and Oliver Martin backed Naggs up with two wins apiece - both had their opportunities of a treble of wins while competing in fifth game deciders. Raymond beat Steve Martin 11-8 in the deciding game before Shirley Carroll ousted Oliver Martin 14-12 in the fifth of their contest.  Maldon’s Raymond played in three five-gamers on the night.

Mark Nolan took his individual record to thirteen wins in fourteen contests this season with another hat-trick in Chelmsford J’s 5-5 draw at Highwood B.  Nolan’s biggest test of the evening came in his opening contest with Martin Goddard which he won 11-7 in the deciding game.  Chelmsford’s Elliot Hawthorne chipped in with a win but would perhaps have hoped for more having fallen at the last hurdle in five-game losses to both Keith Pallett and Martin Goddard.  Third placed Galleywood D fell to a 6-4 loss at fourth placed Chelmsford H despite a hat-trick of victories for Ron Salton.  Salton beat James Grindlay and Shenbing Zhu in four games, Jacqui Smith in three and teamed with Wayne Smithies for a 3-2 win over Grindlay and Smith in the doubles.  Smith had earlier fought back from 2-1 down to beat Smithies in the doubles.

Anglia Ruskin University continued their recent upturn in form with an 8-2 victory over Hatfield Peverel F.  Kelvin Edeh and Douglas Bawuah won all three of their matches for the second successive week with teammate Connor Case securing his first CDTTL win in his debut season.  Case’s 3-1 victory over Martin Kilbey was even more impressive as it came after the disappointment of being beaten 14-12 in the deciding game with Alastair Brown.  Bawuah and Edeh teamed up to beat Brown and Peter Hughes 3-2 in the doubles having been 2-1 down.  Writtle F beat the two players of OCA E 7-3 with two wins apiece for Michael Anthony and Paul Aarons.  Aarons beat Stuart Wintle 3-2 having trailed 2-1 and went one better against Matthew Porter having been 2-0 down.  Wintle and Porter combined to beat Aarons and Anthony 3-0 in the doubles before Wintle earned his sole win of the night - a 3-1 victory over Colin Griffiths.

Standings div 5: 1: Danbury M 68 points (from 9 matches), 2: Chelmsford J 51 points (9 matches), 3: Galleywood D 49 points (10 matches).

Chelmsford Junior League division 1A

The Chelmsford Eagles moved into second position in the CJL1A with a 5-0 victory at the Buttbury Bears on Friday night.  Kuzey Musabek and Adhuna Das both won each of their matches 3-0 against opponents Thomas Lewis and Callum Walker.

Standings CJL 1A: CHAMPIONS: CTTC Cougars 29 points (from 7 matches), 2: CTTC Eagles 17 points (from 7 matches).

Chelmsford Junior League division 1C

CJL1C Champions the Hutton Harriers cruised to a 5-0 win over bottom of the table Buttsbury Bats. Jonny Pocock earned his first double of the season while Archie Giles’ two wins moved him to six wins out of eight for the season.

Standings CJL 1C: CHAMPIONS: Hutton Harriers 30 points (from 7 matches), 2: CTTC Rhinos 19 points (7 matches).

Handicap Cup first round

Chelmsford E beat Buttsbury C 5-3 to set up a second round home tie against OCA C.  Alesha Ellis-Austin (41) and James Grimston (50) won two matches apiece with the closest match of the night being Ellis-Austin’s opening victory over Joseph Hutt 26-24, 21-23, 22-20.

A new (possibly occasional) section which I hope is of interest to you.  I’m the type of person who hears about a statistic and cannot help but to investigate further - in the Chelmsford members chat group we’ve been very aware of our D team’s Dusan Doszkoty’s involvement in five-game matches this season.  In fact, Dusan didn’t have a great record to start with - seven of his first nine individual matches went to five games at the start of the season and he didn’t win any of them!  I’m pleased to report that Dusan won his eighth encounter which went to five games bucking that trend and this week won an additional two five-gamers in the fixture with Danbury E.  Seeing this statistic made me curious - which players across the CDTTL have the highest percentage of five-gamers? So without further ado, please find a list of players who if you see in the opposition line-up you might want to consider messaging home “could be a late one tonight”!
