RESSC, completed their programme with two wins against Rawreth F 6-3 and Stanford B 5-4, maintaining their 100% winning record in the league. These matches were significant, somewhat ironically, for the performances of their opponents in particular Mike Hayes of Rawreth and Robert Salvage of Stanford. Mike takes the distinction of being the first player in the league to record a hat trick against them defeating Bob Skews, John Holland and Ron Coutts without dropping a set. In doing so he inflicted a first defeat of the season on Bob thus ruining his 100% record. In their final match against Stanford Rob Salvage repeated this feat defeating Richard Gill, Mike Worship and Ron Coutts and in doing so they became the team to come closest to beating RESSC losing 5-4 in both their matches. They might even have achieved the win if Richard hadn’t come from 2-1 down to beat John Handscombe in five sets. Wakering finished third in the league and completed their games with an 8-1 win against Hullbridge A. Apart from an initial win for Dan Stewart against Stewart Mills it was pretty straight forward for Wakering with Paul and Zac England recording hat tricks to go alongside Stewart’s brace. Rawreth F picked up a good win against Canvey B beating them 6-3 thanks to a hat trick from young Cleon Fernandes. He was backed up by a brace from Adi Kamma and one win from Jan Thorpe. Terry Giddens picked up two wins for the Islanders and Des Duffield one, but there was no joy for Kevin Walsingham. Player of the Week – Mike Hayes Team of the Week – RESSC Division 2 Table

They have led the table all season and suffered only one defeat along the way. This is a just reward for the consistency shown throughout the season by their 3 main protagonists, Jeremy Giffin, Tony Molisso and skipper Ron Rogerson, each of whom has achieved winning averages of over 80%. Good support has also been provided when needed by John George, Ben Brown and Neil Klyman. As far as the action this week is concerned, Invicta ‘B’ knew that they could not afford drop many, if any, points when they faced Stanford ‘C.’ Despite a fine maximum from Steve Lennox, a brace from Sarah Ball and a single win from Mike Keeble, their 6/3 win left the door open for their title rivals. Vaughan Chambers was the best player for Stanford with 2 wins and David Arnett added the third point. This meant that Hockley needed 7 points or more when they faced struggling Hadleigh Forum ‘D’ at the end of the week. Their cause was helped by Forum only being able to field 2 players on the night. The first game of the night proved to be the closest with Dean Johnson taking Ron Rogerson all the way before going down 6-11 in the fifth set. Thereafter it was all one way with every game decided in straight sets in Hockley’s favour. Tony Molisso was POM with Jeremy Giffin and Ron also unbeaten in the 9-0 win that clinched the title. Also, this week, there was a 7-2 win for MegaZone over Hullbridge B. Richard Kidd led the way for MegaZone with an unbeaten performance, but he was made to fight all the way by Alex Deacon who won the first 2 sets before eventually going down 11-3, 15-13, 8-11, 8-11, 8-11. Richard was well supported by Graham Back and Ro Brett who won 2 games each, but both fell in straight sets to Alex. With their hopes of winning the league title having gone, Invicta B finished their season with an 8-1 win in a rearranged match against Hockley E. David Barnes and Steve Lennox were both unbeaten and Mike Keeble added two wins but lost out to Ben Cook in the first game of the night. Finally, due to a mix-up over venue availability, Rawreth G had to concede their match against Hockley E. |
