Match Report

Grant was making both his debut for Sonning Sports and also in the Reading League. He was joined in the team by Brett and Harry.

Both Grant and Brett had played the same Kingfisher team in the Wokingham & Bracknell League last week.

The match started with a win for Grant over Huzeyfe 3-0. I can’t say anything more as I only arrived when Brett was 2-1 down against Eyup. Brett was 2-0 down but came back to win in 5 sets. He was not sure how he managed to achieve that! But an important win to take Sonning into a 2-0 lead. Harry then took on Aydin who from statistics looked to be their strongest player.  Harry with new bat, struggled to control his attacking shots and whilst coming close to winning the second game, lost in 3 sets.

The second round of singles saw Grant beat Eyup in four sets and he looked comfortably in control. Harry then took on Huzeyfe who was frustrating Harry using his anti spin bat. Huzeyfe was also strong on his forehand. Harry succumbed in four sets but expressed his disappointment as he advised that he had previously beaten Huzeyfe! The last of send set of singles brought Brett up against Aydin. Whilst the first game slipped away from Brett quickly, he competed well in games 2 and 3 but did not quite get over the line! So 3-3 after 6 matches.

The doubles saw the partnership of Grant and Brett take on Huzeyfe and Eyup. A comprehensive win for the Sonning pair. May this long continue as the doubles is so important. So 4-3 going into the final round of singles.

Harry to Eyup to 5 games but lost out, as did Grant playing the formidable Aydin. So to get a draw we needed Brett to work his miracles against Huzeyfe, who he had never previously beaten. Suffice to say Brett was confused by the way he should play Huzeye. Regrettably the match only last 3 sets!

So in summary a match where we nearly managed a draw. However, I would suggest that this was a much improved performance by a stronger B team. We have got 4 points and it is a sound start.

Tilehurst Methodists A team next week which will be perhaps tougher. So let’s keep going and challenging all in this tough division.
