Match Report
For Sonning Brett, Harry and Dave lined up against Dave Edwards, Terry Hardie and Chris Webb.
Sonning were attempting to reverse 8-2 scoreline earlier in the season.
Brett opened against Dave who he beat earlier in the season. Unfortunately there was no repeat as Dave romped home in three straight games.
Harry took on Terry and won the first 8 points of the first game before Terry won a point. Harry took the first game 11-7, whilst in the second game Terry edged it 12-10. Harry then managed to limit Terry use of his strong forehand smashes to win games 3 and 4 11-8 and 13-11. A good result.
Match 3 saw Dave take on Chris in a match which lasted 36 minutes!. This was without any doubt Dave’s best performance of the season without winning! The first two games went to Chris 15-13. Dave at two games down could have capitulated but no he steadied the ship to take the next two games 11=8 and 11-7. So all set for a decider. It was Chris who went into an early lead and looked much mor positive. Dave stuck with but was just beaten 11-7. A great effort!
Match 4 saw Harry take on Dave Edwards. This was probably the most routine of matches as Harry won in three straight games.
In Match 5 Brett was taking on Chris. Brett again struggled as Chris chopped and chopped to very good effect. Chris also managed a good number of returns of smashes. As a result the Mach was lost in three games.
The final second round of singles saw Dave take on Terry. Another stirring performance by Dave, who took the first game 12-10. However, Dave could not quite keep the pressure on and Terry took the next three games to clim victory.
The doubles was a cracking match. Brett and Dave faced Terry and Dave. In the first two games only two points separated the teams, both winning one game each. Sonning won game 3 and in game 4 had match points at 10-9, 11-10, 13-12 before Tidmarsh levelled the match at 2-2 by winning this game15-13. The 5 game seemed anticlimactic as Tidmarsh won 11-6. Again a great effort.
The final round of singles for each, Harry struggled much like Brett against Chris Webb. Chris was returning the fast serves and repeated smashes by Harry which wore Harry down, so another 3-0 win for Chris.
Dave then took on Dave Edwards and the former again took the first game. Thereafter, Dave Edwards seemed in control but Dave was striking the ball very well and won a number of points with his forehand smashes working well. Dave Edwards won in four sets but Dave Chard played 18 games last night and is probably feeling it today!
The final match saw Brett and Terry in opposition. Brett edged the first 15-13 before imploding to only win a single point in the second game. Matters improved in game 3 for Brett as he narrowly lost the third 9-11. Brett finally started hitting the ball well to recover and strode to victory 11-7 and 11-4.
So a defeat but three points won. Again it could have been closer.
