Match Report
For OLOP, Simon Brookes, Mark Carless and Jacek Piechokhi. Jacek was a new signing in January coming into the match with 12 wins and only one game dropped. Some record.
Sonning had Grant, Brett and Himanshu.
Brett opened against Jacek. Brett was well beaten in three games and we could all see that Jacek was a great addition to the OLOP squad. He also bought his family who were very vociferous in their support. Brett suggested he should have bought his family up as well!
Grant was second up against Mark. In the autumn they had had a tight match and this followed the same pattern. Mark took the first two games 11-6 and 12-10 and then Grant struck back to take the third game. In the fourth game Grant led 9-8 before some strong serving by Mark saw him close out the set.
Himanshu was up next against skipper Simon. The first game went to Simon 11-9 after both players were using smashes to win the points, probably too often. There was a comment made to the effect, ‘ could we see a rally.’ Himanshu came back after guidance from Brett to take the next three games and secure our first point of the evening.
The next round of singles saw Brett take on Mark. Another quick set for Brett as Mark dominated and with the amount of topspin used managed to win 4 points in one game with the net cord favouring him! Brett was not his usual self I. The first two games whilst the third game was much tighter.
Himanshu them had the task of facing Jacek. The first game was tight as the scores reached 8-8 before Jacek found another gear to take game one. It looked fairly routine as Jacek took games 2 & 3 comfortably.
Grant in the final second round of singles took on Simon. Grant and won in four games. In the first game Grant was 6-4 down and then won the next seven points to take the game 11-6. Grant took the second game whilst Simon won the third. A tight fourth game saw Grant close the set. So 6-2 to OLOP.
The doubles saw Grant and Cris take on Jacek and Mark. This match was over in 3 games with the side and top spin services of Jacek winning a number of points.
The final round of singles saw Himanshu beaten in three games by Mark. Brett then took on Simon and this was the only 5 game set of the evening. Simon took the first, Brett found his form to win games two and three. Simon fought back to take the fourth 11-8 before Brett took early control in the fifth game leading 8-2. Simon fought hard back to 8-9 down before Brett to some relief won a third point for Sonning Sports.
A good evening and a beer afterwards was enjoyed. It will be interesting to see where Jacek plays next year! I say sign him up for Sonning Sports!
