Rawreth scored their fourth win of the Season in the first division of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League – a convincing 9-1 victory over Chelmsford B. Kim Shead and Charles Sweeny both secured hat-tricks whilst Rob Shrimpton was on target for the losers with a 7-11, 11-6, 18-16, 12-10 win over Babul McCleod.

Chelmsford A impressed by beating their colleagues Chelmsford B 9-1 in the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. Casey Cross and Eren Gozcu were both undefeated with Casey Cross wining all three of his matches deep in the fifth end. Casey defeated Simon Jarvis (11-8, 8-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-8), Rob Shrimpton (11-9, 8-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-7) and finally Victor Chan (8-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-2, 13-11, a very hard earned maximum.

ARU Rhinos, sixth in division five won the closest contest in last week’s Handicap Cup action in the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. Their side of Douglas Bowuah (handicap of 30), Mubarak Sulaiman (28) and Jordan Corbett (24) kicked the first division stars – OCs A into touch 5-4.

The Chelmsford League Individual Championships will be held from Friday 31 January 2020 to Sunday 2 February 2020 at Hylands School in Chelmsford with Finals Night being at the Old Chelmsfordians on Monday 10 February 2020.

Please note that the Junior Handicap Singles event will be run separately on Friday 24 January 2020 at Chelmsford TTC (Chelmsford Sports & Athletics Centre, Salerno Way, Chelmsford CM1 2EH).

Eric Green has been having a fine Season in division one of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League as can be illustrated by his record of 76 %. He was unbeaten as Danbury A defeated Rawreth 7-3. Green beat Charles Sweeny 4-11, 11-7, 11-5, 4-11, 11-5. OCs A did well to beat Liberal 6-4, good going as Paul Davison won his three singles for Liberal.

Danbury A have jumped into second place in the first division of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. Gary Young, Dave Richardson and Daniel Young were all undefeated as they scored their fifth win of the Season, an emphatic 10-0 victory over Chelmsford C. Gary Young completed their victory with a last gasp 11-6, 7-11, 9-11, 11-7, 14-12 success against Wiktor Delimat.

Paul Davison was on good form for Liberal in division one of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis  League and his hat-trick enabled his side to draw against Chelmsford B.  Davison beat Rob Shrimpton 11-8, 11-9, 11-8 and Simon Jarvis 9-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-9.

The division two match between Writtle B and Danbury C was a good one in the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League and it finished tied at 5-5. Paul Sturton won his three singles beating Steve Buer (11-2, 11-6, 7-11, 11-6), Chris Buer (11-8, 11-5, 11-5) and Gus Heath (11-6, 11-4, 14-12). Three good wins !. Chelmsford D had both Jarek Pietraszuk and Victor Chan undefeated as they beat OCs C 8-2.

Promoted Danbury B have made a very good start to their division one campaign. With Sam Lowman leading the way they scored their third win of the Season, beating Chelmsford C 7-3. Lowman with an impressive 80 % record won his three singles beating Waseem Qureshi (11-9, 11-8, 11-7), Mike Johnston (11-9, 11-9, 11-&) and Wiktor Delimat (11-8, 12-14, 11-4, 11-4).

Maldon A continue to carry all before them in the first division of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. Setting a pace which Eliud Kipchoge might be proud they have scored 47 points out of 50. Alex Abbott, Trevor Lloyd and John Poysden despatched Chelmsford C 10-0.

The first division of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League produced some top class action this week with the match between Chelmsford A and OCs A topping the bill. There were surprises galore. OCs’ Paul Lucas powered his way past James Denyer 11-5, 11-8, 11-7 but Lucas was in turn beaten by Casey Cross 11-4, 11-7, 18-20, 8-11, 10-12.

With James Hicks injured Galleywood A have done well to secure the services of Peter Barrett and he was undefeated as they beat Danbury B 7-3. Barrett impressed by beating Sam Lowman 7-11, 11-8, 11-6, 11-6. Lowman in turn made his mark with a quick fire 11-7, 11-7, 11-4 victory over Steve Kerns whist Kerns prevailed with a last gasp 11-4, 8-11, 11-13, 11-2, 14-12 victory against Dan Anderson in the closest game of the evening.

Chelmsford A returned to winning ways in the first division of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. With an unbeaten James Denyer in their side they beat Writle A 6-4. Casey Cross won twice for Chelmsford and just missed out against Duncan Taylor 8-11, 11-9, 4-11, 11-9, 15-17.

Division One of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League has started with a flourish. Champions Maldon A showed that they will again be the team to beat as they hammered Chelmsford B 10-0. Alex Abbott, Trevor Lloyd and John Poysden carried all before them. Improving Victor Chan fared best as he pushed Alex Abbott to five ends before succumbing 3-11, 6-11, 11-6, 12-10, 4-11.

The Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League Committee are deeply saddened to announce that Kim Hayden died on 06 August 2019, aged 55 after battling illness for a number of years. She passed away in Hospital having been surrounded by her family and her partner Tina. Brother Peter commented that “she was a class act, hilariously funny to the end and able to make what is a terribly sad time as easy as it can possibly be”.

