Match Report

The fixture against Tilehurst Methodist B is always an enjoyable night and follows a recent history in divisions 3 & 4 this time played at Sonning's Pearson Hall. The match started out between the best averaging players, Grant for Sonning and Nigel Rowland. Grant started off more solidly and with long rallies and both working hard, games went each way. As Nigel found form, so followed the points, games 4 and 5 going his way for the win.  Sonning 0-1.
Brett played Martin in the 2nd and although starting with many missed shots finally found the table to take the next three games. Sonning 1-1
Himanshu vs Patrick was a closer match. Himanshu probably wasn't warmed up enough and missed many of his trademark shots. Games were close, but Patrick nudged them all. Sonning 1-2
Brett Played Nigel next but started slow.  Nigel getting a 2 game lead before a bit of an epic third game where Brett came back from 10-6 down to win but not enough as Nigel settled and took the fourth.
Grant's match appeared as though luck followed Patrick with edges and net tape prominent. Games were tight but Patrick winning the crucial points at the end. Himanshu's matches against Martin seem to favour his style, and the game went to Himanshu following a fightback from Martin in the 3rd.
Doubles with  Brett/Grant v Nigel/Patrick. A higher quality doubles match with long Rallies that went Sonning's way. Now 3-4 the final singles round started and although Brett started well against Pat he was too consistent and won in four.
Himanshu's match went against the bookies favourite. Nigel started strongly but Himanshu suspecting catastrophe played an inspiring second game. Nigel responded winning the third but started to tire and Himanshu found the style of game that worked against Nigel's consistency and spin and won games 4 and 5.

Overall an enjoyable evening with lots of quality table tennis. A draw seemed the right result 5-5 with a notable performance from Patricks treble.
