Match Report
This was a match between the two teams that finished ninth and tenth in the league last season but retained their status in Division 3. Both teams have been strengthened. OLOP with Louise Forster and Sonning with Sukhi and Grant. Jamie Smith and (Alona who was not playing) have both stepped up their games as is shown in their statistics.
To the match, Grant started off against Louise and this was a closely fought 5 game battle, before Grant came out on top to gain a valuable point for the team. Next up was Harry and as we are accustomed, this was another 5 game encounter. Patrick went two games up only for Harry to level. In game 5, Patrick regained control and constructed his points well to close out the match. Sukhi then faced the vastly improved James! Sukhi took the first game but James took the next three games, with some very strong forehand play. So after the first round of singles OLOP lead 2-1.
In the second round of singles, Grant made a strong showing against Patrick who obviously had difficulties against a fellow left hander! Grant won in three comfortable games. Set 5 saw Louise play Sukhi. Louise was too strong for Sukhi and used her forehand to very good effect and won in three games. In the final second set of singles Harry took on James. Again we thought it was going to five games but James won in the fourth game 13-11 as Harry had game points and James had set points! So OLOP lead 4-2.
Brett partnered Grant in the doubles and maintained their 100% record this season winning in four games.
The final round of singles saw Sukhi facing Patrick and winning in the fourth game to level the sets at 4-4. Step up Grant to face James. James managed a very important win for his team and demonstrated how much he has improved this season! In the fifth game James won 11-9 to clinch the 5th point for OLOP. The final match was between Harry and Louise. Louise won this in three games and thus claimed victory for OLOP.
The team felt they should have done better but it is another 4 points and we look forward to the challenge of Tilehurst Methodists next week.
