WEEK 8 REPORT WINTER LEAGUE 18-19

     Week 8 Reports

Premier Division

Rawreth A and particularly Minda Sinkus were in ruthless form this week as they swept aside Warehouse A 9-0, Sinkus only dropping a maximum of five points in any one leg on the evening.

Unfortunately for Rawreth A two of their closest rivals, Hullbridge A and Thorpe Bay A, were in equally stingy mood as they both also recorded 9-0 victories over Warehouse A and Hockley A respectively. Seasoned campaigners Dave Bowles and John Poysden (pictured) pipping their team mates to the man of the match awards in those matches.

There was a close game this week with Brand Identity A coming out on top over Stanford le Hope A with a 5-4 win. Rahul Sharma continues his good form and was unbeaten on the night for the home team while there were wins for all the Brand Identity players, Barrie Delf, Chris Jacob and Richard Jackman.

Injury to Thorpe Bay B regular Kieran Skeggs meant that a two-man team arrived to play an in-form Rayleigh Mill side this week. Peter Radford picked up the man of the match award with two wins but was pushed all of the way by Liam Squirrell who earlier in the night had picked up good wins against Colin Chatfield and Duncan Taylor. The latter a great battle with some long rallies of defence v patient attack with 4 of the 5 games going to deuce.

Kieran Lally played his second game of the season and it was his second hattrick of the season as he teamed up with Norbert Fullerton and Django Fung for Hullbridge B to overcome Hadleigh Forum A 8-1. Dave Bassett with the win for Forum over Fullerton.

Division 1

Lentern A top the group this week after a 8-1 win over Rawreth C and have a game in hand over joint leaders Hockley B. Solid performances from Elaine Sayer and Gus Heath (playing up in his second game of the week) with maximums and two points added by Steve Barker ensured that they kept up with the pace. Garry Hartgrove played well to win the consolation point for Rawreth, leaving them mid-table.

Hockley B won by the same score line, 8-1, over the Lentern B team. Alex Barnetson and Dave Colwill were both unbeaten on the night, with Josh Copeland adding two points. Gus Heath scored the consolation win over Josh to add the only point for Lentern, with their A team hoping they could have inflicted more damage. However, the only other game looking likely to go to the Lentern team was Gus’s game against Dave where he took a 2-1 lead, but lost the 4th and 5th games 15-13 and 11-6.

Hadleigh Forum B occupy third spot in the table tahnks to a 6-3 win over Hockley C. John Tendler returned to form with a hat trick and was supported in a good all round team performance by Tony Jacks with two and Dave Woolmer with 1. Dan Patynski put up some resistance taking two points for Hockley and Callum Turner took 1 point for the Hockley total

Hullbridge D lost ground after being on the wrong end of a 9-0 surprise victory for Invicta A who are now on level points with Hullbridge after a poor start. Steve Marr (POTM), Mike Piper and Tony Ayliffe all scored maximums for Invicta, leaving Andy Seaman, Rod Maclennan and Dawn Baldry, on her first appearance this season, all empty-handed, in a match where no games went to 5 sets.

Brand Identity B scored a resounding 8-1 win over bottom-club Rawreth D, who were only able to field two players. Mike Grout and Dave Jacob scored maximums with Sean McNabb adding two points. Caroline Cole scored the consolation point against Sean for the Rawreth side.

In the final game this week, Customs A scored a 6-3 win over Hullbridge E. Roy Thomas, Dale Gutteridge and Brian Rackham all scored two points for the away side for the win, however no-one was able to beat POTM, Ben Matthews, from the Hullbridge E side who took all 3 points and games on offer, including the scalp of Roy Thomas in a 3-0 win.

Division 2 Report

With fellow title contenders Stanford Le Hope B having a postponed match this week, Hadleigh Forum B took the opportunity to steam ahead at the top of the table, thanks to a fine 7 - 2 home win over Brand Identity C. Paul Fawell was again Forum’s star, winning all his games. The visitors seem to have unearthed a talented player, though, in Kelly Yuenyongpknan. Both the home side’s Graham Farmer and Mark Everard succumbed to Brand Identity’s new find.

There were a couple of close 5 – 4 matches this week. An unbeaten performance by Hockley D’s Gary Linzell gave his side the edge on their visit to Rawreth E. Jan Thorpe and Bradley Nunn won two each for the home side.

In a similar vein, thanks to a Tamas Mezo hat trick (and aided by one win apiece from Ro Brett and Graham Back) Warehouse C overcame visitors Rawreth G 5 – 4. George Davis and Andy Deadman each won a brace for Rawreth.

Wakering were a little too strong for their young hosts at Hullbridge F. A maximum from Paul England, two from Stewart Mills and one from Nigel Cook took them to a 6 – 3 win. The Hullbridge trio of Ben Hoskins, Joe Buscombe and Josh Jones won one each for Hullbridge.

Hat tricks from POM Andy Humphris and David Barnes inspired Invicta B to a 7 – 2 home win over Rawreth F. Botond Mezo and Keanan Ford won one each for Rawreth.

Division 3 Report

With one result still to come at the time of writing, which won’t affect the top positions, there are new leaders in Div 3 with Customs B powering to the top after an 8-1 win against Hullbridge H. Last week’s leaders Hullbridge G slumped to their second successive 5-4 defeat, this time at the hands of Invicta C, who themselves move up to third.

The Customs team of Mark Rose, Richard Kidd and Amar Al-Soufi proved too strong for the Hullbridge youngsters with only one game going beyond three sets but Joey Page pulled off an impressive straight set victory against Amar, whilst Ben Cannon didn’t quite have the firepower to overcome Richard Kidd losing 20-18 in the fifth set.

Hullbridge G’s form has certainly been up and down this season having lost four of their seven games but still sitting second in the Division. There may be better times around the corner however, as debutant Lindsay Johnson-Farge overcame jetlag to record a hat trick against Invicta which bodes well for the rest of the season. Invicta provided a good all round team performance with two wins apiece for Chris Gregory and John Golding and one for Keith Baxter. Sue Reece got the other point for Hullbridge whilst John won the deciding ninth match against Ann Lane.

Stanford Le Hope D edged another 5-4 result against Hockley F for whom Paul Henlen, playing up from the G team, recorded a MOTM hat trick. Graham Gregory got their other point but braces from Tony Papasifakis and Vaughan Chambers and one from Mandy Till saw Stanford home. Tony won the ninth game decider against Alwine Jarvis. Stanford jump to 5th as a result.

Finally there was good news for bottom of the table Warehouse D who thumped Rawreth H 8-1 and moved up to tenth in the table. Rawreth drop to the bottom. Graham Back edged Joe Bennett for the MOTM honours whilst Steve Higgins weighed in with two losing to Robert Bates to give Rawreth their consolation point.