Hatfield Peverel have won the 2018-19 Ladies Knock Out Cup Final in the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. Julie Johnson and Jan Fuller ran out 3-1 winners against Maldon. Julie Johnson defeated Kelly Yuen 11-3, 11-9, 13-11 and Dawn Baldry by the roller-coaster scoreline of 3-11, 12-10, 8-11, 12-10, 11-3 to give Hatfield Peverel the ascendancy. The improving Kelly Yuen made her mark with a fine 11-9, 11-9, 11-9 win over Jan Fuller.

Writtle A completed their Season in style in division 1A of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League by scoring a superb 8-2 win over second placed Chelmsford A. Make no mistake about it this was a top performance against a Chelmsford side containing both Wal Bada and Edward Ogbebor.

1967 and 1968 Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League Mens Doubles Champion Mick Buckley died at the start of March, aged 85. He is best known as President of the Colchester League, a position he held since 2002. Mick won his Chelmsford Mens Doubles titles with West Ham and Newcastle United football legend Vic Keeble and he was also the Mens Doubles Champion in Colchester (twice) in 1974 and 1975 partnered by Rob Milne and in Clacton (in 1974, again with Rob Milne).

The spotlight returned to division 1(A) in the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League this week with the leaders Maldon A losing 6-4 to Chelmsford A - their first defeat of the Season. It was a match that 2019 M&G Investments Chelmsford Veterans Singles Champion Wal Bada will remember as he won his three singles downing the challenges of John Poysden (11-9, 11-8, 12-14, 8-11, 11-7), Trevor Lloyd (11-7, 11-7, 8-11, 11-9) and Alex Abbott (6-11, 12-10, 11-9, 9-11, 11-8).

Rawreth’s Liam Squirrel is one of the fastest improving players in Essex. He made his mark at the M&G Investments Chelmsford Championships with a thrilling Mens Doubles victory with Reece Seddon and he was on top form again in division 1(A) of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League.

Chelmsford B’s 6-4 win over Danbury B in division 1(B) of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League looks to be a match which went to the form book. However, this wasn’t the case and it was Danbury B’s Gus Heath who took the top billing. He scored three excellent wins downing the challenges of Robert Shrimpton (7-11, 17-15, 11-8, 11-4), Wudong Liu (12-10, 11-5, 11-8) and Wiktor Delimat (11-4, 11-4, 11-8).

Junior players made their mark this week in no uncertain fashion in the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. Thomas Page (aged 15), 14 year-old Harry Buckle, 15 year old Nyree Marsh and perhaps most notable of all brothers Vineeth Kamma (15) and Sudheep Kamma (11) all played exceptionally well.

Casey Cross has proved to be an excellent acquisition for Chelmsford Table Tennis Club in division 1A of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. He was at his best as second-placed Chelmsford A beat Danbury A 7-3. Cross took the notable scalp of Daniel Young 11-9, 3-11, 11-6, 7-11, 12-10.

The Rosebery/Pope & Smith Award is made annually in recognition of service to Table Tennis in Chelmsford during the current season. Nominations for the award should be submitted in writing before the end of February to the League General Secretary, Dave Moles.

The Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League’s Knock-Out Cups remain very popular and the fact that divisions two, three, four and five have their own Cup events certainly adds to that popularity. OCs C (Gareth Joice, Mick Richardson and David Porter) were shock 5-4 winners over high-flying Danbury D in the first round of the division two Knock Out Cup.

Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League legend - Tony Condon died peacefully on 01 February 2019, aged 87. A seven times Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League Mens Singles Champion (most recently in 1972) he was by all accounts one of the best predominantly defensive players ever to have played in the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League.

19 year old Ugur Saglik, many people’s favourite - is the 2019 M&G Investments Chelmsford Mens Singles Champion and he took the title with five game wins over David Cole in his Semi-Final and against Wale Bada in the Final at the Old Chelmsfordians Club on Monday 11 February 2019 played in front of a sizeable crowd.

Daniel Young and Liam Squirrell - two of the stars of the M&G Investments Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League Championships last weekend met in the division 1A of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League the week before. And it was Daniel Young who came out on top and his hat-trick of wins included a 11-7, 11-6, 11-9 victory over Liam - Liam’s first defeat of the Season.

The preliminary weekend of the M&G Investments Chelmsford & District Table Tennis Championships played at Hylands School produced no shortage of shocks as well as some superb play. With top seed Duncan Taylor having to withdraw from the Mens Singles through injury the top quarter took on a very open look and it was 67 years old Steve Whiteley who took full advantage.

It’s positive news this year as far as the M&G Investments Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League 2019 Championships are concerned. Entries are up for the third year running and this year 125 players are taking part including 42 juniors. The blue riband event as always is the Mens Singles and last year’s winner - ace defender Duncan Taylor is the top seed. The second seed - 19 year old Ugur Saglik will be a new name to a lot of people.

OCs B took a giant step towards winning division two in the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. David Cole and Kevin Worthington were both undefeated as they beat Chelmsford C 8-2 - a result that sees Chelmsford slip back to fourth.

Danbury D made an impressive start to the second half of the Season in division two. Sam Lowman and Cameron Gray both won their three singles as they ran out 8-2 winners against Maldon C.
