Match Report
Well the final league before the Christmas break. John, Mike and Cris for the C team and Jes Eason, Mark Bullion and Phil Jones for Tilehurst. With Tilehurst sitting at the foot of the table it was important that Sonning picked up as many points from tonight’s match.
John led the team in the first match against Jes. The first five set match of the evening. Jes took the first game before Johns struck back to win the next two. John won game three 12-10 which we thought was going to be pivotal. However, Jes with his steady, steady play came back to win 11-3 and 11-6.
Cris faced Mark who was very voracious throughout. Cris took the match in five games winning the fifth game 11-3 with a couple of net cords for good measure and perhaps an edge?
Mike then took on Phil who John and I saw had the best average of their team. Phil took the first two games before Mike pulled a game back to reduce the arrears. However, Phil was too strong and won in four games. So Sonning were 2-1 after the first round of singles and that was as good as it got. John lost in three games to Mark. Mike then faced Jes and took the first game with good control hitting. Jes came back steady chopping continuously and Mike not quite executing his smashes. Cris then had a long five game battle with Phil. Cris led two games to love and then Phil struck back. Cris led 9-7 in game 5 only to lose 11-9. Sheer frustration on not getting the job done!
The doubles came and went quite quickly.
The final round of singles saw both Mike and Cris lose in three games to Mark and Jes. Meanwhile, John had another five set match with Phil. John took the first and third games 11-9 and 11-8. So again John led but could not gain the victory to make the scoreline a little more respectable.
So all in all a difficult and disappointing evening and we know there is work to do in the New Year!
