Having played for other TT clubs in the late 1950s and 60s -- Earley Home Guard being the main one -- Terry joined our Club in 1973, when it was known as Berks (County) Sports TTC.
Throughout the following 15 seasons, Terry was a regular player -- mainly in the lower divisions, but he also made a few Division 1 appearances during the Club's previous spell in the top division.
Terry's style of play and the perished rubber on one side of his almost unique and idiosyncratic bat made him an awkward opponent even for the best players, as evidenced by his victory over a young Hari Gehlot in a Division 5 match in 1980, and an even younger Ben Johnson in his final season in 1988.
Terry was something of a table tennis mentor to me in my early years at Berks Sports. We were team-mates for seven seasons prior to his retirement from playing. Terry and I remained firm friends ever since, and I know he continued to follow the Club's upward progression with a keen interest in recent years.
Of our current members, I suspect only a couple will remember Terry as a player. But several from other clubs will surely recall their encounters with him -- and that bat!
Terry played in well over 200 matches for our Club; he served as Chairman and Secretary, as well as a Team Captain on various occasions.
The funeral is on Tuesday 8 October at 11.00 at Easthampstead Park. More details on request.
Our condolences to Terry's partner, Rose, who was his rock over the past fifteen years or so.
