Older players will be saddened to hear that Phil Sharp passed away on Thursday 22 August 2024, aged 90. Phil was a long time member of Chelmsford Table Tennis Club and a regular member of their first division teams back in the 1980s and 1990s.

Buttsbury A gained the 9-1 victory needed to snatch the title from long-term leaders Galleywood B. Galleywood had been in pole position since week three but they were unable to keep enough distance between themselves and their closest rivals.

Week 31 saw division 2B’s Hutton Harriers and division 2C’s Chelmsford Panthers take the first two of four junior divisional titles on offer.

The destination of the division two title was finally decided in week 30 as Chelmsford C did enough to get over the winning line having sparred over the top spot with Hatfield Peverel A for much of the season. The division three title goes to the final match of the season as second-placed Buttsbury A host leaders Galleywood B needing a 9-1 victory to snatch the title - this match is scheduled for Monday 22nd April.

Old Chelmsfordians A successfully defended the division 1 league title they won last season while Danbury M improved upon last year's third place finish (as Danbury N) by winning division five - registering just one defeat from their 18 matches. The destination of the division two and division three titles is still undecided with two rounds of matches remaining.

Chelmsford A remain one of just two teams who remain unbeaten through 18 league matches this season (the other being Galleywood C of division four) however with an 18 point gap (and just one game in hand) their hopes of overtaking the league leaders before time runs out look to be slim.

With their sixteenth successive victory of the season, Galleywood C secured the division four title with two matches to spare. Colin Blore (93% win rate), Will Goodchild (85% win rate) and Nathan Blore (65% win rate) have carried the bulk of the load this season but have been well assisted by Gary Copsey, Bryn Thomas, Mark Glenister, Ron Salton and Steve Peacock.

This week saw three teams from Chelmsford table tennis club advance to the handicap cup semi-finals. Youngsters Sami Osman, Amir Chetitah, Alesha Ellis-Austin, Cleon Fernandes and Dion Fernandes all played starring roles for their respective teams.

Martin Archie went unbeaten as Hatfield Peverel A drew 5-5 with leaders Chelmsford C - the destination of the division two title remains undecided with just four points separating the two teams with five matches remaining.

Just four points separate the top two teams in division two as Chelmsford C and Hatfield Peverel A were both held to 5-5 draws in week 21. The two sides meet in week 22 with Chelmsford looking to avenge their 8-2 loss at the hands of Monday’s visitors earlier in the season.

Week twenty of the C&DTTL season saw the divisional leaders parade their dominance over its competition. There were 10-0 wins for OCA A (Div 1) and Galleywood C (Div 4), a 9-1 win for Galleywood B (Div 3) and 8-2 wins for Chelmsford C (Div 2) and Danbury M (Div 5).

The Chelmsford League Committee were saddened to learn of the passing of John Jennings (1938-2024). John who was 85 played in Braintree league and was a qualified umpire and will be best remembered by the Chelmsford League for his many appearances at finals night assisting Arthur Clark with the umpiring. Our condolences to his son Richard who played in the Chelmsford league for many years and the rest of his family.

David Gatheral completed what must be a rare feat on Monday night when playing six individual matches across two different divisions at two different venues. Gatheral was the only Danbury C player to attend the fixture at Chelmsford B and following his three singles matches he dashed to Old Chelmsfordians where he competed in another three singles matches for Danbury D. Six individual matches, four wins - great stuff David!

Evie Knaapen, 13, added the Women’s singles title to the haul of trophies she had already collected at the C&DTTL Annual Championships while Matthew Mulley continued his unbeaten league form to lift both the Men’s singles and Men's doubles trophies.

Impressive performances by a number of Junior players led by Alesha Ellis-Austin (16), Evie Knaapen (13) and Harry Chivers (17) were the talking point of this year’s C&DTTL annual championships. Ellis-Austin and Knaapen won through to the Women’s final to be played on ‘Finals Night’ and also captured the Women’s doubles title, Knaapen was also one half of the Mixed doubles winners while Chivers advanced to the Men’s semi-finals (also to be played on ‘Finals Night’) and won the Hard Bat event.

Martin's funeral will be at St Mary's Church Woodham Ferrers at 2 pm on Wednesday 24th January 2024. Anyone who knew Martin as either a team mate or opponent is welcome to attend. The Chelmsford League Committee were saddened to learn of the passing of Martin Knights between Xmas and New Year. Martin played regularly over the years for Danbury in the Chelmsford League but was more known as a player for Stow Maries in the Burnham League and also as Treasurer to the Burnham League for 25 years.
